  • In today's episode, I share all about my trip to Iceland in September of 2021. We'll go to some great yarn shops and learn all about Icelandic sheep and wool. I'll show the sweaters I made with the wool I found in Iceland. Of course, there's the beautiful scenery from the Ring Road. And, as always, the show and tell of my various current projects!

      I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! Have a wonderful trip. BTW, in the latest @FruityKnitting podcast, Andrea interviews Majasiska, who goes into great depth about the Thingborg Wool Workshop and mentions the Uppspuni wool mill. If you get to Selfoss, I hope you are able to visit them both.

    Great video! My parents are traveling to Iceland in October and your video gave me a few more places to request yarn from haha I have worked with Icelandic wool for many years and now own Icelandic sheep here in the states. Icelandic is known for being a coarse wool but I will say that thats due to the "tog" (the outer coat) the "thel" (undercoat) is very soft and micron wise can be as fine as merino or shetland (I have Shetlands as well) I have found that separating the tog from the thel and spinning it results in soft close to the skin garments. The best thel harvest usually comes from lamb fleeces.

      So glad you enjoyed the video Cody! Thanks for sharing your experience- I can see how separating out the tog would make the yarn softer . . . I hope your parents enjoy Iceland and bring you back many goodies!!

    What a nice video, with many good tipps and recommendations. I only recently got into knitting and to be able to produce an iceland sweater is like the final goal. I think it's really fascinating how you can find the colours and shapes of the landscape in the patterns of the sweaters.

    I’m knitting with Alafoslopi by Istex. I noticed a bit of a sheepy odour when sniffing my knitting and a distinct barnyard smell on blocking. When dry it’s not noticeable. It’s definitely a little scratchy, but for a winter sweater not an issue because I would wear at least a t-shirt underneath. I absolutely love the fabric knitted up. So beautiful! Thanks for an informative and inspiring podcast. Iceland is definitely on my bucket list now 😅❤

    I knitted the Miles Shirt Jacket with plötulopi held single with a very thin strand of mohair .... everything was fine. No allergic reaction. It was my christmas eve cast on in 2022 ready February 2023 (delayed yarn delivery) Nice to see your Utevist jacket, i made it too. Thank you for sharing!

    Awesome video, Iceland is on my bucket list. I have an Icelandic sweater a friend knitted for me years ago and it’s so scratchy I hardly wear it. Another friend went to Iceland and brought me back a whole bunch of Letlopi wool. I know she meant for me to make a sweater, but I made hats and mittens instead and gave most away as Christmas gifts. I didn’t have any allergic reaction to the wool, but none of it was a natural color. I don’t know if it’s possible for you to soak the wool cakes you have in hot water to clean them? Your cardigan is beautiful. The buttons are perfect. I had to laugh a little when you talked about the sleeves being too long. I had to shorten the sleeves on an aran sweater just a couple months ago. 😄 I sewed it all together, put it on and was like, nope! That won’t do! Thanks again for sharing your wonderful trip to Iceland. I can’t wait to see where you take us next.

      Thank you so much for your kind words, Carin! I think if I put the plates of plotulopi in hot water they might felt . . . But, I found a pattern on ravelry for felted plotulopi mittens, so that might work. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks Icelandic wool is scratchy!

    I have knit with lettlopi, plutolopi and lopi and have not had reactions to it of any kind. Some was Istex brand and some was a kit from Helene Magnusson that I purchased from her when in Reykjavik. Would not wear it against the skin, but then I won’t wear most wool against my skin even if it is soft…I can avoid washing the sweaters too often by wearing a layer under the sweater. Loved your beautiful photos of Iceland!

    The Chiagoo red lace set is great. Get the connectors for the cables. Then you can knit up wide objects. Also interchangeable adaptors are great for connecting the larger size tips on the lace set cables. Not just for knitting socks or sleeves in the round. I found the blue lace set awkward and a bit too short for knitting in the round. Highly recommend the red lace set as you can buy shorter lengths of cables. Also your different coloured skeins from Iceland, can be knitted up for Nordic patterned rows or Alice Starmore patterns using different coloured wool from your stash.

      Thanks Edie! I believe you are right. The red ones only go up to US3 which is way too small for anything above sport weight at best.

    One way to avoid eye reactions might be to wear a pair of clear safety glasses. They are very lightweight. I love using Plotulopi but made my sweater with just one ply and could count the number of breaks on one hand, always due to my not paying attention to yarn plate position. I’m eager to use it again. So glad you popped up in my feed!

    • @YarnJourneys
      @YarnJourneys  Рік тому

      Hi Dora, that’s a good tip! I might try that. I, too, found that the plotulopi did not break all that often. It definitely broke when I sat on the working yarn and tried to pull on it! I’m glad you are enjoying the channel.

    Lately, my eyes have been burning. I did wonder if it was from the rustic wool I was knitting with. I was using Bartlett's yarn, I believe it's from Maine sheep. I don't know. I was just getting over Covid too, so it might have been that.

    • @YarnJourneys
      @YarnJourneys  4 місяці тому

      Hi Jackie. My suspicion is that the problem was not with the ‘rustic-ness’ of the wool itself, but with how it was cleaned and processed. I have NEVER had such “eau de barnyard” with wet blocking as I did with that sweater!! In any case, I hope your eyes have healed and that you are well recovered from Covid!!!

    I am currently knitting Altheda with Plotulopi and I am having the same eye issue. And maybe more severe burning and eye watering than actual eczema of the lids. I am going to try to finish as quickly as possible and will take your tip and if I ever knit with plutolopi again, I will try to source it from a mill that does more processing. I love this video and have now subscribed. Thank you.

      Hi Deborah, I’m so sorry to hear you’re having the same eye issue I did. Hopefully it will go away as soon as you wet block your sweater! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the video.

    This was wonderful. I would love to go to Iceland. The scenery is amazing. I am currently doing The Woolly Thistle's #2022 Sweater KAL right now making the Felix Pullover which I purchased a kit from #TWT and it has #Istex LettLopi yarn in the color Rust- Shade 9427. I have not had any allergic reaction so far but have had to adjust to working with this yarn. Took 3 attempts to get a swatch done as I pulled too tightly and broke the yarn. Even after learning that it still took me 3 cast on attempts having broke the yarn once again of course on the cast on that I did really well and was happy with and was starting the rib pattern. Oh well, its interesting to say the least.

      So glad you enjoyed the video, Patti. My goodness. I didn’t know that lettlopi was fragile too! I was worried the plotulopi breaking during a long tail cast on so I used a large straight needle for the cast on and tried to be super loose. It did break often in the knitting. Particularly if I hadn’t realized I was sitting on the yarn. 🤣 glad it’s not making your eyes itch. Good luck with your Felix sweater!

    Purchased 1 ball Lopi wool in France when visiting from Australia. It was single ply. Pulled apart too easily. Was a coarse wool. My son bought me a pair of gloves when he visited Iceland, and yes a coarse wool. Not good for next to the skin yarn.

      Not in the least. It’s scratchy for sure!
