This method works best when you have a simple form in which to balance the mould such as a plastic food tub. Also fill the mould with something like dry couscous or wheat grain, then use the foam and place a tub lid or something that you have greased with Vasoline, furniture polish wax, then weight the whole thing on top with a can of beans or some such thing. Leave foam for about 40/50 mins, to go off. When foam over shoots, on table surface etc, leave completely to set solid, then it will come out of hair, simply by pulling. Off solid surfaces using a very shard knife.

I came up with this idea of using spray foam to make a mother mold and did a search to see if anyone else already did it. And, here we are. I figured someone had already done it.
I use a bucket of sand for my "motherless" latex molds, currently.
I plan to make cement statues as normal using the sand. Before removing the cement statue, i plan to use a plastic sheet and tape to make a divider. Will place the mold with statue still in it inside a plastic bag, then place that in a cardboard box. The divider will be taped inside the box. Fill box on both sides of the divider with spray foam. Allow it to harden.
My hope is that I'll have 2 halves of a foam mother mold. Remove statue from mold, clean and prep mold for another pour, put the latex mold back into the foam mother mold in the box, then pour.
Hopefully, I will not have to use the buckets of sand anymore.

Forgot to say, Tubs need to be right way up, spray a little foam in Tubs let it go tacky but not completely set, then sit your original on it and spray approximately 3 inches high foam around in the Tub and then lid as is written in my 1st comment.

I use a skewer, stick the skewer in it, and it releases the air and compresses itself. I learned by trial and error, making fake cupcakes 😂😂 I also put washers or small stones from Dollar Tree on the bottom to weigh them down.
I'm not sure at all what a Mother Mold is, 😂 I was looking for alternatives to spray foam for a more realistic cupcake base.... I'm also 4 yrs late on this, but maybe it'll help someone else

You shouldn't use dish soap, Vaseline, etc. on latex molds. They are petroleum based and will degrade the latex. The best mold release is rubbing alcohol with some castor oil mixed in. Put that in a spray bottle to use. Great video, though. I, too, have been avoiding fiberglass resin. I'm going to give it a try soon though.

Thank you for sharing. How do they hold up over time? Do you mind sharing what latex you prefer?

The optimum way in which to handle this awkward crappy stuff is to go at it without gloves, you really get the feel of it after a few minutes "needing," as you would as if it were dough. And for those with a sweet tooth, yep, you can actually eat this stuff, so if you happen to get a little hungry mid way through sorting this shit out, just pick away at your leisure (remember, this shit expands so take it easy ok), personally I make like an omelette out of the stuff, sprinkled with the usual stuff, tomatoes, cheese, what ever you like really. Good luck and Bon Appetite!

I heard castor oil is the only kind of oil to use on latex rubber...maybe use that instead of Dawn, or what it you use plastic wrap? What happens if you don't compress it....does it not keep the form?

My concern as well. Petroleum is not good for latex. Castor oil is plant based and safe.
