Jesse Hayes... Fil "Wings of Pegasus" has a knack of pointing out little details of artists/bands in informative way where one can appreciate talent regardless if they are a fan of that style of music.

Back in those days bands PUT IN THE TIME PRACTICING!! They mastered every aspect of their craft to the point where they could make it look effortless. This is what's lacking with artists today. Legacy bands will ALWAYS shine brighter for this reason.

Speaking of hair in the mouth, my dad is Alan and he has a story about playing at Red Rock in Colorado, and while he was singing backups a giant moth flew into his wide open mouth. He had no choice but to swallow it and keep singing! True professional, eh?
Also, he said this video made his day. Thanks!

@@blueskiesaboveus ha ok, warning it will be disappointing bc it is more a story I want to get off my chest and it was after your dad had quit. BTW, I am a father of 3 and it is heart-warming to know that even being at the level of success he was at that he missed his family so much he decided it was more important and gave it up. As I dad I really get that. But here is my story - I was 12 or so when Hi Infidelity came out - and in high school I started buying all the REO albums starting with the first one back in 1970 or so. I was an REO nut and I probably am more so today than I was back in the day. Well, I really loved all the guys but I attempted guitar haha and Gary just became my idol. Well, I saw REO live in 1987 - still have the t-shirt I bought and your dad was still in. Then in 1989 REO was playing again so I went to see them - fired up - and trust me I didnt go to concerts - so back then - in college - i had only been to 3 concerts - Lynyrd Skynyd twice and I was on my way to see REO again. Well, back in those times we didnt have internet and access to every bit of info you ever wanted ... well, I go to see REO and they come out on stage and Gary isnt there. Well. the venue was outside and after the concert I folllowed the fence the kept everyone out far enough out of eyesight, climbed it and jumped over (about a 12 foot fence so no easy task). I make my way back to where the concert was and there were a bunch of trailers and I have no idea which one REO is in but someone comes out of one of the trailers and says "the band needs utensils" and I quickly chime in that I will get them. So I go around to the trailers acting like I belong asking for utensils for the band and I go in and there they are. So I give the utensils and then tell them I dont work there, I snuck back and am a HUGE fan (I had my REO shirt on from 1987). It's just me and them. And Bruce gets up and talks to me a little, Neal ... Kevin says that it's "cool you had the balls" to do what I did. I also had my REO live you get what you play for cassette and they all signed it for me. So, it bothers me TO THIS DAY that I professed to being a huge REO fan and if so how could I not ask the question that was burning on my mind "where the hell was Gary and who the hell was this new guy (Dave)". I guess I was just too nervous. It wasnt until about 15 years later watching VH1 behind the music I learned that Gary was kicked out about 1 month before that concert. How cool would it have been to get the scoop directly from the band just one month after the fact had I mustered up the courage to ask. Well, fast forward again and my son and I are going to and REO concert - this was probably about 2017. And I am bound and determined to let REO about what happened many years ago - yes I am a nut lololol. So my son and I work our way up to near the front and after the concert I get Bruce's attention and throw him a note I had already typed up at the office. He picked it up - dont know if he ever read it. The note basically said what I had said and that I was upset for not asking about Gary after claiming to be such a good fan. I put my cell in the letter asking whoever got it (wasnt sure when I typed it who I would have the opportunity to give it to) to call me to let me know they read the note. Hahahahaaha, yes, I know this is crazy but I am just that way. I dont like a lot of things - dont like Hendrix, the Stones, Clapton, Aerosmith etc... but what I like I LOVE - and that is REO and Skynyrd and REO is my number one. Lolol. Pass this on to your dad and I am sure he will think I am extremely weird - haha, I get it. Again, I am just obsessive about what I like lol. I have even contact the hall of fame as to how it is a crime REO isnt there. Very interested to hear your response to this, lololol!!!

@@patrickferrara6668 Ha, that's a wild story! I'll pass it on to my dad! Gutsy of you to climb that fence and fake your way into their trailer. But, I can imagine that once you were in there, it might be hard to be like, "who's this new guy?" It's interesting to think that fans didn't really know why/if there were line-up changes. I took it for granted that everyone would know this stuff. But of course, how would they?! And yeah, my dad had a good run - and it was fun for us as little kids to tour with him and stuff - but we're all glad he quit when he did. Thanks for contacting the hall of fame! Maybe some day...

Three of my friends and I went to see REO in concert in 78 it was great. At least he was able to mend the fences between himself and the band, and perform with them in November 2013 (along with Styx) in a benefit concert for tornado victims in Illinois.

REO played a lot of venues in Peoria, including proms and Homecoming dances so I saw them a lot before they hit it really big. Gary is much loved and respected here in Central Illinois, along with favorite son Dan Fogelberg. Gary was a super-talented musician and writer, as well as a heck of a nice guy.

Even back in the 70’s, I loved how Kevin pronounced his words in this song. It’s a song of grief, he’s making a decision to “fly” or leave a relationship, breaking up with someone and to me, how he sort of emphasizes his words are a little on edge. And he has wonderful hair.

Love REO! I got a chance to speak with Neal Doughty after a small (750 people) club show here in North Carolina, USA. I said "what gives? I have seen you guys play to 20 thousand. Why do this small show?" His reply still blows me away. He said we could have taken a night off, but we would rather play." They also had some new material to go over, so it gave them a chance to do a live run thru. True, true musicians. Nice people, too. After this little show, they took the time to just hang out and chill with fans. Current "artists" for the most part, cannot touch them. Thanks for doing this one, Fil! You ROCK!

I'm still there - and still cringe every time I see a Cronin performance. REO Speedwagon played my High School Homecoming dance in 1970. They were just starting out and got big enough to play regionally (northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin). My brother did the lighting since he was in AV club. They played a regular concert in 1974 at my college and were much better by then.

I saw REO in 1980 High Infedelity in Roanoke, Virginia. Again in 1993 at State Fair in West Virginia with newer lineup. They were tight both times. This band can really bring down the house! Good times rock and roll!

You know, I am a huge REO fan, seen them live countless times and they never disappoint. I do wish Gary stayed with the band because he was the driving force behind REO. Not saying anything bad about Dave Amato but Gary just had this unique style. Also, I want to tell you that I love how you did your homework on REO, saying how they got their name, some of their albums, what they peaked on the charts. Great video! Thank you sir!

Gary Richrath is a perfect example that not everything has to be over the top. A tasteful well toned solo is perfect. Everyone overdoes everything like it’s the last solo they’re ever going to play. Cronin sounds great. After last night when I sat there with an expression somewhat like 😳 on my face, perfect Fil.

Back in the 80's I worked in a New Orleans music store doing repairs. I stroll in after class to find my shop filled with Gary Rachrath's equipment. Vintage Marshalls and Fenders. And more *REAL* flametops I'd ever seen in my life. The owner and I worked very very late that night.

They were great live, I saw them several times and each time they kicked butt. I saw them at the Phoenix Coliseum and they kept playing until the people that ran the Coliseum had too turn to the lights on and make them stop playing. It was great

I did security for REO when they played at Hershey Park Stadium/Arena in 1985. I was in the military police at the time and a fellow MP knew the guy who ran security at that venue. We were able to do REO and The Greatful Dead the following week. This was maybe a month or two prior to the Live Aid concert. We were asked if we could help out for that concert as well, but our commander would not allow us to do that one. I think because of how big it was going to be, he was afraid if something happened that the Army may get into a mess. It was fine though. On the REO concert I was posted on the right side of the stage. It was definitely an experience I'll never forget. It's not everyday you get to meet, not to mention doing security for one of your favorite bands. A girl gave me her camera, and asked me to take some pictures for her. I did it, and I know she got some awesome pictures that night. I never did get to see how they came out. Maybe one day she will see one of these posts and remember.

I loved REO during their 70s days when they were a great mid West hard rock band before the era of the big ballads, though I still find them "a guilty pleasure". Kevin Cronin is a very distinctive singer and his background in folk gave REO a slightly different edge for a hard rock band. Gary Richrath was a very under appreciated guitarist and provided most of that hard rock edge. I have read that Gary was a big influence on no less a luminary as Slash.

Saw REO in Hampton Beach circa 1992 and the songs sounded exactly like the albums. I began to wonder if they were lip syncing until Kevin threw in some extra words in a lyric. Awesome band.

Gratzer is my favourite non-virtuoso drummer, always creating non-repetitive rhytms and fills to serve the song. Later, he added a fill to the last chorus of TFMTF, just 3 accents with the china and the snare drum, that is so cool that I'm always thinking "I need to put this somewhere" ( ua-cam.com/video/tZr4XHlHP1c/v-deo.html ) . As you can also see in this video, Cronin didn't always play the chords in that way.
"Hi Infidelity" was album of the year, and 81 had releases from big pop stars, soundtracks, awesome bands and a murdered Beatle. Old fans hate it, but the songs are so good. Besides the singles, "Out of Seasons", "Tough Guys", "Shakin' it loose", "Someone Tonight", "Follow my Heart".

Such a great band. They paid dues on the road for so long. Good point about their "country" feel. "Flying Turkey Trot" is a great Rickrath show piece. Everything on "Riding the Storm Out" is awesome. "157 Riverside Avenue"...killer.

Huge part of my childhood. Like Cheap Trick, Styx and the Smashing Pumpkins, REO Speedwagon are from my home state of Illinois. Critics were absolutely evil to this band and today they are close to forgotten. I was shocked recently to see their biggest album “Hi Infidelity” listed in a Rolling Stone (I believe) list of best whatever. They have some great music to discover. Thanks for reminding me.🙂

Great analysis. Evolved into one of the best bands ever. Kevin and Gary complimented each other's style. Like, Gary (r.i.p.) wrote Riding The Storm Out & Golden Country (& more but those are two of many peeps favorite's) but then Roll With The Changes is freakin awesome as well written by Kevin so...👍 to REO Speedwagon... & still touring in 2019. Awesome coolness!

These guys headlined Sunday Number 1 in 1982 at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO. They were with Ted Nugent, 707, Aldo Nova the Scorpions. Still touring on High Infidelity, I believe. Such a great memory!! I am a concert photographer as well, I finallly got to photograph them in 2017. We were told to stay out of Kevin's line of sight. Apparently he's on the shy side.
