These are absolutely beautiful.I am amazed at the craftsmanship skills you possess. The spray device that you use(what is the name?).Do you spray the resin on,or brush it on and what type of paint and resin do you use.I would like to paint my lead, saltwater lures.I bought some reflective tape and applied it;though while I was casting and retrieving,it fell off(hehe).I need help from an expert ,such as yourself.,Thank you
The lures are painted with an airbrush, and it is not useable for resin. If you want to have reflective tape on lead lures, I would advise you to use epoxy or UV resin on top. But there is always a chance of chipping if you hit the bottom. Check out some of the videos in the channel. I think they will answer your questions
Hello SplishSplash Excellent video, I enjoy it a lot. Would you let me give you an advice when I am using sticky foil without paper backing??? Here I go, given that the Aluminium foil is sticky by one side. To make easier your handling, you can stick the foil on a piece of wax paper. In this way, the glued side will be more protected from finger print grease. Then, you can cut with the shape of the lure, and then print the scales, etc. etc.
Man You have taught me so much! Thank you. I am going to start making lures! you really motivate and inspire me to do so. Question? is there like a glossy finish to it? it seems like after the actualy color there might be some sorta gloss over it. Thanks!
Luis Quintana You are welcome and thanks for watching. Yes after the painting the lurws get 2 or 3 layers of epoxy to get the mice shine and to protect the lure
Does the spray booth stop the over spray dust spreading around the room? The lures have turned out fantastic, the scale texture has got to be the best that I have seen. Thank you and take care my friend 👍😷👍🏴
The simple booth I have in this video was just to prevent direct spray on other surfaces. You probably want a filter and ventilator attached to remove the spray dust if you paint more than a few lures. Yes I was really satisfied with the outcome of these lures
Working with this particular TESA-brand tape would be a nuisance to me , since it does not have a paper backing . I have purchased similar aluminium tape from the EuroStore , .......it's paper backing makes it a lot easier to cut out to requested shape(one can even fold it double to cut out 2 absolutely equal parts for either side of the lure) , since it does not stick and one would peel off the backing directly prior to applying the foil cut-out onto the lure . Despite the paper backing one could still emboss a pattern , f. e.by rolling a bigger screw or some kind of knurled tool handle across , ..though not quite as deep and prominent compared to your method , I guess . Great trick about the fin glued on underneath the foil and the details made with a pencil , .........and , ....what kind of feltpen are you using to make the specks on the rainbow trout , ...is it and ordinary waterproof one or especially for art work ? Very nice tutorial video , ....thanks a lot for sharing , ....greetings , Dieter
+61diemai Hi Dieter I was looking for tape with paper backing when I vent to buy tape for this project, but they didnt have it. For sure that would make som parts of the project a bit easier. But when you get used to this, it actually isn't that hard to handle. The Pen I'm using is a paint-pen called Posca - www.posca.com/. It works really well with both the airbrush paint, and the epoxy And thanks for the kind words! Gretz Jorgen
+Splish Splash Hi , Jorgen , .......thanks a lot for rapid reply,...I will check that link out to possibly get more info about that feltpen's properties , ....can't remember to have seen this particular brand before . Greetz , Dieter
I have tried a few. The one that works absolutely best for me is Glass Cast 3 from Easy Composites in UK. Before that I used Envirotex Lite, like many others, but I had more bubbles and fisheyes with that one
+keale s I think the are using normal houshold aluminum foil, which is much thinner that this. Working that with your fingers would flatten all the scales. This i much thicker.
Wow very nice, thanks for sharing your tips and know how, so mostly using transparent colors ? And may I ask the "PEARL WHITE" where could I buy that ? Thanks again kind regards and happy lure making :)
Thanks. I use transparent colors for foiled lures - For other lures I just use the opague colors. The pearl white is not transparent, and I use both Wicked and Createx
I only brush my epoxy on. The job of cleaning an airbrush pistol after spraying epoxy is way too big compared to a brush. With my simple jig for drying I can just brush on the layer while its rotating.
great ideas! With all the epoxy and paint over the tape I'm wondering if the effect of the aluminum tape actually is seen when the lures are finished? Have you tried leaving most of the tape unpainted, just adding a few color accents and using the lure that way? Also, how did you seal the edges of the tape? I might have missed that step....
You have to moderate the use of paint to get the shine through, but I think it worked fine on these two lures. The edges and the foil are sealed byt a layer of epoxyor you can do the edges alone with 5 min epoxy
Hi. Your videos are really realy impressive and give me a lot of ideas. Thanks for all you stuff ! Wich type of paint do you use to realise these foiled lures ? Thanks a lot :)
Splish Splash was asking this cause i was asking my self if you were using translucent painting . Ordinary paints dont cover the aluminium shine too much ?? thanks for answers ;)
+antonio999us The back is just a mix of black and white to a dark grey. The pink sides are a fluorescent pink from wicket Colors - Just spray it on very lightly and it will give you a lifelike rainbowtrout side. Good luck with it
hi fisherman, i have a question about the paint, it is acrylic paint or an specific paint for metal paper? cause i'm using acrylic paints and the final result is mate and the aluminum loses brightness
+Andres Moreno Hi Andres. Yes it's acrylic paint, but you have to make sure that it's transparent paint. That will allow you to see the shine of the foil. these colors are sometimes refeered to as "Candy Colors"
If you are using foil without any glue, I would try to shape the foil as much as possible, and then remove it from the lure. Then apply epoxy to the lure, and replace the foil on the lure. With tape I wouldn't add any glue, and just give it epoxy afterwards like in this movie

its came off easily like a tape ( and underneath i was watching that water was inside , it kind of dissolve . but some other places was hard .... maybe i didnt put enough to seal ? :/
I dont have much expeerince with using 5 min epoxy, as I often find it is too fast. But I assume that it should be water proof, so I have no idea on what to say to your problem
Used Envirotex before, but allways had some fisheyes i the first layer, and I had to blow over the biat with a heatgun to pop any small bubbles. With the GlassCast I dont get any fisheyes and don't have to use the heatgun, as there are no small bubbles. The finish in the end is more or less the same - just much easier with the GlassCast

The yellow and green color in this movie is translucent, and yes opague colors wille remove the shine, but can be used very lightly
Splish Splash thx a lot ;) continue your great work you are doing really well ! :)

Very nice!
Awesome thank you
i really enjoy your videos !One question .How does this lure weights?
Tjanks. This lure weighs almost 40 g.
Ok before putting aluminium on it you had putted in specific point a weight in the lure so it will flow on water correctly?
+Niklas without aluminium its around 36 g. I think that with the foil on its slowly sinking. 1 g less weight would probably make it float
Great video! Thank you
