  • A trip to SC was long overdue for Dane, so off we went on a windy, 20'C day and a bit of new (for me) 28mm tyre testing thrown in.

28mm 😳 wow, welcome to the 2020’s 😉. You need to put one on the front as well, better rolling, more comfort so quicker than any aero gain from a 25mm which would be minimal anyway.

Yeah, I'm a slow adopter....! Also depends how fast you go - at high speeds aero is worth far more than Crr. 28mm is 12% worse frontal area than 25, but also the Cd is potentially worse too if you have any ballooning going on. Also, most will run 28s at a lower pressure than 25, making it a wash on Crr. But maybe, maybe, I will try 28 in front....!

@@CyclespeedToursI’ve always though 28’s are they way to go for sleep climbs, because the Crr gain is stronger than the weigh penalty (and aero matters far less at the low speeds). But it hurts my weight weenie mentality to admit this. Interested in Andrew’s thoughts …

@@georgec2894 yeah, the 50g extra hurts me too, but in the end it probably makes me quicker, especially if I can push a bit harder on the descents.

RyanH at weight weenies has some creaking issues with his new Extralites as well! On his Litespeed T1sl thread. He did mention cassette being an issue too though. I've had creaking Duraace cassettes before.
I'm surprised she didn't drop you to get away from the noise 🤣

Thanks, yeah, sounds like he had the exact same issue as me. The cassette is very loose on the body and there is no ´locater´spline, so you can mess up the alignment if you're not careful. I tried to ride up SC in 5th gear to limit the noise, but my knees said no!

Good god. That creak is horrendous. Superb advert again for Extralite. Obviously they make shite wheels that are grossly overpriced.

Yeah, not good, and they haven't even replied to my email asking about it.

Is the creak coming from the BB? My Ostro just developed a creak… turns out the drive side ceramic speed cup was loose. It also needed more assembly paste/lube from the Factor build… simple fix… lubed everything and tightened to spec… no noise!
Also, I’ve been running 28’s with TPU tubes… tubeless is a love hate relationship… I love Conti STRs but they seem to get big cuts easier and I’m tired of putting a tube in a gooey tire that the sealant can’t fix…

No, this time was a cassette not sitting nicely on the freehub - this is very loose fit on the Extralite - after a refit it was OK.
The Ostro is known for creaks from the BB - I have had plenty. I Loctited the blue cups in (a weak compound is fine), re torque bolts regularly and regrease often.
I use tubs, so tubes and sealant are not for me!

I had same issue with creaking on my wheel when I bought it. For me the issue was a dry freehub. I’ve removed a freehub body and lubricated the ratchet with light dry chain lube and it went away to this day(about two years). Your wife is a rockstar to be able to climb Sa Calobra! She should be proud of herself!

Thanks re. wife, I'll pass on the compliment, she is very light which helps. I'm surprised about your free hub body, usually well greased from factory. And they specify ONLY their special grease in there, because others could degrade the O ring that holds the pawls in place.

That sound a lot like a dura ace cassette spider creak. The first largest block of the cassette if you know what i mean

    • @CyclespeedTours
      @CyclespeedTours  11 місяців тому +1

That is definitely a thing, I have had some break in the past, but not this time. Turns out the cassette was not sitting well on the holder, as it is so loose.

Do you have the the small shim on the back of the new cassettes? I removed mine as it made the cassette wobbly 😅

@@Eirikkinserdal I was told to take it off, so I did. To be honest it didn't seem to make much difference if it was on or not.
