On a glorious day in mid-June I departed from the canal basin at Stratford-upon-Avon and headed north up the South Stratford canal.
En route I ducked under low tunnels, breathed in for narrow bridges, held my breath on an aqueduct, saw some unusual wildlife and showed off my pasty white legs. All of those treats are included in the video.

Hello. I am not English nor do I have a boat, and I will probably never leave my country, but if I watch your videos and listen to you, even if I do not understand you well, your relaxed way of speaking, and the beautiful landscapes, give me a lot of tranquility. ... Thank you. Greetings.
I've always had boats that I fished and played with on the large Texas lakes but I'm fascinated with these slow narrowboats and the stories of the people who travel on them. Keep on making these vlogs.
I know! Me too! My son is a tankerman for an oil company out of Houston. He is going to be getting his Mariner pilot's license soon, I hope! I love the British shows anyway. I would love to see England where Downton Abbey and the Doc Martin is filmed! I love the crime shows, too!
Great vlog again and again , oh and your voice is just fine don't change a thing.
Thank you! (I wasn't going to!!)
I'm from belgian and we have inlandshipping as well, which is interesant but I've been to london a month ago and I've seen the narrowboats there and I love it, they have so much character, I LOVE your channel
Thank you! Hope you enjoyed London :-)
Hello from MONTANA USA......Great adventure.......very interesting way to live and travel the area. Very enjoyable to watch and Thank you so much for sharing.
Hello back!
That turtle looks like a red eared slider. I’m surprised there aren’t more. Love the blog. I watch when I want to relax.
I've been subscribed for 2 years or so and this vlog popped up on UA-cam as a suggestion to watch, so I did, again. As much as I enjoy your current vlogs, this is a pleasant reminder of the past, especially as covid restrictions are almost over.
i am from the states n i had no idea there was such a big group of canal boaters thats so cool to me seeing all those locks we dont have many in the states so its really cool to see
You got a like for the tyre-d duck joke.
Watching this in corona time lockdown.....So relaxing....
Lovely and enjoyable as always! So glad to have a new vlog! Tired ducks!!!!! LOL!!!
Good ;-)
Hi I live in Australia and really enjoy your blogs
In 2009 my wife and I hired a narrow boat and went down the Oxford canal. We hire the boat from Black Prince canal boat.
We very much enjoyed our time on the canal and the well appointed boat. Keep your blogs coming
Cannot help Binge watching this. The narration is very well written. Besides, everything sounds sublime in a British accent :) Cruising the cut can easily pick up a commercial television contract.
"These are my first cranes" depicting construction cranes, I hope you're proud of yourself
I was, yes. Just wait til you see the title of my next video, coming tomorrow...
I laughed way to hard on that one !! Lol !
13:58 LOLOL you are hilarious, just binge watching! from Toronto!
Working my way back through the VLOGS. They are so relaxing, not that I am stressed being comfortably retired.
Hello, and greetings from the USA. Thanks for sharing the journey. I'm reading L. T. C. Rolt's "Narrow Boat", so I looked for some videos to help me learn a bit more about cruising on these canals. I was able to find part of the canal on Google Earth, and followed along some of the place names and aqueducts as you passed them. It may be the closest I ever get to this sort of trip.
As I watch my way through the series, I have come across another jewel. Although a Southern lady never swears in public, it is most certain these words occasionally flit through the mind. Moreover, this represents EXACTLY what goes through the mind of a lady when one “cocks” up a turn on a narrow drive. From all Southern ladies here in Texas, we salute you! Much ❤️ from our great State of Texas!
Two dodgy puns in one vlog - ooh David you do spoil us !! 😎😲😨
It's Lunch Time - so that means another journey with Cruising the Cut
Between the crane pun, the Dr. Hook song reference, and the aqueduct imagery, this is my favorite vlog entry so far - which is saying a lot! Thank you for posting your adventures.
No idea how I ended up on this video but it was a very interesting watch. Very clear and very interresting even for someone with no care for boating.
Thank you
Those aqueducts were an amazing adventure! Thanks!
I find what you're doing and where you're doing it absolutely fascinating. So beautiful and interesting! I live in America and I've never sean anything like it! Cheers
Good job youtube. Always learnign somethign strange and new here.
"Hmm, let's listen. Dammit!" 🤣🤣🤣.
"Tyred ducks"... ever the pun master :-)
I love the aqueduct crossings! So neat to see your boat way up off the ground and passing over roads and R.R. tracks!
I came here because I just watched a video featuring you 'TV Journalist Quits His Job to Live on a Tiny House Boat & Cruise UK Canals Full-Time', and you mentioned making beer money off of your youtube channel, so I turned off my ad blocker and I am going to watch a few of your videos so I can help you get beer. I would love living on a boat like you do! It seems so peaceful! Thanks for the videos, and hello from New York!
Thank you for watching the ads!
Me too
Very informative and relaxing videos.
Loved the "tired ducks" and "cranes". Serrously, my kind of humor.
I chuckled at the Dr Hook reference! :)
Just beautiful. I hope to live in my own narrowboat for a few years in my late 20s, moored in Edinburgh. It seems like the best way to see most of England in a single holiday . I remember the Bicester canals from early childhood and would like to revisit
The cameraman gets an A+ the Aqua-ducts were fun to watch.
Love that music and sound of the engine. Very relaxing...
Watching the boat cruise thru the canal is so relaxing! And you do an amazing job of narrating of course. Lovely content. Thank you so much for sharing this!
What a lovely video, so relaxing.........
Your videos have provided me another reason to visit England...I'll need to add a few days to my trip and hire a boat!
Beautiful scenery. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Ta
brings back memories from when went from stratford upon avon up there to the grand union and down :)
:-)
I am an old blue water Captain. I do so like watching your videos over dinner to relax. so far I have not seen anything negative safety wise in the videos I have watched. Perhaps I will have to cross the pond and give the canals a go.
Really fun to watch. It’s a mini- vacation. Lovely~ 👍💕🙏🏻
What a nice person speaking in a marvelous English. So enjoyable! Thanks!
Cracking stuff! Enjoyable to watch, fun and interesting :)
As a 33 year old former us soldier and current hillbilly I have no idea why I find your videos so addicting. I just wanted to let you know how diverse an audience you have
Thank you!
Hey Joe, I am a cattle farmer from northwest Queensland in Australia.
I have never seen a body of water bigger than a dam or a boat. Like you, I love watching CruisingTheCut.
Maybe I will go on an English narrowboat holiday when I retire.
@@jacquesdemorton5871As diverse as the u.s. is we have nothing like this. I had no idea places like this existed. I dreamed of something like it as a kid. This definitely seems like something I could spend my life doing
I have been watching UTube for years and your channel is the first one I have ever subscribed to. Brilliant stories and inspirational. Well done David.
Wow, thank you!
Lord, I’m at 5:10 looking at the locks and how old they are and all the hardware on the locks that make them work and the locks themselves. How old they are. In my mind I can-picture dozens and dozens of men digging these locks out when they were new, Generations ago. If there’s one thing that I have a major passion in my heart for it is history, I absolutely love and adore history of just about any type
Very enjoyable watching this video. It reminds me of the days when I used to cruise the Canals including the Stratford back when shared ownership was popular. Watching this was almost as relaxing as cruising used to be.
I find aqueducts fascinating. A bridge that carries a river/canal/etc....neat.
Lovely to see the British countryside go by without having to be on a motorway.!
I am so happy that you show som “hits” of the wall, with your fine ship. What I mean is that I was beginning to think that your are the perfect pilot...so thank you for making your Journey so real for us “armchair” sailers. I get so carried away when I se you coming close to a hit that I forget that you are the only one taking risks. Thank you for being on board and speeding the video up when you have to, that why I don’t get bored but carried away between the engine and your story telling. 🤗👍
I've got to say I love these videos. They're so calming and interesting!!!
This is amazing thank you for showing this
I enjoy watching your vlogs from the states. The commentary at times is very funny. Thanks for taking me along.
Absolutely fabulous!
Many thanks!
So weird to imagine travelling across an aquaduct, and seeing the landscape (roads, etc) so far below you!
It is a bit peculiar, certainly.
A Dr. Hook and a Noel Coward reference both in the same vlog! What excitement!
I'm not even sure I'd made a Coward reference, what was it??!!
CruisingTheCut “Mad dogs and Englishmen” is a song by Noel Coward
I didn't actually realise that was its origin (though I do recall the song, now you mention it). I just knew the phrase. I hang my head in the shame of ignorance.
Your vids are really great. I'm planning a future as a solo narrowboat operator so you advice is invaluable to me. Thanks so much for posting!
That was soothing!
Loved this entertaining commentary...and I'm jealous.
Such beautiful, green scenery. It’s lovely.
The temperature dropped to 1C the other night. Watching this makes me realise how distant the summer feels.
I've got the stove fully fired up now and likely to stay on til Spring, I suspect!
I am glad UA-cam recommended this video to me!
I am glad you watched it!
Yup. Inside and going through all of these is a great time. Thanks for posting this.
is there a chance to rent a kayak somewhere and swim through there for young travelers? the countryside looks amazing
I've never looked into kayak rental but I'm certain there must be places to do it, yes
I did this stretch a couple of years ago (in the other direction) with my family and the in-laws. Great scenery and great memories.
I love your VLOGs. I'm a Yank who has lived in Hawai'i for 45 years now, but I spent the 1967-1968 school year in England before university. After my mates and I finished our A-levels, we contemplated renting a narrow boat and going on a pub crawl through the Norfolk Broads. Thank God we were too broke to do so. Your videos have shown me that if we had taken off on this adventure, we would have probably caused Bedlam and ended up in gaol as well. Still, I have been fascinated with England's canal system since I first arrived there in 1967 and was introduced to it by my grand-uncle. The aqueducts still blow my mind. How I wish I could afford the air fare to return to England and see this canal system once again.
Hahaha, you'd have had a great time :-) Glad you enjoy the videos. Cheers.
There is an actual float through McDonald's in Hamburg, it has it's own dock.
glad you hit the left side LOL!! keep knockin them bricks off... JK love your vides from Colorado US
clean pass the rest of the way the elevated canal is wild
Enjoyed very much, thank you for bringing me along.
I get relaxed just watching these videos.
Very enjoyable vlog! Watching from Sydney Aus 🙋♀️
"Sylvia's Mother" and "tired" ducks got a laugh, David. :)
I am unsure how many times I have watched this episode. Very nice. Thanks
Puny; informative; scenic; just perfect
Cheers
I miss you!!!! Please come back regularly! I have ALS or MND its known as in England and watching your precious videos makes me so happy. Thank you!!!
Hi Mary. There will be some more videos but I'm having a break at present as you know. Cheers
great job of sharing your lifestyle. I first met canal boat folks in Leeds. Brilliant lifestyle. As to the question "why do this?" 1) you can travel huge expanses of the countryside. 2) no hotel 3) your house geos with you. You get to see a LOT, including cities. 14 days free moorage then move on. 4) No rent 5) independance 6) women find it increadibly romantic 7) some of the nicest people you could hope to meet.
Can one rent one of these "boats" to travel on the canals for a couple weeks? I'm in USA.
Absolutely; there are plenty of hire boat firms ready to take your money! Just google "UK narrowboat hire"
@@CruisingTheCut Thanks for the reply, just started watching your channel. Starting to watch the first episodes now. Great Idea on the episodes by the way.
No matter how many episodes of yours ive seen and how much ive learned about overpass narrow boat routes... it blows my mind that narrow boats can scoot over a car highway... and it's business as usual!!!
I agree!!! First time I have ever seen a boat bridge over a roadway!! Usually it's the other way around!
This guy´s just brilliant!
We did the round trip 25 years ago, not so many boats then but a memorable journey- unforgettable.
This one was especially puntastic :)
I’ve just realised I’ve made it past the halfway mark since discovering the channel just two weeks ago! Here’s to the next half. Simply brilliant videos and the narration, camera work and editing is second to none. Keep up the excellent work 👍🏻
"Get a bit of a scoot on", I am definitely going to be using that. There will always be an England!
So good to see one of your uploads xxx love cruising the cut.
Thanks very much for showing that hire spot (anglowelsh)! you've given me an awesome vacation trip idea and quite a reasonable price for a one or two week rental!
This is quite beautiful! I wonder if a foreigner like me, can come to the UK, spend some time training and then rent a boat for a similar trip like this. Not as challenging maybe... :)
Not even any training needed, you can just turn up and hire one, amazingly enough!
A very technical and interesting journey.
Thanks for taking us along!
This is the vlog where the journey began, I enjoyed it so much I went back to the beginning and I am still enjoying them. Just as good the second time around.
Well David i just watched 3 of your video’s and I really enjoyed them , i look forward to many more trips through the canals with you , I envy you because it’s something that i would love to do. Keep the video’s coming , they are very enjoyable and many thanks from Canada .
Thank you ! You have convinced me, narrow boating is not for me. I lived in Stratford. A walk on the towpath is far more appealing :)
Thank you so much for your delightful vlogs! You are helping my stress levels here in crazy times.
I’ve steered a few boats in my time, but none were 58’ long! I’m impressed with your steering skill.
Love these videos, I did not know that there was so much beauty on these little canals.
When I was a kid in the 60s on the Saginaw River in Michigan there was a small restaurant that had a bucket on rope for boaters to write their orders, put money in and ring a bell. They'd pull bucket up and in a while would lower your food down. You never saw a person. It's a KFC now and they don't do it anymore.
Shame! Sounds excellent.
All the bumps going under the bridges... Maybe just for this episode: Colliding with the Cut
That was absolutely stunning! Being from Canada and the Ottawa area, canals are no uncommon, however, the incredibly narrow sections of bridge and aqueducts are amazing! Thanks so much for the cruise.
You’re superb to watch. I’m fascinated as You don’t blink at all. Superb footage thank you 🙏
Very eloquent
After years of lurking yours is the first page that enticed me to subscribe. After years of cruising from Seattle to SE Alaska, fishing, crabbing, shrimping, clamming, trekking into trout lakes, anchoring to visit every hot spring or fjord, visiting every small town to big city plus all the Indian villages as well on the way in me own cruiser (Swedish, if you will) I feel I missed the boat....if you will. Thanks for doing it....however.
Thank you! Welcome along.
I just came across your channel whilst searching for something interesting to watch. Having lived in Australia most of my life I found this fascinating and enjoyable watching! (I did have a chuckle at the 'scorching hot' 34°c temps though. If summer where i lived didnt go above that I'd be quite happy 😂 Happy boating! ^_^
Haha, to us that's a furnace!
I really enjoy your narration and history of the scenes. Great videos everytime!
youtube recommended this finally, got to say I love this stretch of canal the most so far. I enjoy the tunnels and lock combination, so neat.
I just found your channel in my recommendations, due to my recent fascination with longboat lifestyle. You had me ducking under bridges. Holding my breath going through locks and giggling way to hard at your "tired ducks" and so many others. New sub to follow along on your journey ! Hello from landlocked Kansas USA 🇺🇸 🖐👋🖐👋
Welcome along!
Lovely vlog again 👍
how relaxing was this wonderful journey thank you most enjoyable
I love listening to your voice.. you sure are a nice person i can feel ;) take care during this days..
