I use a "poor man's bidet." I recycle dish washing liquid bottles for the "bigger" job, and I fill one or two with water and use them to rinse off the affected areas. Sometimes I'll add witch hazel or vinegar if I think about it, but this is totally optional. Then the wipes are actually drying towels, and there is very little mess (if any) that gets on the towels. It has worked well for me for years.
Tika California BEST SOLUTION. The thought of washing CLOTH wipes for #2 grosses me out!😁 That means running an empty machine on rinse cycle with disinfectant just to clean it. The water that's wasted you may as well buy toilet paper...
Amen!!! We are so spoiled in this country. Go ask your 90 year old parents or grandparents what they used and the majority will tell you there was a Sears Roebuck catalog in the outhouse and they’d just rip a page out and wipe away. Most of us who are over 65 and had kids 40 years ago never used disposable diapers because they didn’t exist. Great useful video.
That's like saying we're spoiled because cars were invented. Toilet paper was invented for sanitation so why revert to having to deal with poop? And a 4 oz bottle of Collodial Siler costs almost $30, so it still costs lots of money to revert!
This is so interesting, so educational. I would never have thought of this but I do keep a wash cloth and soap at work in case of an emergency or just to freshen up. I actually have a flannel sheet set that I’m willing to sacrifice if it comes to that. Nobody here but me so it’s nobody’s business.
Here's a hold onto to add just in case. The romans used sticks with sponges.. so next time at the .99 / dollar store pick you up one or two.. aka dish bottle sponge. Hangs well in the shower. Wash rinse...Sanitize. (spray bottle w desired wash ingriedents.. LOLl (like spray and wash..) works well for most anyone that has a surgery of sorts. Spray bottle of your chosing. Works great. Hopefully you don't have teenagers that like to take a roll of TP home in there backpack!!!!!! Roman sticks are a deterrent!!!!!!!!
Heidi, you're a woman after my own heart! Today's society has become SO spoiled and takes everything for granted. I'm so happy you are sharing the simplicity of what life once was, and can still be! People may poke fun at me for putting up all the foods I do, working multiple gardens, hunting, fishing, making health and beauty products, and prepping for emergencies. They're not laughing now. My dad told me over 30 years ago that I was born in the wrong era and every day I grow more fond of living a more simplistic life. Thank you for bringing an awakening to some that simplicity is a good thing. Blessings 💖
I bet if I did a survey, many more people from the south and midwest are using the natural ways, than other states like California.. My roots are in the south, along with my heart, but I live in CA.. :(
I did cloth diapers for my kiddos. Rinsed them out in toilet using rubber gloves, the soiled ones. Soaked in diaper pail, borax/water solution, no odor, zero stains. Washed up beautifully!!
This is right on time 🕺🤸♀️ along with cloth wipes I've been using a picnic ketchup bottle like a handheld bidet for urine and poo. It rinses the urine and poo off completely and I feel fresh and clean. Don't think I'll be going back to toilet paper.
@@donnachavez8230 I went to a salon store and bought a hair dye bottle. It had a longer nozzle..and tilted..I go front to back...while sitting, use cloth to dry.
Just found your video and I totally agree with you. I tried to explain this concept to my other (I live alone) family members and they thought I was crazy. Simple life is a good life. Being able to adapt is essential! Thanks for the video ❣️
Someone may have already suggested this but also buying baby receiving blankets (the flannel kind) at yard sales are great for this too! They are soft and a little thicker so super nice for this purpose!
I was born and raised in Tn. I never saw a roll of toilet paper until I was 15 ,I moved to Ohio. We used an out house with a Sears Roebuck catalogue for wiping.
Early in 2020, I cut up a large old white flannel sheet into rectangles, doubled them up and sewed them on my machine. Then I ordered cloth baby diapers and did the same. In my bathroom cabinet I have a good stock of reusable cloth wipes for emergencies only. I have two large white buckets w/lids, one for after use like a diaper pail, and the other with an attachable toilet seat in case I can't use the regular toilet. Also stored ammonia in the bathroom and buckets of rainwater outside. If I run out of disposable toilet paper, I'll be using cloth ones. Thanks for the useful tips! I believe in being prepared for almost anything.
Right after shooting the above video a year and a half ago, I made the complete change to cloth and have not looked back. I actually have an update video coming out tomorrow :)
As a grandmother I have used half a old towel to use as a nappy in an emergency for the grandbabies. In our day as a young mother , we loved to see all the white nappies lined up in a row on the clothes line. And we always had mainly just one size raglan sleave nighties for babies from birth to12 - 18 months old. So life was so much cheaper to have babies, everything was mainly white for both boys and girls. Home knitted booties we had with soft edging elastic tied in a knot, instead of ribbons for baby booties.
Thanks for this video. As for diapers, Mama had 7 kids and NEVER used a disposable diaper. She'd rinse cloth diapers out in the toilet, soak them in a bleach solution overnight, then toss them into the washing machine. They were always spotless, and we never had diaper rash. People are really, REALLY spoiled in this day and age.
@@lettygsetumbeko2033 l always say, "take away their phones and they cannot survive" everything is on their mobile. If someone pulls a switch and turns them off they have nothing, no money, no food. See who the clever ones are then.
Thank you very much: God bless you for reminding people of how important it is to savor old-fashioned ideas. Does that make sense?? You nailed it for the people. You are really a blessing for the people..I mean it..smiles....
My mother always put the diapers to soak in an ammonia/water solution in a lidded diaper pail. We always rinsed the dirty ones in the toilet before soaking. I think she dumped most of the soak into the toilet before taking the bucket down to the basement laundry area. Then she’d dump the whole bucketful into the washer, rinse and drain and then add in baby and little kid clothes. I don’t recall ever seeing a stained one. I would’ve known because it was my job to fold them! Oldest daughter with three siblings under me. 2nd Mama job there. 😊
After wiping #2 i would first flush then soak the soiled cloth in the clean toilet water to remove feces. Immediately take to sink to use soap to hand wash and sanitize.
When our son was born, in the l99Os, I used cloth diapers w/ plastic outer, undie pants, while we were at home, which was most of the time. (I used disposable for overnight and when going to town, since it was 50 mi away) I did the same thing your mother did with the cloth diapers. I kept a 5 gal bucket of bleach water, w/ a lid, in the bathroom. I would dump the contents of dirty diapers into the toilet, flush that down, then dip the dirtiest part of the diaper into the toilet to rinse it a little before putting it into the bucket. When it was full, I would put the diapers into the washing machine, then dump the bucket waste water outside further out, at the back of our property, or into the toilet. I soaked them in hot bleach water in the washer for at least 30 nins before turning on the washer. Them I hung them out on the line to dry, except during the frigid winters. I had been gifted a Diaper Genie that was kept in the nursery for the disposable diapers. (Those are super-nice!) I kept plastic grocery bags in the diaper bag, for throwing disposable diapers away. (Years later, I was really surprised at the number of young girls who never kept those bags, and just threw away dirty diapers without bagging them first. It's quite an unpleasant surprise to find a very ripe diaper in an obscure trash can, a couple of days later, having not been told it was thrown there, haha, or walking into a public restroom where they've been tossed, unbagged.
Love it. "You're not going to need toilet paper, if you don't have any food". You are definitely a new favorite. To the point, knowledgeable, practical, quality of videos very nice, voice easy for me to hear and understand (have some challenges). Will us my husband well worn flannel shirts to make the wipes, in case water is in short supply. Will use spray bottle to wet the wipes. Normally use bidet that fits under toilet seat. It is the best $35 that I have spent. Will use these flannel wipes to dry after bidet. Have been using wash clothes. Thank you for sharing this information
Thank you so much for this video. At first I thought, "I couldn't do that!" but then you mentioned it is just like the cloth diapers you used on your children and I was sold! I cut up an old flannel queen sheet but there were just too much fraying so did not use them. Hope to get them edged sometime. Another blog suggested using old t-shirts! These work great and I do not need to worry about fraying. We have been using the cloth wipes for about 4 months now and my daughter and I love them. We put them in a small bucket and there is no odor. I dump the bucket into the washer, no pre-wash, longest cycle with hot water, vinegar and extra rinse. I use a spray bottle with silver for cleaning off when needed. I have a rectocele condition and the wipes are perfect for that. Cloth does clean much better than paper.
We just happened to buy and install a bidet on our toilet about a week before things got crazy! I have to tell you guys it is WONDERFUL! For what it is, it was not expensive. Got it on Amazon. We have found, of course, that we don’t need nearly as much tp!!! We found that the two of us used approx. 1 roll of 400 sheets tp in about five days! We’re retired so have been home all of those days! It might be a great option for some of you. It is very easy to install! God Bless you all!
Helpful. I cut the long end of a large cotton sock to diaper my pt & qt jars. No longer have to worry about them touching one another. Great for RV camping as well. After watching your video I now know what to use the other end for. Nice soft glove to use after the bidet. Added these to the wash cloth pile you spoke about. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas you put out there!
I listened to this a couple of months ago. Then went to Walmart and bought some cloth, cut it up, washed it and I've been using it every since. It has really cut down on the use of toilet paper and saved a lot of money. Thanks for the great idea. I also bought a couple of packages of paperless towels. They are soft, about the size of a washcloth, relatively cheap and perfect for my hubby to blow his nose. We are also using cloth napkins and kitchen towels. I work 45 to 50 hrs outside the home, and I've had no problem keeping them washed up. It is just the 2 of us with our kids all gone and my husband is waiting for neck and back surgery and his help is limited. I'm glad I did it. Again, thanks!
I've invested in three bidets, one for each toilet. They come in different brands and prices and different budgets. It should be a very good idea if every household will invest in one of these babies
Mullein is also perfect, and it has great properties. Menthol. Cowboys lined their underside to prevent chapping. Back in the day, I lined my baby Dippers due to rash. In one day fixed. Us old timers Know a thing or two also. Found your channel, loving a young lady who is using old methods to get by. Your a peach! 💞
When TP became an issue in our city, I mentioned to my hubby that we have PLENTY of old towels. If we run out of TP I would cut up several of these towels and we would use it for TP. Everyone in my house is onboard. I also mentioned it while out shopping for groceries - it was amazing how many people within earshot went, oh, yeah. Sometimes you just need to think differently.
We said the same thing. My family grew up poor. If we didn't have tp, we used towels or clothes. We knew people who even used newspaper. Seems like many people today have lost the ability to be self reliant.
~~~ Mrs. Heidi may I say in a nice way ,,, you are the best my friend....I used to teach homeschoolers about 45 homesteaders and i would of asked you if we could use your videos . The children would not only learned but loved you and Patrick. ...I also liked your ideas in this video. Please know I pray for you and your loved on every day...GOD'S JOY.
My 39 yet old son, said, "use a bidet." How about a spray bottle? After birth of one of my babies, the hospital gave me a squeeze/squirt bottle for taking care of the area. It would work for this. Some kind of oil for the skin also makes clean up much easier. IF there is a proper amount of fiber in the diet, clean up is much less "messy". Less paper is so much easier on a septic system. I have been thinking of the pioneers who were traveling in wagons & ones who had no corner grocery or supermarket. :) My grandmother told me Mullen was called "cowboy toilet paper" & was Indian tobacco.
Please send Him this way. I am tricked and feel sick and lost everything. Used to have abundance but was not rich towards Him. No children or husband. I feel cut and cursed. Sad. I am PK AND REGRET THIS WHOLE THING
We made our own personal bidets out of brand new, 1 gallon garden sprayers. Just fill with warm water, pump to pressurize and wash away. The longer wand is very useful and this can be used where no running water is available, such as an outhouse or your favorite bush.
My daughter and I already cut fabric and we're going to do this route. I have another friend that's on UA-cam and her and her daughter are going to do this as well. On now another Channel message for daughter and said she's going to as well so I think people are giving it a try. We appreciate the added wisdom you always give Heidi
My son only ever had cloth diapers and never a diaper rash, seven years later my daughter started with cloth then I moved to America and found disposable diapers, she had a diaper rash within a week so went back to cloth and no more rashes. No baby wipes just warm water and cotton wool to clean the mess off.
You are doing an awesome job on your channel thank you so much for everything that you are accomplishing. @Snarky Patrol Thanks but not interested in a bidet, I have gone cloth all the way and am very happy with it. No need for toilet paper or any other disposable product. They wash up easy and are much easier to deal with than the cloth diapers I did with my kids
@@ge0ld0re I know amazon sells them but I just use a plastic water bottle and warm water. I am from Europe and it is very common to have a bidet in your bathroom, I am missing it here in the US. I was watching a TV documentary from some place in Asia, it may have been south Korea, and they had a hand held bidet shower by the toilet and used it every time they used the toilet, the young man said: you are always clean! They prefer it that way.
@@evelina.amazonAtGmail Finland has hand held spayers.I was weirded out by that as I don't want to touch anything that someone else handled....I'm thinking splash back. On that note....I got married at 15y. Had a babyjust atfer 16th birthday and part of the post-partum care was peri care. Every new mom got a peri bottle to aid in personal hygiene. The flannel is a great idea. I remember swishing diapers in the toilet and throwing them in the diaper pail which had water and dreft detergent. Gosh, I don't feel old at all😏
We were blessed in our tiny town,that last round, we have store called needful things, they get truckloads of toilet paper.. but I'm up for the cloth wipes..the store takes good care of our needs here which is wonderful .
I good way to eliminate the mess for the number two process would be to keep a squirt bottle of water to rinse parts before wiping. Then the wipes don't end up as messy. When all this crazy came out, I didn't panic at all. I am a natural for roughing it. So I instantly started thinking about what sheets/material I could tear for tp. We have 7 left in the house and five of us are females. You can imagine how much tp can be used. Another step we made was to buy condiment bottles for a water wash. I love the idea of using herbs. Awesome idea.
I'm somewhat new to your channel and I found this video very helpful and some of the comments very helpful. Thank you for your videos, the time and effort you put into them. The sharing of your knowledge. Is much appreciated. Even a video 2 yrs old. 🙂 I pray God blesses you for what you are doing with your gifts. 🎈🦋
I love that you shared this. I use reusable bamboo facial wipes instead of TP. They are about 3" diameter and definitely big enough and absorbent for a quick wipe. A portable camper's bidet works great for a pre-rinse before wiping a messy job. So happy to see others finding ways to make less waste in the world overall. No worries here if everyone else buys all the TP. ;)
I am retired now, but I used to keep baby wipes in my purse to freshen up under my arms and also the other areas. I still keep baby wipes in my purse, and I keep them in the bathroom. I only recently began to remember my mom and Grandmother having "rag bags", so now, when I have a t-shirt or a towel that has worn out, I cut it up into squares and put it in my "rag bag". This is a great video, and I am happy to see so many people who are willing to adhere to it. I have been using old towels to clean up spills in the kitchen for years. Thank you!
Homemade bidet. You can use one of those pump garden sprayers next to the toilet and spray away the "cling ons" before using the cloth. The long spray nozzle can be angled for more ease of use. Or even using a plastic squeeze ketchup/mustard container. I even believe you can order something of the sort online, specifically for that purpose, possibly from an outdoor or camping site. That makes the cloth squares more for simply drying off.
Yvonne VanSickle I love the idea of using a pump garden sprayer! Any squeeze bottle could be used as a “peri bottle” like the ones women use after childbirth.
Im Muslim we are commanded after using the restroom to have to rinse ourselves with running water before wiping and redoing our abalution. I always have a water bottle with me for such an issue and trust me you feel way cleaner than wiping with just paper. Welcome to my constant butt washing world. Lol Stay strong brothers and sisters and good luck with prepping. May we all be protected from harm and calamity. Ameen
Thank God for Jesus Christ . He is truly The light of the world, the living water, the good shepherd, the prince of peace. The only way, the only truth, the only life. John 14:6
We should use both. But the main thing is that you become born again before the rapture: thank JESUS CHRIST for paying for your sins on the cross and HIS resurrection on the 3rd day!!! It must come form the bottom of your heart and don't forget: JESUS is GOD, see John 1!
What is wrong with you people? This is a talk about butt wiping. Please don’t bring religion into it. I feel embarrassed by your bible thumping reaction. They were sharing a cultural custom, not preaching.
Hi Heidi, I have been using cloth wipes since 2011. We went through a really rough time and had to cut out everything that wasn't absolutely necessary. When things got better, no one wanted to go back to toilet paper! I do soak mine in water between washings... that was recommended when I started many years ago. I just dump them in the wash once a week, spin them out and then wash. However, I think I might try the no water method that you suggest since I have to carry the buckets up and down two flights of stairs. Oh and when I use them for the "bigger job" I always wet them, they clean so much better that way! Thanks for the video! BTW, I just went to etsy and purchased some wooly lamb's ear seed from you. I can't wait to grow it in my garden!
@@nicolettedean4331 Nope, Have been introduced to the BIDET in Europe back in the 1990s. Was able to find an affordable BIDET on eBay a few years ago and have not bought TP in years!!! A BIDET is so much more hygienic and earth-friendly!!!
This is a good idea and I actually thought to do this when the toilet paper buying panic started. I bought toilet paper, and as a backup when that was gone, I bought paper towels and when that is gone, I have wash cloths. Another thing I stocked up on that the cashiers were saying NOBODY was buying, was soap. Also a tip for bringing a fever down, if you get it is take a bath or sponge bath (with a wash cloth) with warm water and baking soda. It pulls the fever right out.
I've been following the channel of Dr. John Campbell. He's an a U.K. doctor that puts out videos everyday about Covid 19. He said that a fever is the body's way of fighting the virus. Viruses don't like heat, and it's the body's way of trying to destroy the virus. He said that we shouldn't be so quick to lower a temperature, unless it gets too high, especially in children. The virus can't multiple as quick when our body temperature is up. So when you lower your body's temperature, the virus starts to multiply more rapidly again. He said that it's best to tough it out, even though you will feel terrible. Lowering your temperature actually prolongs the illness. I would suggest of course that you speak with your own healthcare provider.
Spin mop bucket works great for pre clean on dirty cloth diapers! Would work just the same for adult wipes! Then just empty water from bucket down the toilet.
I gave up trying to find toilet paper and headed over to the baby aisle and bought baby wipes, from there I ran over to the fabric aisle and bought flannel. Homemade bidet works great!
No to in my town but oddley plenty of paper table napkins an I got several pks,no one seemed to think of that.just trash them in plastic bag.would STOP UP toilet I think??!!
Why don't you just go over to Home Depot and buy the nozzle they sell for this use? Works great. No gross disgusting pile of s**ty flannel sitting in your house. Not rocket science people.
@@1994abbygirl Yes, of course. It looks very much like the long spray nozzle at your kitchen sink. It works so perfectly I can't imagine someone coming up with a better idea. It is designed and sold for this exact purpose. Bath section at Home Depot. Hooks up to the toilet fill tank shut off valve in less than 5 minutes. There are millions upon millions of people all over the world that use this method. It's so easy and clean and sanitary you'll be embarrassed to admit that you ever used a caveman method such as toilet paper. I guarentee to you that people around the world stand with their mouth agape shaking their head trying to visualize how you wipe feces around on your backside. Visualize taking a shower after every toilet session while seated and actually walking away clean. Trust me on this, it's the sophisticated way to go. Just need a small towel to pat dry. Toilet paper? Really?
In the 70's Johnny Carson made a joke about there not being toilet paper in the stores and everyone went out and bought it and then the store shelves were empty. I never forgot that and realize lots of things can deplete the stocks of anything in the stores. We arr always very prepared. I also have lots of old sheets and towels which can be used for so many things.
Yes. We happened to put on a bidet before things got nuts! We only use about 1 roll (400 sheets) in 5 days for two of us. But this idea of using the fabric wipes to dry off makes great sense too!
Glad we have a paper mill nearby! You can even make your own TP with paper, wood shavings or sawdust. Soak in water, blend into a pulp and pour onto a flat screen, air dry. I’m sure there are videos showing how. Outhouses use to use old Sears catalog pages. My son works in a warehouse and has been working lots of overtime sending out shipments to stores for restocking.
Thanks. I've now added flannel to my shopping list. I live alone and don't have a washing machine or a dryer. I do however have buckets and a cheap drying rack, as well as soap and bleach, and I'm going to invest in a clean plunger and a mop bucket with a wringer.
I love this! I make my own and I embroider the edges which I love doing in the winter when I can't be outside in the garden. I call them "tush napkins" and I love them. They are nice to look at. I use flannelette yes, because they are luxurious. I always enjoy using them. I only use them for Numero Uno but I want to use them for #2 as well now after watching this. For #2 I use leaves from the garden in the summer, stash them in a pail then and bury them when I have time.
Yes I have been using my 40- 4x4" double thickness flannel squares for about 10 years now. They are the perfect size and they just don't wear out I did surge the ends together to keep them neat and together. I too only use them for the light jobs and I use the TP for the bigger jobs. But there is no reason not to do this. It makes you feel so good about yourself. I also use the bathroom a lot through the night so to lasts me through whole week I would double this amount to 80. I believe I started out with 50 and then a few times forgot and flushed a few down. Anyway, I use a small shiny metal trash can from Walmart that has a foot peddle to open it with. I line it with a mesh zippered bag so all I have to do is take it out, zip it up and throw it in the Sunday wash with the laundry.
Thanks for making this video. More ppl need to see it! I told my family to think back to the old days when babies were in cloth diapers, and butt wipes hadn't been invented yet. My mom used warm wet washcloths to clean us up. Rinse in toilet, throw in wash. Younger people today cringe when I tell them that.
I forgot to mention that I've been using pee cloths for a few months, since right before the virus hit (coincidentally, I just happened to be at that stage in practicing using my preps) and I found that a great fabric for pee cloths are those microfiber cleaning rags. They are so soft and absorbent! I picked up a package of bright yellow ones at Home Depot in the cleaning section. They come in a package of about 18 or 20 cloths. Each cloth is about 12" square and it's the PERFECT size for doing bird baths. I use the blue ones for doing bird baths (bathing with just hot water and a cloth instead of getting in the tub/shower). But the yellow ones are perfect as pee cloths when cut in half. So you just need blue 12" squares (folded into quarters and refolded for washing your privates) for bathing and the yellow (6" x 12" folded in half) for pee wipes. :-)
I got what you are saying and as sometimes when I ran out of toilet paper I do use those old cloth but it goes into the trash but like you say somthing is coming for us and and we will need those suggesting things
We used to just rinse out the cloth diapers in the toilet until all the solids were gone. Then we soaked in a diaper pail. Then we dumped the soak in the tub and rinsed well - diapers still in the diaper pail. Then it went into the washer and was washed. Then it went through a rinse cycle to make sure all the soap was rinsed out - so baby's delicate skin didn't get a rash. Somewhere in all that is a way to take care of seriously soiled flannel in the absence of toilet paper. I hope I don't have to resort to this, but I'll be able to if needed. I'm going to make some cloth wipes to use for number one. (and plant some wooly lambs ear). Great video. Love to you.
Love ya Heidi! I thought the same thing about the buying toilet paper instead of food. We have recycled old clothing...outgrown baby clothing, old sheets etc, for Reusable baby wipes (our son had highly sensitive skin) and we still use them today. I have many many gallon size ziplock bags full of cut up clothing for emergencies etc. toilet paper on hand.
First time visiting your channel. Looking for alternative to TP. Thank you for showing this. I love this idea. My grandparents also used cloth. I will be looking for flannel fabric. Thanks again!
I feel the same as you...rather get food items than toilet paper. I'be been doing the same as you before all this hit (mainly for the weeks money is tight because of emergency expense like car repair until my next check). During these crazy times I'm grateful I listened to how my grandfather told me how he grew up and what they did during the depression... I'm using everything I learned.😁
After shooting this video in early 2020, I switched to all cloth and have not looked back, Not just for emergencies but for all the time. So much better than toilet paper and I feel rather spoiled using flannel over rough paper. Here is the most recent update I did: ua-cam.com/video/1XljChGp16w/v-deo.html
THANK you Heidi for another great & necessary topic! FUN FACT: My Grandmother died at 101 yrs of age. I remember her saying that she remembered when they didn't have toilet paper (before it was invented). They had an outhouse & they used NEWSPAPER to wipe!! Apparently, the newspaper was printed on paper that was more like linen cloth. Their dad would read the morning paper & take it in with him after... That is probably better than having to hand WASH those rags. Very few people get a daily paper anymore, & they're so full of chemicals. I can't imagine, I could wash diapers by hand if needed - babies are totally different than adults. I think I would pray that a bidet was still available & have my husband put one in. I may just do that as insurance LOL I love the idea of tinkle towels for sure. That alone would cut tp use drastically, I am well hydrated so I go often=) I am conscientious about using as little paper as needed to do the job.
Love this! 100s of yrs I know right! Thank you so much for keeping it real! I always loved the soft feel of Lambs ear, but I never knew it was so versatile or knew about its anti-microbial properties till your video...thank you for the great info and tips! God bless my sister in Christ!!! Keep rockin it!
We have stocked up, on most items, but within reason, and over a period of time....no panic here. But, it's crazy that people panic with toilet paper and bottled water, when there is plenty, if they stop panicking! I am an herbalist, forager, hunter, fisherman, trapper, and a great shot, and have a 26 acre pond, and I make herbal medicines...so we are fine, but, I hope the lesson learned in all of this, is exactly what you teach....learn how to be self sufficient, and learn not to depend on stores, and the medical industry, that may or may not be available in a crisis.....thank you for all you do! And most of all everyone.....get close to God, and trust in him, not man, who will almost always fail you....Our Father never does! Trust!
We live just north of Detroit in a little town called Marysville. And it was just crazy watching the people buy the toilet paper here. But yesterday the store was already restocking. And there was a limit put on how many you could buy. Along with the eggs and other important groceries. It’s just pure madness. I enjoyed your video on using cloth for our uses in the bathroom. I was just going to plan on using washcloths if I ran out of toilet paper. But that would’ve taken about a month and a half. Because it’s just my husband and me. And we only buy four rolls at a time. 😉 also A suggestion for the city folks. They can get bidet.
Yep. I just bought food. I have 3 rolls of toilet paper but I use cloth for #1 and save the paper for the other for now. Not worried about this minor category lol
Great video I also remember cloth diapers I'm a cloth diaper baby LOL I'm only 55 didn't know about the plants that you could use glad I watched her video I'm going to have to get me some seeds
Thanks Heidi, Those of us that did use cloth diapers can understand this concept. I do think I will use this method for urinating it will save on the use of the toilet paper we do have. I have not been able to find any anywhere. So this will help conserve. You do bring out and share great information.
I use a peri bottle before the wipe. I like the idea of adding baking soda to the bucket and I'm going to start that. For cleaning I soak the cloths in bleach water. Then do a rinse. Then put in the washing machine. If I'm ever without electricity I have a wash board and bar soap that I occasionally use.
Havent done this for years but when my youngest was a baby she was allergic to all commercial wipes and diapers. I made flannel wipes and used cloth diapers for her. I also used cloth pads for years cause the store ones bothered me. I kept a 5 gallon bucket with vinegar in the bathroom with a lid. My husband put a few holes in the lid cause I thought I should. At the end of each day I pour it all into the washer with my homemade laundry detergent. My cloth reusable dry sheets I had essential oil of lemon on. They came out nice and clean every time. Also the soaking water I used was very hot at the beginning of each day, I didnt keep anything in there all night. I think these wipes system could work well for cloth TP if needed.
I totally agree! I also used the power of the sun to bleach the diapers. Then I was told to let the diapers freeze on the line. Worked! I had to quit soaking them in clorine bleach. Then we started using Amway, so I soaked them in all-fabric bleach. No more holes in the diapers! At the time I didn't know about using vinegar. (After I was done with the diapers my husband and father-in-law used them for various jobs they had. Great on windshields)
Hello, I just wanted to interject as I'm understanding that you're talking about using the wipes directly on your bottom as you would TP. What I've been doing is I have two bottles in my bathroom. One has a mix I make for myself but anyone could just put some water, a drop of white vinegar and a drop of teatree oil. This I spray on myself after I pee and then I wipe with a cloth. For #2, I have a bottle that I fill with warm water and I spray myself after doing my business and then I use some liquid soap and spray again to rinse...THEN I wipe to dry. That way is the cleanest possible method and there is very little dirt or bacteria on the wipes. Obviously, this only works as long as you have access to water and I can only use it at home. But it keeps me super clean and has saved me tons of money and of course is better for the environment. :) Hope this helps. ps: love watching your channel
Monique Champagne I have done something similar with a small plastic bottle, like an old liquid dish soap bottle. Works great and no plumbing a bidet. Now I just perch on the edge of my tub and use soap and the handheld spray ( after using TP). Very refreshing!
In the UK , babies' nappies were terry towelling and boiled in a bucket or in a gas or electric boiler, rinsed by hand and dried on the clothes line. Automatic washing machines and disposable nappies weren't usual for working class folk until the mid 70s onward.
Thanks Heidi.. I have done this for some time.. and it is a real money saver. AND... I feel like I am slumming it when I have had to use paper. What is wrong with us as a society.. That is is the first need everyone thinks of.. Even my grand daughter said.. You can use an old sock top.. there ya go.. :) I too use the cloth for #1 but would not be opposed to cloth for #2. thanks for presenting options.. Great Video..
I'm 69 and Irish. Back when I was growing up, our toilet was outside the house. I would be terrified to go out in the dark. We used newspaper scrunched up and later really hard toilet rolls. I had 5 children and used to wash nappies. I hated the procedure and my stomach would heave. Looks like we're going back. We've all got very soft. Greetings from Ireland
I have not run out of toilet paper, but the first thing I did was go buy some cheap rags (21 for 5 dollars) and a bucket for $5. The only thing that would probably be a problem is after wiping, a person might forget and let it drop in the toilet and it would have to be pulled out before flushing. It is amazing that people do not know how to handle this with no toilet paper and cooking from scratch and freezing food. Thank God I had a mom who taught me.
After watching your video have started using cloth for #1. Have a small trash can with foot pedal lined with a mesh zipper bag (for delicates) that I put cloths in. So easy to just zip up & throw in washer :-) So thankful to have found your channel & learning from you. I also used cloth diapers for my 3 children. Too bad disposables are so common now & filling up the landfills. Young generation is so spoiled & wastful. Thank you Heidi :-)
In Iran there wasn’t toilet paper. The toilets were a hole in the bathroom floor. We would squat and use a watering can and our right hand to wipe our body area clean. The hand was washed afterwards. It took a bit of getting used to but after awhile it seemed normal.
Right, I did mention this in my more recent video and update on this that just posted today: ua-cam.com/video/1XljChGp16w/v-deo.html Americans and other such countries have been spoiled for too long with throw away paper. I am so glad that after shooting the video you commented on here a year and a half ago that I made the full change to cloth and wish I would have done it sooner. Like many stated, you should wash your hands when you are done anyway and we wash up in the shower as well, so why should it be so difficult?
I use a "poor man's bidet." I recycle dish washing liquid bottles for the "bigger" job, and I fill one or two with water and use them to rinse off the affected areas. Sometimes I'll add witch hazel or vinegar if I think about it, but this is totally optional. Then the wipes are actually drying towels, and there is very little mess (if any) that gets on the towels. It has worked well for me for years.
Tika California BEST SOLUTION. The thought of washing CLOTH wipes for #2 grosses me out!😁 That means running an empty machine on rinse cycle with disinfectant just to clean it. The water that's wasted you may as well buy toilet paper...
❤❤❤❤❤
What a great idea!!!
Witch hazel is excellent
Thanks great idea
Amen!!! We are so spoiled in this country. Go ask your 90 year old parents or grandparents what they used and the majority will tell you there was a Sears Roebuck catalog in the outhouse and they’d just rip a page out and wipe away. Most of us who are over 65 and had kids 40 years ago never used disposable diapers because they didn’t exist. Great useful video.
True!! Heart smiling - i remember grandfather's thunderbox. Thanks for the memories Lol, many Blessings 🕊️
I'm 65 and have a 41 yr old daughter. I used cloth diapers on her at home to save money. Then when we went out somewhere I used disposable diapers.
@@sharoncrawford7192 Yep. Me, too.
@@sharoncrawford7192 and you washed them in ammonia period or that's what my mother did and her mother.
That's like saying we're spoiled because cars were invented. Toilet paper was invented for sanitation so why revert to having to deal with poop? And a 4 oz bottle of Collodial Siler costs almost $30, so it still costs lots of money to revert!
This is so interesting, so educational. I would never have thought of this but I do keep a wash cloth and soap at work in case of an emergency or just to freshen up. I actually have a flannel sheet set that I’m willing to sacrifice if it comes to that. Nobody here but me so it’s nobody’s business.
I buy unscented baby wipes. Now I will use the empty soap bottle. Best idea.
Here's a hold onto to add just in case. The romans used sticks with sponges.. so next time at the .99 / dollar store pick you up one or two.. aka dish bottle sponge. Hangs well in the shower. Wash rinse...Sanitize. (spray bottle w desired wash ingriedents.. LOLl (like spray and wash..) works well for most anyone that has a surgery of sorts. Spray bottle of your chosing. Works great. Hopefully you don't have teenagers that like to take a roll of TP home in there backpack!!!!!! Roman sticks are a deterrent!!!!!!!!
Our business now, Sis! Appreciate. PTL!!!
Heidi, you're a woman after my own heart! Today's society has become SO spoiled and takes everything for granted. I'm so happy you are sharing the simplicity of what life once was, and can still be!
People may poke fun at me for putting up all the foods I do, working multiple gardens, hunting, fishing, making health and beauty products, and prepping for emergencies. They're not laughing now. My dad told me over 30 years ago that I was born in the wrong era and every day I grow more fond of living a more simplistic life.
Thank you for bringing an awakening to some that simplicity is a good thing. Blessings 💖
Thank you for this!
Yes I am born in the wrong century also😂 I'm loving the old ways! I'm not bothered by all who think I'm nuts. It's nice here. 😀
Love your show! Today's people lack these traditional trainings and depending on stores to solve their problems.
I bet if I did a survey, many more people from the south and midwest are using the natural ways, than other states like California.. My roots are in the south, along with my heart, but I live in CA.. :(
Mickey ..hey, nothing wrong with being creative! It’s great fun and drives away depression. 😊👍
I did cloth diapers for my kiddos. Rinsed them out in toilet using rubber gloves, the soiled ones. Soaked in diaper pail, borax/water solution, no odor, zero stains. Washed up beautifully!!
How do you make the borax solution. What's the measurements
Me too
So did I.. cloth diapers or so much better than the disposable ones my kids didn't have any problem with him because I was always changing them
Hanging them outside helped the bleaching process.
Now if we can only teach our young moms to not want instant gratification when it comes to raising babies cheaply but clean & healthy!
This is right on time 🕺🤸♀️ along with cloth wipes I've been using a picnic ketchup bottle like a handheld bidet for urine and poo. It rinses the urine and poo off completely and I feel fresh and clean. Don't think I'll be going back to toilet paper.
May be a silly question, but how do you do the poor man’s bidet without it spraying all over the seat? To go from the front or the back?
@@donnachavez8230 I went to a salon store and bought a hair dye bottle. It had a longer nozzle..and tilted..I go front to back...while sitting, use cloth to dry.
I already been using a portable 2 piece hygeine bidet. Or use the dish soap bottle, whatever size bottle you want. Used washed cloths to dab dry.yea.
Just found your video and I totally agree with you. I tried to explain this concept to my other (I live alone) family members and they thought I was crazy. Simple life is a good life. Being able to adapt is essential! Thanks for the video ❣️
Odd how family members are the most resistant to our great ideas. sigh.
Someone may have already suggested this but also buying baby receiving blankets (the flannel kind) at yard sales are great for this too! They are soft and a little thicker so super nice for this purpose!
This has to be the best comment I read all day.
Early in 2020, I cut up a large old white flannel sheet into rectangles, doubled them up and sewed them on my machine. Then I ordered cloth baby diapers and did the same. In my bathroom cabinet I have a good stock of reusable cloth wipes for emergencies only. I have two large white buckets w/lids, one for after use like a diaper pail, and the other with an attachable toilet seat in case I can't use the regular toilet. Also stored ammonia in the bathroom and buckets of rainwater outside. If I run out of disposable toilet paper, I'll be using cloth ones. Thanks for the useful tips! I believe in being prepared for almost anything.
Right after shooting the above video a year and a half ago, I made the complete change to cloth and have not looked back. I actually have an update video coming out tomorrow :)
As a grandmother I have used half a old towel to use as a nappy in an emergency for the grandbabies.
In our day as a young mother , we loved to see all the white nappies lined up in a row on the clothes line.
And we always had mainly just one size raglan sleave nighties for babies from birth to12 - 18 months old.
So life was so much cheaper to have babies, everything was mainly white for both boys and girls.
Home knitted booties we had with soft edging elastic tied in a knot, instead of ribbons for baby booties.
An emergency commode - great prep! PTL!!!
Thanks for this video. As for diapers, Mama had 7 kids and NEVER used a disposable diaper. She'd rinse cloth diapers out in the toilet, soak them in a bleach solution overnight, then toss them into the washing machine. They were always spotless, and we never had diaper rash. People are really, REALLY spoiled in this day and age.
Yes, i did the same for my daughter 30 years ago. I loved the smell of fresh breeze dried diapers. Blessings 🕊️
How right you are.
Thank you Judith!
My mother always put the diapers to soak in an ammonia/water solution in a lidded diaper pail. We always rinsed the dirty ones in the toilet before soaking. I think she dumped most of the soak into the toilet before taking the bucket down to the basement laundry area. Then she’d dump the whole bucketful into the washer, rinse and drain and then add in baby and little kid clothes. I don’t recall ever seeing a stained one. I would’ve known because it was my job to fold them!
Oldest daughter with three siblings under me. 2nd Mama job there. 😊
As a child, I remember seeing that done in different homes. Memories!
After wiping #2 i would first flush then soak the soiled cloth in the clean toilet water to remove feces. Immediately take to sink to use soap to hand wash and sanitize.
Very cool🙌🙏
Wow I actually remember that.
When our son was born, in the l99Os, I used cloth diapers w/ plastic outer, undie pants, while we were at home, which was most of the time. (I used disposable for overnight and when going to town, since it was 50 mi away)
I did the same thing your mother did with the cloth diapers. I kept a 5 gal bucket of bleach water, w/ a lid, in the bathroom. I would dump the contents of dirty diapers into the toilet, flush that down, then dip the dirtiest part of the diaper into the toilet to rinse it a little before putting it into the bucket. When it was full, I would put the diapers into the washing machine, then dump the bucket waste water outside further out, at the back of our property, or into the toilet.
I soaked them in hot bleach water in the washer for at least 30 nins before turning on the washer. Them I hung them out on the line to dry, except during the frigid winters.
I had been gifted a Diaper Genie that was kept in the nursery for the disposable diapers. (Those are super-nice!)
I kept plastic grocery bags in the diaper bag, for throwing disposable diapers away. (Years later, I was really surprised at the number of young girls who never kept those bags, and just threw away dirty diapers without bagging them first. It's quite an unpleasant surprise to find a very ripe diaper in an obscure trash can, a couple of days later, having not been told it was thrown there, haha, or walking into a public restroom where they've been tossed, unbagged.
Love it. "You're not going to need toilet paper, if you don't have any food".
You are definitely a new favorite.
To the point, knowledgeable, practical, quality of videos very nice, voice easy for me to hear and understand (have some challenges).
Will us my husband well worn flannel shirts to make the wipes, in case water is in short supply. Will use spray bottle to wet the wipes. Normally use bidet that fits under toilet seat. It is the best $35 that I have spent. Will use these flannel wipes to dry after bidet. Have been using wash clothes.
Thank you for sharing this information
Nothing like going back to basics. All natural like your baskets! Thank You.
Thank you so much for this video. At first I thought, "I couldn't do that!" but then you mentioned it is just like the cloth diapers you used on your children and I was sold! I cut up an old flannel queen sheet but there were just too much fraying so did not use them. Hope to get
them edged sometime. Another blog suggested using old t-shirts! These work great and I do not need to worry about fraying. We have been using the cloth wipes for about 4 months now and my daughter and I love them. We put them in a small bucket and there is no odor. I dump the bucket into the washer, no pre-wash, longest cycle with hot water, vinegar and extra rinse. I use a spray bottle with silver for cleaning off when needed. I have a rectocele condition and the wipes are perfect for that. Cloth does clean much better than paper.
We just happened to buy and install a bidet on our toilet about a week before things got crazy! I have to tell you guys it is WONDERFUL! For what it is, it was not expensive. Got it on Amazon. We have found, of course, that we don’t need nearly as much tp!!! We found that the two of us used approx. 1 roll of 400 sheets tp in about five days! We’re retired so have been home all of those days! It might be a great option for some of you. It is very easy to install! God Bless you all!
Good for you folks!!! eBay has BIDETs for about $20.00...
This might sound dumb, but I've never even seen a bidet, how, exactly do you use it? Just spray water or use a cloth, what?
Helpful. I cut the long end of a large cotton sock to diaper my pt & qt jars. No longer have to worry about them touching one another. Great for RV camping as well. After watching your video I now know what to use the other end for. Nice soft glove to use after the bidet. Added these to the wash cloth pile you spoke about. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas you put out there!
I listened to this a couple of months ago. Then went to Walmart and bought some cloth, cut it up, washed it and I've been using it every since. It has really cut down on the use of toilet paper and saved a lot of money. Thanks for the great idea. I also bought a couple of packages of paperless towels. They are soft, about the size of a washcloth, relatively cheap and perfect for my hubby to blow his nose. We are also using cloth napkins and kitchen towels. I work 45 to 50 hrs outside the home, and I've had no problem keeping them washed up. It is just the 2 of us with our kids all gone and my husband is waiting for neck and back surgery and his help is limited. I'm glad I did it. Again, thanks!
I've invested in three bidets, one for each toilet. They come in different brands and prices and different budgets. It should be a very good idea if every household will invest in one of these babies
So, what's the cheapest that does the job?
Do they require electricity?
When TP became an issue in our city, I mentioned to my hubby that we have PLENTY of old towels. If we run out of TP I would cut up several of these towels and we would use it for TP. Everyone in my house is onboard. I also mentioned it while out shopping for groceries - it was amazing how many people within earshot went, oh, yeah. Sometimes you just need to think differently.
We said the same thing. My family grew up poor. If we didn't have tp, we used towels or clothes. We knew people who even used newspaper. Seems like many people today have lost the ability to be self reliant.
Use a peri bottle to wash the area first to cut down on the waste that needs to be washed from the wipes
My 39 yet old son, said, "use a bidet." How about a spray bottle? After birth of one of my babies, the hospital gave me a squeeze/squirt bottle for taking care of the area. It would work for this. Some kind of oil for the skin also makes clean up much easier. IF there is a proper amount of fiber in the diet, clean up is much less "messy". Less paper is so much easier on a septic system. I have been thinking of the pioneers who were traveling in wagons & ones who had no corner grocery or supermarket. :) My grandmother told me Mullen was called "cowboy toilet paper" & was Indian tobacco.
Homemade bidet. You can use one of those pump garden sprayers next to the toilet and spray away the "cling ons" before using the cloth. The long spray nozzle can be angled for more ease of use.
Or even using a plastic squeeze ketchup/mustard container.
I even believe you can order something of the sort online, specifically for that purpose, possibly from an outdoor or camping site.
That makes the cloth squares more for simply drying off.
Excellent! I was just sitting here thinking about squeeze bottles. I LOVE Rain Country vids and the comment section!😁😁👍💕
YES! I saw Julianne from Dirtpatcheavan do a video on this very topic, ur explanation is right in line with that very good advice. Tfs! 👍❤️
Yvonne VanSickle ... I prefer that option as well. Surprisingly, people don’t use their brain and will never think of it.
Yvonne VanSickle I love the idea of using a pump garden sprayer! Any squeeze bottle could be used as a “peri bottle” like the ones women use after childbirth.
Im Muslim we are commanded after using the restroom to have to rinse ourselves with running water before wiping and redoing our abalution. I always have a water bottle with me for such an issue and trust me you feel way cleaner than wiping with just paper. Welcome to my constant butt washing world. Lol Stay strong brothers and sisters and good luck with prepping. May we all be protected from harm and calamity. Ameen
We should use both. But the main thing is that you become born again before the rapture: thank JESUS CHRIST for paying for your sins on the cross and HIS resurrection on the 3rd day!!! It must come form the bottom of your heart and don't forget: JESUS is GOD, see John 1!
What is wrong with you people? This is a talk about butt wiping. Please don’t bring religion into it. I feel embarrassed by your bible thumping reaction. They were sharing a cultural custom, not preaching.
Alhamdulillah for Islam, we are prepared for anything
Thank you, I'm not afraid to run out ,I know I can use other thing ,people do need to calm down. God bless you.
Hi Heidi, I have been using cloth wipes since 2011. We went through a really rough time and had to cut out everything that wasn't absolutely necessary. When things got better, no one wanted to go back to toilet paper! I do soak mine in water between washings... that was recommended when I started many years ago. I just dump them in the wash once a week, spin them out and then wash. However, I think I might try the no water method that you suggest since I have to carry the buckets up and down two flights of stairs. Oh and when I use them for the "bigger job" I always wet them, they clean so much better that way!
Thanks for the video! BTW, I just went to etsy and purchased some wooly lamb's ear seed from you. I can't wait to grow it in my garden!
Don't forget an add-on BIDET. On eBay about $20.00...
@@elliottmanning Are you selling these? Considering it is about your 4th post on this thread, one might think so
@@nicolettedean4331 Nope, Have been introduced to the BIDET in Europe back in the 1990s. Was able to find an affordable BIDET on eBay a few years ago and have not bought TP in years!!! A BIDET is so much more hygienic and earth-friendly!!!
This is a good idea and I actually thought to do this when the toilet paper buying panic started. I bought toilet paper, and as a backup when that was gone, I bought paper towels and when that is gone, I have wash cloths.
Another thing I stocked up on that the cashiers were saying NOBODY was buying, was soap.
Also a tip for bringing a fever down, if you get it is take a bath or sponge bath (with a wash cloth) with warm water and baking soda. It pulls the fever right out.
Also peppermint oil. Do not get it in or near the eyes!!
I bought shower gel as well.
I've been following the channel of Dr. John Campbell. He's an a U.K. doctor that puts out videos everyday about Covid 19. He said that a fever is the body's way of fighting the virus. Viruses don't like heat, and it's the body's way of trying to destroy the virus. He said that we shouldn't be so quick to lower a temperature, unless it gets too high, especially in children. The virus can't multiple as quick when our body temperature is up. So when you lower your body's temperature, the virus starts to multiply more rapidly again. He said that it's best to tough it out, even though you will feel terrible. Lowering your temperature actually prolongs the illness. I would suggest of course that you speak with your own healthcare provider.
I've used family cloth for about 5 years now with a handheld portable bidet. Cloth is wonderful!
Spin mop bucket works great for pre clean on dirty cloth diapers! Would work just the same for adult wipes! Then just empty water from bucket down the toilet.
I gave up trying to find toilet paper and headed over to the baby aisle and bought baby wipes, from there I ran over to the fabric aisle and bought flannel. Homemade bidet works great!
No to in my town but oddley plenty of paper table napkins an I got several pks,no one seemed to think of that.just trash them in plastic bag.would STOP UP toilet I think??!!
Why don't you just go over to Home Depot and buy the nozzle they sell for this use?
Works great.
No gross disgusting pile of s**ty flannel sitting in your house.
Not rocket science people.
Nozzle?
@@1994abbygirl Yes, of course. It looks very much like the long spray nozzle at your kitchen sink. It works so perfectly I can't imagine someone coming up with a better idea. It is designed and sold for this exact purpose. Bath section at Home Depot. Hooks up to the toilet fill tank shut off valve in less than 5 minutes. There are millions upon millions of people all over the world that use this method. It's so easy and clean and sanitary you'll be embarrassed to admit that you ever used a caveman method such as toilet paper. I guarentee to you that people around the world stand with their mouth agape shaking their head trying to visualize how you wipe feces around on your backside. Visualize taking a shower after every toilet session while seated and actually walking away clean. Trust me on this, it's the sophisticated way to go. Just need a small towel to pat dry. Toilet paper? Really?
In the 70's Johnny Carson made a joke about there not being toilet paper in the stores and everyone went out and bought it and then the store shelves were empty. I never forgot that and realize lots of things can deplete the stocks of anything in the stores. We arr always very prepared. I also have lots of old sheets and towels which can be used for so many things.
Ordered a bidet from Amazon that attaches to your toilet. These wipes will work great for drying off!
JJ : Hope U got a TUSHY - U will love it ! One of the BEST things we ever did .
I bought the cheap one but I'm hooking warm water to it!
@@maryisabell8760 Is that the Name of it??? I need to get one, so I ask for a "tushy" (or can you order online?)
Yes. We happened to put on a bidet before things got nuts! We only use about 1 roll (400 sheets) in 5 days for two of us. But this idea of using the fabric wipes to dry off makes great sense too!
Me too, got my hand held spray bidet last year and just use wash cloth to pat dry.
Glad we have a paper mill nearby! You can even make your own TP with paper, wood shavings or sawdust. Soak in water, blend into a pulp and pour onto a flat screen, air dry. I’m sure there are videos showing how. Outhouses use to use old Sears catalog pages. My son works in a warehouse and has been working lots of overtime sending out shipments to stores for restocking.
I remember them days... Lol
NICE TRY Deanne
Thanks. I've now added flannel to my shopping list. I live alone and don't have a washing machine or a dryer. I do however have buckets and a cheap drying rack, as well as soap and bleach, and I'm going to invest in a clean plunger and a mop bucket with a wringer.
I remember when I had kids in 60s..
before disposable diapers....loved it...the best shower gifts were a monthly sub to a diaper service....
I love this! I make my own and I embroider the edges which I love doing in the winter when I can't be outside in the garden. I call them "tush napkins" and I love them. They are nice to look at. I use flannelette yes, because they are luxurious. I always enjoy using them. I only use them for Numero Uno but I want to use them for #2 as well now after watching this. For #2 I use leaves from the garden in the summer, stash them in a pail then and bury them when I have time.
Yes I have been using my 40- 4x4" double thickness flannel squares for about 10 years now. They are the perfect size and they just don't wear out I did surge the ends together to keep them neat and together. I too only use them for the light jobs and I use the TP for the bigger jobs. But there is no reason not to do this. It makes you feel so good about yourself. I also use the bathroom a lot through the night so to lasts me through whole week I would double this amount to 80. I believe I started out with 50 and then a few times forgot and flushed a few down. Anyway, I use a small shiny metal trash can from Walmart that has a foot peddle to open it with. I line it with a mesh zippered bag so all I have to do is take it out, zip it up and throw it in the Sunday wash with the laundry.
Good one.
BRILLIANT!!! I am definitely doing that
Thanks for making this video. More ppl need to see it! I told my family to think back to the old days when babies were in cloth diapers, and butt wipes hadn't been invented yet. My mom used warm wet washcloths to clean us up. Rinse in toilet, throw in wash. Younger people today cringe when I tell them that.
I forgot to mention that I've been using pee cloths for a few months, since right before the virus hit (coincidentally, I just happened to be at that stage in practicing using my preps) and I found that a great fabric for pee cloths are those microfiber cleaning rags. They are so soft and absorbent! I picked up a package of bright yellow ones at Home Depot in the cleaning section. They come in a package of about 18 or 20 cloths. Each cloth is about 12" square and it's the PERFECT size for doing bird baths. I use the blue ones for doing bird baths (bathing with just hot water and a cloth instead of getting in the tub/shower). But the yellow ones are perfect as pee cloths when cut in half. So you just need blue 12" squares (folded into quarters and refolded for washing your privates) for bathing and the yellow (6" x 12" folded in half) for pee wipes. :-)
You crack me up .but great ideas.
We need to get back to basics !
😁
I got what you are saying and as sometimes when I ran out of toilet paper I do use those old cloth but it goes into the trash but like you say somthing is coming for us and and we will need those suggesting things
They have those at Walmart also.
No electricity then what
We used to just rinse out the cloth diapers in the toilet until all the solids were gone. Then we soaked in a diaper pail. Then we dumped the soak in the tub and rinsed well - diapers still in the diaper pail. Then it went into the washer and was washed. Then it went through a rinse cycle to make sure all the soap was rinsed out - so baby's delicate skin didn't get a rash. Somewhere in all that is a way to take care of seriously soiled flannel in the absence of toilet paper. I hope I don't have to resort to this, but I'll be able to if needed. I'm going to make some cloth wipes to use for number one. (and plant some wooly lambs ear). Great video. Love to you.
Finally! Someone with some sense. Thank you!
Great points !! Many today wouldn't even consider this. Love your Bible verse today!! God bless and ty for sharing...
Love ya Heidi! I thought the same thing about the buying toilet paper instead of food. We have recycled old clothing...outgrown baby clothing, old sheets etc, for Reusable baby wipes (our son had highly sensitive skin) and we still use them today. I have many many gallon size ziplock bags full of cut up clothing for emergencies etc. toilet paper on hand.
Totally loved you no nonsense approach.
my town is 52-89 miles away from groceries/supplies...yes i live on a monthly alottment, ss, but now theres no tp in those stores , & now our little store that about 800 residents use is out of tp...so stupid...only during extreme snowstorm did this ever happen during my life time...wth...i do remember my grandmothers "ways"...so i will resort to the "old ways"... like your show, thanks
check the dollar stores that's where I got most of mine.
First time visiting your channel. Looking for alternative to TP. Thank you for showing this. I love this idea. My grandparents also used cloth. I will be looking for flannel fabric. Thanks again!
I feel the same as you...rather get food items than toilet paper. I'be been doing the same as you before all this hit (mainly for the weeks money is tight because of emergency expense like car repair until my next check). During these crazy times I'm grateful I listened to how my grandfather told me how he grew up and what they did during the depression... I'm using everything I learned.😁
I love your baskets it brought back memories of watching my great grandmother making them out of bread bags when I was a kid some 50 some years ago
My Grandparents used a Sears and Roebuck catalog in the out house
best thing....they're reuseable.
When my dad built our home. In 1950 we had an outhouse till the next spring when he finished our indoor plumbing. We also used the sears catalog
My dad also. LOL. Not afraid to do that either.
The ink though...
What a great idea and alternative option for emergencies! Thank you for sharing. God Bless you.
After shooting this video in early 2020, I switched to all cloth and have not looked back, Not just for emergencies but for all the time. So much better than toilet paper and I feel rather spoiled using flannel over rough paper. Here is the most recent update I did: ua-cam.com/video/1XljChGp16w/v-deo.html
I use mild soap and water to wash with and recycled cloths as TP. To me, it's a no brainier and so simple because I was raised this way. 🙏🏻❣️🙏🏻
Luv your no inhibitions about perceived taboo subjects, blessed be x
My favorite joke about toilet paper; yes, we do need to joke and keep our sense of humor, is now we know what to do with all those odd socks.
Nice 😁
You are seriously awesome. You inspire me so much to go back to the old ways. I so appreciate your videos. Thanks!
THANK you Heidi for another great & necessary topic! FUN FACT: My Grandmother died at 101 yrs of age. I remember her saying that she remembered when they didn't have toilet paper (before it was invented). They had an outhouse & they used NEWSPAPER to wipe!! Apparently, the newspaper was printed on paper that was more like linen cloth. Their dad would read the morning paper & take it in with him after... That is probably better than having to hand WASH those rags. Very few people get a daily paper anymore, & they're so full of chemicals. I can't imagine, I could wash diapers by hand if needed - babies are totally different than adults. I think I would pray that a bidet was still available & have my husband put one in. I may just do that as insurance LOL I love the idea of tinkle towels for sure. That alone would cut tp use drastically, I am well hydrated so I go often=) I am conscientious about using as little paper as needed to do the job.
Love this! 100s of yrs I know right! Thank you so much for keeping it real! I always loved the soft feel of Lambs ear, but I never knew it was so versatile or knew about its anti-microbial properties till your video...thank you for the great info and tips! God bless my sister in Christ!!! Keep rockin it!
We have stocked up, on most items, but within reason, and over a period of time....no panic here. But, it's crazy that people panic with toilet paper and bottled water, when there is plenty, if they stop panicking! I am an herbalist, forager, hunter, fisherman, trapper, and a great shot, and have a 26 acre pond, and I make herbal medicines...so we are fine, but, I hope the lesson learned in all of this, is exactly what you teach....learn how to be self sufficient, and learn not to depend on stores, and the medical industry, that may or may not be available in a crisis.....thank you for all you do! And most of all everyone.....get close to God, and trust in him, not man, who will almost always fail you....Our Father never does! Trust!
Love this! Thank you!
Please link your email/UA-cam would like info
AMEN.
I have always kept more food then what I need so I had no need to do panic shopping
Yay, and yay! Well said!
Been doing this for a couple of years. I use a sprayer on myself before wiping. It's brilliant! Now u hate tp
This video is from February of 2020. I made the full switch right after shooting it hand have not looked back. It has been over three years now
We live just north of Detroit in a little town called Marysville. And it was just crazy watching the people buy the toilet paper here. But yesterday the store was already restocking. And there was a limit put on how many you could buy. Along with the eggs and other important groceries. It’s just pure madness. I enjoyed your video on using cloth for our uses in the bathroom. I was just going to plan on using washcloths if I ran out of toilet paper. But that would’ve taken about a month and a half. Because it’s just my husband and me. And we only buy four rolls at a time. 😉 also A suggestion for the city folks. They can get bidet.
Yep. I just bought food. I have 3 rolls of toilet paper but I use cloth for #1 and save the paper for the other for now. Not worried about this minor category lol
Great video I also remember cloth diapers I'm a cloth diaper baby LOL I'm only 55 didn't know about the plants that you could use glad I watched her video I'm going to have to get me some seeds
You are the same age as me! Though the above video is a year and a half old now. Here is my recent update: ua-cam.com/video/1XljChGp16w/v-deo.html
Thanks Heidi, Those of us that did use cloth diapers can understand this concept. I do think I will use this method for urinating it will save on the use of the toilet paper we do have. I have not been able to find any anywhere. So this will help conserve. You do bring out and share great information.
I use a peri bottle before the wipe. I like the idea of adding baking soda to the bucket and I'm going to start that. For cleaning I soak the cloths in bleach water. Then do a rinse. Then put in the washing machine. If I'm ever without electricity I have a wash board and bar soap that I occasionally use.
Havent done this for years but when my youngest was a baby she was allergic to all commercial wipes and diapers. I made flannel wipes and used cloth diapers for her. I also used cloth pads for years cause the store ones bothered me. I kept a 5 gallon bucket with vinegar in the bathroom with a lid. My husband put a few holes in the lid cause I thought I should. At the end of each day I pour it all into the washer with my homemade laundry detergent. My cloth reusable dry sheets I had essential oil of lemon on. They came out nice and clean every time. Also the soaking water I used was very hot at the beginning of each day, I didnt keep anything in there all night. I think these wipes system could work well for cloth TP if needed.
I totally agree! I also used the power of the sun to bleach the diapers. Then I was told to let the diapers freeze on the line. Worked! I had to quit soaking them in clorine bleach. Then we started using Amway, so I soaked them in all-fabric bleach. No more holes in the diapers! At the time I didn't know about using vinegar. (After I was done with the diapers my husband and father-in-law used them for various jobs they had. Great on windshields)
Hello, I just wanted to interject as I'm understanding that you're talking about using the wipes directly on your bottom as you would TP. What I've been doing is I have two bottles in my bathroom. One has a mix I make for myself but anyone could just put some water, a drop of white vinegar and a drop of teatree oil. This I spray on myself after I pee and then I wipe with a cloth. For #2, I have a bottle that I fill with warm water and I spray myself after doing my business and then I use some liquid soap and spray again to rinse...THEN I wipe to dry. That way is the cleanest possible method and there is very little dirt or bacteria on the wipes. Obviously, this only works as long as you have access to water and I can only use it at home. But it keeps me super clean and has saved me tons of money and of course is better for the environment. :) Hope this helps. ps: love watching your channel
Monique Champagne I have done something similar with a small plastic bottle, like an old liquid dish soap bottle. Works great and no plumbing a bidet. Now I just perch on the edge of my tub and use soap and the handheld spray ( after using TP). Very refreshing!
In the UK , babies' nappies were terry towelling and boiled in a bucket or in a gas or electric boiler, rinsed by hand and dried on the clothes line. Automatic washing machines and disposable nappies weren't usual for working class folk until the mid 70s onward.
Thanks Heidi.. I have done this for some time.. and it is a real money saver. AND... I feel like I am slumming it when I have had to use paper. What is wrong with us as a society.. I'm 69 and Irish. Back when I was growing up, our toilet was outside the house. I would be terrified to go out in the dark. We used newspaper scrunched up and later really hard toilet rolls. I had 5 children and used to wash nappies. I hated the procedure and my stomach would heave. Looks like we're going back. We've all got very soft. Greetings from Ireland
@@RainCountryHomestead Thanks going right there! :-)
I have not run out of toilet paper, but the first thing I did was go buy some cheap rags (21 for 5 dollars) and a bucket for $5. The only thing that would probably be a problem is after wiping, a person might forget and let it drop in the toilet and it would have to be pulled out before flushing. It is amazing that people do not know how to handle this with no toilet paper and cooking from scratch and freezing food. Thank God I had a mom who taught me.
In Iran there wasn’t toilet paper. The toilets were a hole in the bathroom floor. We would squat and use a watering can and our right hand to wipe our body area clean. The hand was washed afterwards. It took a bit of getting used to but after awhile it seemed normal.
Right, I did mention this in my more recent video and update on this that just posted today: ua-cam.com/video/1XljChGp16w/v-deo.html
Americans and other such countries have been spoiled for too long with throw away paper. I am so glad that after shooting the video you commented on here a year and a half ago that I made the full change to cloth and wish I would have done it sooner. Like many stated, you should wash your hands when you are done anyway and we wash up in the shower as well, so why should it be so difficult?
Love the watering can idea! Ty
