96 and 97 were the best years. Last body style with glass headlights that never fog up, and last body style with TOYOTA in big letters across the tailgate.
My dad regrets selling his 2003 tacoma. That truck never let him down. Good trucks. Been looking at one like this one to buy for work and they're really expensive!
I bought a 99' Tacoma, 2.4 base model a few years back with 364,000 on it. I rebuilt the whole top end, transmission shifts smoot as silk, has manual door locks, window crank, climate control, the body is straight and the black paint even polished up real nice for its age... I wouldn't trade this truck for nothing.
Your right about the 1st gear low- my 88 standard rig always surprises people with there new rigs how well it handls and climbs out here in the Mojave Desert CA.
I have a 97 with the 2.7 liter and the 5 speed. It definitely isn't swift but I consider it a survivor, 86k miles after 22 years! It needs some love and I'm working through it.....
Totally agree!! I hate the look of the newer ones. I had a chance to buy a 2nd gen forerunner with 160000 miles for 7000k but I didn't because I just couldn't stand looking at it. Silly, maybe, because it's just a car. Til this day I still stand the look of the newer models!!
I have owned toyota trucks from 1978 to 2001 12 of them to over the years ... just let my 87 go, to payoff my 2001, I miss it the 22r and 22re engines are some the best I have ever have worked on I can take a 22r apart and put it back together in my sleep I love this 2001 sr5 trd stepside I have now
I just retired from work in April 2022 . My family have always had trucks and I have always had a truck until about 5 years ago . Biggest mistake was that I let my truck go . In my lifetime I have owned Chevy , Ford , Datsun and Nissan . And I was lucky that each one were good trucks , no problems out of any of them . Even had the old classic trucks . I just found a 2004 Toyota Tacoma xtra cab with the 2.4L with the 5 speed manual transmission with 78,000 original miles that an older couple owned , 1 owner dealer maintained and and excellent service record . Frame is great . The only major things that I had to do were re condition the paint as it was a little oxidized and Fix a couple of spots on the seat . It also came with a really nice Jerico truck cap . I also put a set of American racing Baja rims with Hankook tires on it as well as tinted the windows along with updating the sound system with a new Pioneer system with Bluetooth and back up camera . Had any hose and belt replaced . The truck also came with a dealer installed trailer hitch . The only thing I plan to tow with it is my atv . This truck is in excellent condition and runs great . Will do all I want it to do and not having a monthly payment . Again got lucky :) Just found your channel and it’s very informative and I enjoyed the video . Thank you and I did subscribe to it . All my friends call theirs tacos and I didn’t get it at first and they all have personalized taco tags on their trucks . I just got mine and it’s called Taco- exp. For Taco express . Thanks again from a semi old dude and his truck in Virginia ✌️ . Forgot to mention that I didn’t get the 4 wheel drive lol . But I’m good with it .
Was looking for random first gen Tacoma videos and came across your channel. Love the videos and the truck! Keep them coming bud! Maybe try doing a top 5-10 mods or cheep mods for your first gen Tacoma?
Great video! Watching these make me want to drive my first ever truck again. But nooooo someone ran a stop sign and wrecked the front end on my 98 taco that I had for 2 days😂
I love my 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4 4 extended cab five speed 2.7liter it's been the best truck I ever have owned and I will never sell it even when people asked me if I was going to sell it and I always say no way!!
I have a 1991 toyota hilux 2.2 petrol Xtracab 4x4 with now at 989k on it and I love it!!!! THESE TRUCKS ARE BULLETPROOF...use it going to the city and all day on the farm...best trucks ever built!!!
Im original owner of a 99 Taco, 5 speed, 2.7 engine with 188K. Still have original clutch and starter. Not much for quick acceleration but it is dependable. Ill keep it until it dies
Hey been, I have a tachometer on my 97 base model Tacoma single cab! Not sure why because I have manual everything else but not sure why you don’t have a tachometer but I do!
I just found one for $800 the sr5 it looks really clean looks like ladys husband passed and she's selling it by description of it so I'm gonna show up cash in my pocket ready to buy it 🔥🔥then sell my 2008 Infiniti G35, the Toyota looks like it's got lift kit on it too
Man I had a mint 92 Hilux I bought new and I so regret selling it, the prices on them now are more than what I paid for it new which was 13500 new lol.
I have a 93 one of the main things about it i like is the manual transmission an it a compact truck the new ones are to big I like the compact way better
I’ve had to replace a lot of window motors that were shot but I’ve never had to replace any component from cranks ever. I also just like them better, but I see how most people disagree with me and like the convenience of automatic windows and that’s completely fine
@@BernonCars but like I totally agree with you. I literally want a tin can with a bulletproof 1.5L with an auto transmission and nothing but a radios, windows, and heat.
I have a 97 Tacoma and people are always wanting to buy it. I'm not selling. I love my Toyota and it runs perfectly.
Someone selling me one for 4k with 179k milles looks like this one
96 and 97 were the best years. Last body style with glass headlights that never fog up, and last body style with TOYOTA in big letters across the tailgate.
Absolutely!!!
gotta incude 95 in there, mines a 95 and matches what you said
We have an 03. We love it. Except for the damn plastic headlights.

Nice, absolutely a keeper!
I just bought a 99' base Tacoma 2.4 with 40K and it looks amazing.
Your right about the 1st gear low- my 88 standard rig always surprises people with there new rigs how well it handls and climbs out here in the Mojave Desert CA.
I got the same 96 LX, 4x4 and manual, v6 with 325000 miles, but still solid and fun to drive!!
Sweet!!
I have a 97 with the 2.7 liter and the 5 speed. It definitely isn't swift but I consider it a survivor, 86k miles after 22 years! It needs some love and I'm working through it.....
Dude you know your stuff. And your truck is one CLEAN example. Enjoyable watch.
Thank you sir! I appreciate that!
great vid. gearing is so low in these things you can start in 2nd gear from a dead stop
I don't which one is better but I'm still driving my 88 Longbed 4×4 before Tacoma came out!
I had a 96.
Love the 1st gen Tacoma's classic clean lines. I really dislike the bulging, puffy fenders and Tonka/HotWheels look of newer models.
Exactly. The first gen were leaner and meaner. I have a 95 and it’s awesome.
The new ones especially look like toy trucks!!

Excellent history and fantastic truck! You’re very informative.

Hahaha yup! Neighbors!
@@BernonCarsSaw your blue Taco on Pebble Beach Dr on the mini eagle scout parade thing, I was driving the ambulance lol.
LOL that’s awesome!! What a coincidence 😆. Had the truck all dressed up too haha
The Tacoma TRD off-road is still available with a manual transmission if you get the 5 foot bed.
Yup I think I mentioned that
Great video. Thanks for all the history. Great looking truck, I also love the mid to late 90's look way more than today's.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed

I had a 4X4 XtraCab 96, 2.7 Manual Transmision, Cobalt Blue Pearl

Hey would you kindly explain the slang expression; “wind the piss” ?!
Rev it all the way to redline
That’s a really nice front grill!! Where did you buy it ? Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you! I made it in high school!

Hi, I have a Tacoma 97 4x4, what is the size of those tires and the rim? another question what is the intake model?
These tires are 265/70/16, stock 3rd gen Tacoma tire size. Got the intake from eBay
Hey been, I have a tachometer on my 97 base model Tacoma single cab! Not sure why because I have manual everything else but not sure why you don’t have a tachometer but I do!
I know! I really wish I had a tach lol
Bern Romulus definitely helps with knowing when to shift and so on too!
Yeah, I’ve gotten used to it, but i still one one LOL
@@owenl.6815 I got an 98 base model without a tach. I think only the v6s came with a tach on base models.
Great video, did you ever get the Tacoma lifted ?
Thank you! Sadly I didn't! The rust got too bad even after fixing it so I sold it recently!
Good video! Nice, tasteful mods. Very nice. Love the TOYOTA lettering throughout. Subscribed!
Thank you very much!
I hace a Tacoma 95 in color red😁
Dig the retro intro

I like the grill! I'd love to put Toyota in mine! Is that an aftermarket or did you fabricate that yourself?
Thank you! I made it myself! Found a write-up on a Tacoma forum

What mpg are your 3.4s getting?
I don't really remember well but I think like 16/17 haha

Toyota should bring this truck back to compete against the Maverick
The new ones are bigger
