I cannot articulate how strongly I agree with this.
aiklarung a Martian country is illegal due to the Outer Space Treaty, that says no country may claim ownership on anything outside of Earth, which includes land.
If a Martian country is formed, all countries in the UN (and anyone based in these countries) will not send any more supplies to said country. A Martian colony will therefore have to be fully self sufficient before declaring indipendence.

Hoyt Mueller It can start as that, but even US law (one of the best in the world) could be improved. Independence would be pretty easy once they're self-sustaining, unless robotic police-state becomes a thing before then.

Plus if Tesla really takes of and starts mass producing trucks and cheap cars, that might be a way to fund it. Elon pledged his personal wealth for this and I think there is a good chance he might actually make that kind of money with Tesla and Solar City.
That's a tax increase of around 0.1% for the USA and we get to go to have a colony on Mars. I would love to be in the generation that colonizes Mars. The last generation did the same to go to the Moon. Or we could take 1.2% of the military budget and put it towards Mars without a tax increase.

The reason is probably that NASA will look bad if they blow up rockets every now and then, so they need to be almost 100% everthing is perfect. This of course takes time and money so that's why it goes so slow. Also it's important to remember that spaceX is living on NASAs shoulders. It's not like spaceX could have happend 50 years ago

Johnny Favorite Why don't we just settle places like the Sahara and Antarctica. We could use desalinated water made from seawater coming from the rising sea-levels by using the harsh sun for solar power and irrigate the whole place. Then there would suddenly be way more food and living space, reducing violent expansion of nations and we can still say we are colonising and pioneering. That sounds way easier than going all the way to Mars, with a very difficult return journey if you get homesick.

It seems there are a lot of people in the comments bashing Musk's plan. Now, it's totally understandable to be skeptical. Most of the technology posited here is either still in development or entirely theoretical, and most of it has yet to be proven reliable. It's not only expected, but reasonable to reserve doubts about the feasibility of the mission.
However, the manner in which you all seem to approach these issues is deplorable. Rather than looking at them as obstacles that need to be overcome or worked around, you view them as insurmountable barriers. I get that there's such thing as a healthy dose of cynicism, but come on people! At the beginning of the Apollo program in the early sixties, a great deal of the technology that eventually took men to the moon hadn't been developed yet. We hadn't docked in space, we'd never gone beyond low earth orbit, we had no idea about the radiation risks, the risks on the lunar surface, the rocket design or the eventual cost. When the concept was presented, the idea likely seemed just about as outlandish as Musk's idea. And it had its fair share of naysayers.
But we got it done in ten years. Now, with a project like this, obviously it's going to be a fair bit more difficult than landing men on the moon. But the necessary technological innovations are all of the same spirit as those present in Kennedy's speech in the early 60's. It'll be difficult, and many aspects of the plan may seem nigh impossible as of now, but we have to try. I dearly hope that you people aren't engineers. I'd hate it if the people in our society responsible for innovation and technological gains were all such hopeless cynics. Engineers are supposed to be the people that can take the apparently impossible and make it actual. That's perhaps the most venerable attribute of the entire profession. So, instead of sitting here blabbing on about how unrealistic and impossible this mission architecture is, why not reserve a little skeptical hope, and let the engineers do their job?
And how many design iterations (read: descaling ITS) are behind us now ? :D

The fact is no matter how much you dedicate to fixing earth it will never be perfect, and Earth will eventually die, sooner or later, also there is the chance Earth could die in a few years because of a massive rock flying towards earth, wiping out the only known place to hold life in a matter of minutes

If Earth does fall apart as you say it will, where would we go? If we develop terraforming tech, we could likely save Earth's ecosystem and what not, or we could just migrate to a new world.

This video made me so happy. Seeing mars made habitable, seeing mars as a checkpoint, by which all the solar system becomes a vast ocean which we can explore, it just filled me with joy. I really want to see this happen.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, this is our decadence as a civilization. It seems to us too expensive to spend 10 billion dollars in a decade for space exploration and some were fainting at the cost of the large of the large hadron collider(~6.5 billions over years).
Nevertheless we have not the smallest qualm about spending 3 trillions in only a year for armaments ,and for killing, for no particular reason, other than strategic global gameplay and making money for the players. If these people want to play, there are more than enough strategic games out there, no spilling of blood involved.
So, no-one said it is bad to search efficient ways to space travel. In fact it is very important that we do our best towards this direction. If we used only half the money we waste every year for guns, we could get at least 2 missions to Mars in the next year, efficiency be damned. And if we spent the other half , next year we would have a thriving colony in just 2 years. Now if we did this efficiently we could establish presence in the solar system in a decade or so.
Which is very important , if for nothing else , just for the experience gained , living in and exploring space. Because all this talk about interstellar travel(warp drives and fucking wormholes)s is just crap, coming out of those people that don't want us space faring at all. Do first the easy and the feasible , then do the hard part. How can someone think about going to the moon if they have not yet invented the balloon and the airplane?
Plus there's the real cost in terms of energy and materials and the virtual one in terms of money. Having 100 ships as a planet going around the solar system, is not sth so resource intensive that our planet can't handle. Especially if we turn to solar for our lowly earthly needs which is more than enough for millions of years of development.
I just can't stand people bitching about how expensive is space travel, when we waste money just for fun and for satisfying our vices. Even if we were still rocking on the 60's we could still do this, let alone now with the sophisticated computing machines, new materials, and advances in genetic manipulation.

Remember that the atmosphere is very thin, so it can't exchange lots of heat with other bodies. But this is a positive aspect because it's easier to warm up spacesuits and habitats

The fuel making process needs a ton of power, the ship will need a reactor.
The solar panels would already be taxed to maximum just to keep the passengers alive and productive.

His idea isn't to only allow the rich to go think of it like this:
You grow up and decide you want to work and save up enough to one day buy your own house (which costs close to the amount to go to Mars)
Or you could work and save for a ticket to Mars, you don't just have to have such money on hand it could be something you could work towards getting, just like a house. Plus with how few people will be on Mars at first there will be no shortage of jobs there so once you get there you can immediately begin working and being paid and you can save for whatever the next big thing you want in life is.
This kind of stuff always get a tear forming in my eyes because it would be a dream for me to get on Mars or in space over all.
The ITS is now starship and it is about to conduct an orbital flight test. Good work, Spacex!

Josh Sherrington I imagine the low gravity will be good for old people. I think it has the capacity to extend human life. but, I don't think the low gravity would be good for people 50 or below.
Couldn't you just wear some extra mass, so that your weight stays the same?
It would work in some ways, but still it wouldn't be the same. Yet we don't have the knowledge of how a 0.38 g gravity will affect us, as we only have the 0g space station as a reference.
I was lucky enough to fly in a 0g plane, and we simulated martian gravity, and it's true that it changes a lot of things : Even if there's still 38% of the gravity, you already feel like you're almost in 0g.

Based on a presentation I saw him do, SpaceX is about 5% of the company. They can't just dump every penny they have into this project, it is making very real progress though just not as much as it could with higher funding.
He just needs to build one and fly it around the moon.. the U.S gov has to go or they will be contracted by the Saudis or someone to go lol.

Why not to build some kind of orbital shipyard, then build ships in orbit and then launch them from orbit with a hell of a payload?
Demoblade because that'd be ridiculously expensive and SpaceX would go bankrupt. Plus, you'd need to build the ship anyways to get everything up there. And you'd need to bring the cargo and people there anyways, defeating the point.

Demoblade it's not more efficient. you still have to bring everything up there. it's a complete waste of money, you still need to build all the same ships, send up the same supplies and same people. here's the thing about the space shuttle, it was never as cheap or efficient as its designers thought it would be. not by a long shot. what spacex is doing here, this is what efficient looks like. no multi-billion dollar redundant megaprojects. no architecture that would take 30 years to build before you even get to use it.
The ships themselves would be cheaper as they dont need the initial force to enter orbit so fuel prices will go down. The project would be expensive but it is still possible. It would also greatly forward human advancment in space travel due to the extra fuel. Money shouldn't be something that gets in the way of technological advancment on such a huge scale.
Uh, but u still have to bring the supplies back from earth. Unless they can build that space lift thingy first.
