I often use a 20w Joyo Zombie at band practice and even used it once in a pinch at an open air gig in a 2x12 cab, and it still held up (obviously the cab was mic'd at the gig), so for me I never even wondered if an 80w 5150 would hold up. 😆😎

I tried one the other day and honestly it was somewhat dialed in similar to my guitarist valve king 100 but the low end is much more boomier and bigger on the valve king (100 watts vs 80 watt's). I feel they both have this heavy top end frequency you can't EQ out, I felt like I had to run the low and the mids higher and scoop the highs and dial the presence to taste and leave the resonance around noon to make it sound beefy for the chugs. The burn boost really doesn't do much but accentuate those already annoying high frequencies and the clean with the overdrive is much better but it's obviously more brighter overall than the lead channel. It's a tough sell considering the evh stealth or EL34 50 watt heads are more versatile and bang for your buck, I think it can hang but the guitarist who try the 666 settings to try to dial in guitar tone will be in for a rude awakening this amp you really have to tweak to get a good overall tone

Hey Kyle, how do you think this amp stacks up in different styles of rock (80s metal, classic rock, etc)? BTW, I'm a big fan of the MXR Badass Modified Overdrive as well.
I’ve thought it sounded good as soon as people were getting there hands on them and I could hear it myself,I’m not concerned where it’s from or if it’s tube or solid state, something sounds good to you or not

I was going to say, With the EQ off it was definitely smoother, dare i say more pleasant on the ears. But when you turned he Eq on it absolutely gave each amp it's own distinct voice that made them blend really well together. You're right, tweak that EQ a smidge to get rid of a little bit of the honk and it would be perfect.
Have you tried an Iconic cab? I bought 2 of them and I feel like they have a greenback sound. I put 2 V30s in an x pattern in one of the cabs and they sound good both ways. Pretty solid cabs for the price. Just my 2 cents.
Kyle don't know if you have or had or if you even had a Marshall DSL 100HR head? But that would likely be a good amp to try out in that band practice setting......just my opinion
Not that you need any more boost pedals, but I bet you'd really find a VFE focus/standout to be very handy since you work with so many different amps. It has no clipping stages and it has great hpf/lpf shelving sections. It has massive output too which is cool if the shelving is applied heavily. I usually use mine as a wider less-shelved boost. Kind-of the opposite of a tubescreamer, but it can also do more of a screamer boost with heavy shelving and raised level.

For the price it's pretty ok. I'm about to invest in a new live rig and the Iconic never really made it to my radar. I've been scouting amps like KSR Genesis & Engl Powerball... The iconic is a 5150. The 5150 already changed the tone world. I own this amp and many other EVH amps and it sits in and hangs with all of them. Go try one for yourself.

you guys all playing the same notes at the same time? CHugga chugga? hmmmmm try some melodic upper register playing to fill out the sound more. Maybe upper triads? When you all play the same notes you get frequency cancellations.
Could those transformers be any smaller? Low price point equals low grade internals. Look at the internals of a Peavey Windsor, it's horrifying. Plastic shaft pots, particle board headshell, small asian transformers, high tolerance, low temp electrical components (so the amp sound will range notably in different environmental conditions), etc. Any amp can sound decent for a few years, but the durability would absolutely pale in comparison to an early 5150. Low price point seems like a "deal", but durability costs.
From all the videos I have seen I'm not a fan of this Amp. It seams people are really trying to tweak it to find a tone. Doesn't have that out of the box plug and play. I'm a huge fan of 5150's . But for a budget Amp this is what you get. To much high end sizzle for me. To each his own. Great video man.
What the hell does in a band setting mean? I see you have a PA so why exactly would it not be able to hang in a band setting? Also, the objective is usually to keep the source as low as possible for clarity in a live mix.
Ok, I NEVER COMMENT BUT IT'S TIME... I am here bc it was linked to a friend mines video... LOUIS TORRES... Like I tell Him, all you guys who use these amps and pedals for boost and color are trying to achieve something that is impossible in a Live setting... If you got this far, I'll explain... At the young age of 45, playing since I am about 15 at clubs like L'amours BROOKLYN, Limelight ect... Just using at the time a MARK4 BOOGIE,I got what ppl called the best sound for recording but in a live setting using nothing but the amp or the amp with the amps EQ, that it's besides things like Delay ect... You can't expect to get what you hear on a recording in a Live setting... That's what i seem to hear when watching all these videos including my Friend... For example, if you like Hetfields sound on And Justice... You can't get that in a Live setting using boosts or pedals... You can using a straight Boogie and the sound board doing the rest... You are hearing an EQ'd, mixed and MASTERED sound... You ppl seem to try and get it straight out thre amp which is IMPOSSIBLE... A boost is for a lead or maybe slight boost for rythm... But there is no reason to put a Boost on a Rec,or 5150 or pretty much anything in a HC, HEAVY setting bc you will be lost threw phase no matter what you do... That is why yr other Guitar player is heard and you ate not, EQ on or off it just doesn't cut... As far as the new 5150 goes im suite in the right hands dry it sounds great... Just leave our alone, and use suttle changes along the way... I'm not saying you used a boost bc I can only get threw the first 15sec,bc it sounds horrible... I don't mean anything bad but you guys need to let the amps uppity all pay lots of money for fyi what they are meant to do... Its like getting a haircut when y egg not a barber and telling them what to do... trust in Him to give toy a good haircut instead of what toy think might fit you but looks bad in the end, they know what they are doing... Same as the amp, trust in it. Might take time, but it will sound good... About a year ago at a live studio with my Friends band bc they needed a Guitar okay that can learn the stuff in a day. I used an EVH for the first time, it was thre white one... No boost, it's not my style but that being said, everyone thought it sounded good bc I backed away from what I would normally do, and let the amp do what it does best on its own. What I can trek was, GAIN... so that's what I used it for... This it's not Rocket Science, if they needed a boost, use what was given in the amp... And all Dist pedals besides a few do thre same thing... Peppers Tree, ect ect are shooo the same... DS1, or the Green Tube Screamer for both under 200$ together its all you need. 1 it's gain, the other has color... done... Trust me, try it... it works for the best out there for a reason... Thank you for reading, our yr welcome which you will find out in time if you reading this give it a try...

I think Kyle and Tone Wars has been the most transparent channels in delivering the real sound of this amp.
The iconic is a 5150. The 5150 already changed the tone world. I own this amp and many other EVH amps and it sits in and hangs with all of them. Go try one for yourself.
@@ivsiguitarist other half ? You mean 1 guy who's bashed it since day 1 and has never played one ?
Any REAL reviewer has done comprehensive testing of the amp, they test the amp alone, then vs other amps and like Kyle did, in a band setting.
@@ivsiguitarist I have a Engl Fireball 100, it's so brutal. I want to try a Powerball so bad. I bet it's gnarly. I'm also a huge fan of KSR. I think the Eros is the greatest OD/Boost ever made. I'd love to get an amp from Kyle one day.
P.s. when we gonna kick it and jam 😆 pandemic phhh let's get down YOU got the gear its a rescission share the baddass ness lmfao i wish i could spend a day or soo tryn yur favorite setups I'll bring my own 🎸
Much 💘 tho Kyle keep on jamming bro
How dare you use a boost pedal! 😂
Would have helped if you ran it through his cab at one point. Or switched cabs. Or brought your own. 😂
you guys all playing the same notes at the same time?

Long winded rambling is right!
grumpy and old is right!
Hey can you add the song ”Ramble On” by Zep? 🤣 haha
Not enough mids for you huh???? shocking hahahaha
What the hell does in a band setting mean? I see you have a PA so why exactly would it not be able to hang in a band setting? Also, the objective is usually to keep the source as low as possible for clarity in a live mix.
Is it really that hard to figure out? Or are you just trying to be inflammatory
@@belligerentamateur I’m sorry I’m not trying to be rude. However,The premise is nonsensical.
@@Jbeland1 maybe in your mind, but I would say you're definitely in the vast minority
Dude, I didn't read this nonsense. You have too much time on your hands.
Different speakers don't make that big of a difference, unless you're comparing Rocket 50s to G12s or V30s lol.
couldn't be further from the truth.

May trade a gretsch for a 6505+ tomorrow and also buy one of these 5150 iconics. Lets hope both pull through.
