In this insightful video, I have discussed the difference between Phonetics and Phonology with some similarities and common points that both branches of linguistics share. Basically, the video is about the difference and relationship between phonetics and Phonology but I have also discussed the basic concepts attached with both branches in order to clearly draw the contrast between both fields.
For instance I have defined Phonetics with its three main branches i.e:
1. Articulatory Phonetics
2. Acoustic Phonetics
3. Auditory Phonetics
I have also discussed level of analysis in Phonology:
1. Segmental Phonology
2. Supra-Segmental Phonology
In first few minutes I have discussed that both phonetics and phonology studies the speech sounds in language. Then I have elaborated that Phonetics studies the physical or concrete aspect of speech sounds while on the other hand phonology studies the linguistic function or pattern of organization of these speech sounds in particular language. Phonetics gathers data from all possible languages while Phonology deals with phonemes of particular language. For instance Phonology of English deals with sounds of English only.
After discussing the compare and contrast between Phonology and Phonetics, I have discussed them separately to clear the concepts of beginner students of linguistics.
• Here I have stated that Phonetics focuses on the physical properties of speech sounds, and it has three main branches:
1. Articulatory Phonetics: Studies the way vocal organs are used to produce speech sounds.
2. Acoustic Phonetics: studies the properties of resulting sounds wave that travels from speaker to listener. E.g. frequency of speech sounds
3. Auditory Phonetics: studies the way the sound wave is heard and perceived by the listeners.
I have explained that how speech organs are used to produce speech sounds. Speech sounds are produced by modifying the air streams. This can be done by using organs of speech such as tongue, the lips, and the velum or soft palate.
Finally I have discussed the definition of Phonology and its basic unit phonemes. Phonology is concerned with the linguistic function of sounds that is whether a given sound is distinctive in a language. Every language makes its own selection of sounds and organizes them into characteristics patterns. This selection of sounds and their arrangement into specific patterns constitute phonology. The basic unit of analysis in phonology is the phoneme.
I have closed the video with definition of two levels of analysis in Phonology. These levels of analysis in phonology are :
Segmental Phonology: Segmental Phonology analysis speech into a segment, called phoneme. There are many different definitions of phoneme. While on the other hand. Supra Segmental Phonology: analyses those feature which extend over more than one segment (phonemes), syllables, intonation, stress, rhythm etc.
