Here's a crash course on BRS lore: this version of BRS is set in two universes: Earth and the world of colors. There's this girl named Matoi. An ordinary everyday highschool girl, except, she has never experienced emotional pain in her entire life. It's not that she can't feel it, but rather, she's somehow seems to unconsciously avoid situations where she could be emotionally vulnerable which she will later realize was because of her subconscious fear of being hurt. Her life went like this until she met a girl named Yomi, a shy and introverted girl, who she bonded over with their shared love for a picture book titled "The Little Bird and her Million Colors" and for the first time, she took a risk and opened up to someone, which sadly, led to her finally learning what heartbreak truly feels like. Shortly after meeting Yomi, Matoi started having weird dreams about this badass chick with a cannon and a katana fighting other women who looks suspiciously like the girls she met at her school. It was later revealed her dreams were real and that the women were actually their other selves who are the physical manifestation of their insecurities. The way this works is that, when someone developes a strong enough insecurity (due to trauma, anxiety, phobia, mental issues, etc.) another self was born in the world of colors (it's only called "The other world" in the show, but was indirectly implied to share some connections with the picture book Matoi likes). The stronger or more complex the insecurity is, the stronger the the Other Self was and Black Rock Shooter (Matoi's other self) and Dead Master (Yomi's) are one of the strongest one's. Black Rock Shooter, or BRS for short, is one of the special type of Other Selves characterized with the word "Black" in front of their names and have white stars somewhere in their outfits. These types of OS have the ability to freely travel the world of colors and manipulate it to some degree. The only other Black type OS shown in the anime is Black Gold Saw. Although, technically, Strength is a Black OS as well, but her situation is weird. Another characteristic of the Black OS's is that their real world counterparts could access the world of colors through them. That's why Matoi could see the other world in her dreams and would later gain the ability to enter it by using BRS's body. And that's about it. I personally recommend just watching the 2012 anime. It only have 8 episodes, but it's one of the best anime's I've ever watched. Like, it legit got awards, that's how good it is, so just go ahead and give it a try. 😁😁😁
in the brs world BRS and the others. Dead Master. Strength. Chariot. Black Gold Saw. are always fighting each other none stop just endless killing each other these characters are i believe from what i remember are called personalities or something like that. probably was called other selves. from what i remember their fights are related to the emotions or something that the other characters were feeling or going through at that time. so the more brutal the emotions or something that the other characters were feeling or going through. the more brutal the fights got in the other world with black rock shooter and the others. THIS IS ALL THAT I REMEMBER IM REWATCHING BRS AGAIN IN THE FUTURE i dont remember much but this is all i can say. im not good at explaining things
Yea you summed it up well to add the other selfs and the state they are in is reflectives of the girls emotions at the time and an other self dying can lead into drastic changes in the emotional state of the girls them selfs.
