2022 Honda Grom ABS Review | MC Commute

- Honda’s lovable Grom sparked interest in the small-displacement streetbike segment when introduced for the 2014 model year. With its fun-size appeal, reasonable price, and ease of ownership, it became an immediate hit. For ’22 Honda upgrades its 125cc minimoto ($3,599 as tested) by increasing versatility and ease of customization, all of which we reported on during the 2022 Honda Grom 125 Preview article. Now it’s time to ride.
--
The Grom is half the size of a modern standard. It doesn’t occupy much garage real estate and it is one of the easiest street-legal motorcycles you can ride. If we had to retake a motorcycle endorsement skills test, it would be aboard a Grom.
Despite its diminutive size and sub-4-foot wheelbase, the cockpit can accommodate full-size adults. A flatter one-piece seat, with denser foam, makes it easy for tall riders to scoot back in the saddle opening up legroom. There’s also room for a pal, with a weight capacity of 309 pounds. A helmet hook beneath the seat keeps your lid safe when away from the vehicle.
As opposed to a scooter, the Grom offers a traditional and manual motorcycle experience. The cable-actuated clutch offers light lever pull with a wide engagement. Throttle response is mellow and well suited for new riders. Although there is no lever position adjustment, the OE setup works for a wide range of hands.
A new five-speed gearbox adds versatility, both in terms of acceleration and fuel mileage in top gear. The first four cogs are shorter as compared to the previous four-speed design. However, fifth gear is a tad taller, which helps eke extra mpg at highway speed. We registered upwards of 97 mpg. With its larger-capacity fuel tank (0.67 quart) it gives a 150-mile range between fill-ups.
Outright top speed on level asphalt is roughly the same (60 mph). However the ‘22 Grom is capable of achieving extra speed down hills.
A more undersquare 124cc air-cooled engine affords added torque complementing the transmission design. The engine’s compression ratio is boosted too (0.7). It breathes from a larger airbox with a replaceable air filter (every 12,000 miles). We like that the engine runs on standard 87-octane fuel.
Outright acceleration is nothing to write home about for performance-minded motorcyclists, but the Grom offers slightly more pep and can keep up with, and usually out-accelerate, sleepy automobile drivers at stoplights.
The LCD instrument panel finally includes a gear position indicator as well as an RPM adjustable shift light. The display is easy to read day or night.
Maintenance-wise the engine benefits from an engine oil sight glass and a removable paper oil filter element (replaced every 8,000 miles). After initial 600-mile service, Honda says the engine can go 4,000 miles between oil changes. Curiously, valve clearance inspection is also recommended at this interval.
In motion, it’s more maneuverable than you’d think considering its 234-pound claimed curb weight (owner’s manual). It turns quickly and is easy to put anywhere on the road. The suspension does an adequate job of soaking up bumps. Of course, you’re going to feel big dips and the effects of worn-out pavement more than a full-size streetbike, but what do you expect for a $3,599 motorcycle?
Rolling on 12-inch cast aluminum wheels shod with road-oriented and tall-sidewall Vee Rubber tires, the Grom offers enough cornering grip to put a smile on your face. More sport-oriented riders should remove the lean-angle-limiting footpeg feelers.
Front and rear disc brakes keep speed in check and we appreciate the double-piston caliper up front. For a $200 upcharge Grom riders can add IMU-powered ABS that keeps the front wheel from locking during brake application. Considering its size and intended use however, we’d opt for the non-ABS version. Plus it’s around 4 pounds lighter.
Just like Big Red’s modern Rebel cruisers, the Grom has easy-to-remove bodywork which lets owners customize their Grom more easily. An LED head- and taillight return, which help make for a capable night riding steed, but it would be nice if it offered LED turn signals too.

Bravo to Honda engineers maintaining such efficient MPG even with the aerodynamic drag of Adam’s rockstar hair.
😂
Doubles as a safety device in a crash…….hairbag😂
This bike would look great parked in front of a Tiny House.
Lol
🤣, nah it would look better if it was mine
Both not practical
This is an inside bike lmao
Bruhhh hahaha
Adam, being a Grom you need to wheelie the entire commute to the office, lol.
.....and about 60 of his closest friends. Don't forget the Go-pro!
Lol. Very funny.
The grom looks like an adventure bike that was left in the wash for too long
i agree and i love it
really gotta try it one day, i wonder how good it rides
Shame they don't sell the exact bike in 200cc's.
2024 Freedom fighter 200
I've done a couple 24 hour endurance races on one of these things here in SoCal. Reliable as a brick. Not the best track weapon, but still fun to ride and comfortable, and I would do it again
Some crazy moded up groms on the track where I live.
Sounds fun. Whats those events called?
In my area, there is an organization called UMRA and M1GP @@Sakuleta2
Dude, you're the best at this.
You love MCs and it shows.
Thanks for the review.
This great review mentions the bore/stroke relationship to torque! Nice!!
Also mentions 4 shorter gears and a taller 5th gear! Super nice!!
Guaranteed that other reviewers don’t mention that.
Yep. No one does it like us, man.
Playback speed x 1.5 sounds normal.
Thanks.
To the non native English speakers watching his video: the talking speed is good, sometimes you all go too fast
It would be nice if a Grom had 1.5x's the normal speed, lol!
@@painterboy454 they do, it’s called a big bore kit 😎😆
@@hellfire08, we need a big bore from the factory not the ham fisted unreliable one's produced by owners, lol.
This was the best complete test of the 2022 grom i have seen,,,i would like to see a real test of 2022 honda monkey,,, to see how both bikes compare,,,this test makes me want to buy another Honda ,, the toy fun factor is definitely there ,, keep up the good work , will keep an eye on your channel as we all move forward
With gas prices as high as they have been, I’m seriously considering a grom as a commuter bike for work. I live about 5 miles from my work so how often would I need to fill up roughly? Every couple weeks?
Hehe same here! It would be great if it's a couple weeks. My job is 6ish miles away
Well it gets about 134mpg and I think the tank is like 1.5 gallons, so maybe about a week and a half?
@@pure2strokepower how did u get that math. If he rides 10 miles a day-5 to work 5 back, then 5 work days a week would be 50 miles per week. 130ish mpg at 1.5 gives roughly 200 miles. So that's 4 weeks of work travel on 1.5 gallon of gas, or about $6-7.50 for a month of business travel at current gas prices.
@@nikhilmalik62 my high school education let me down again....
I had a cbr125 with a 20 mile commute each way. $7.50 every 3 days (120 miles)...
Manufacturers: "Chip shortage! The number of vehicles we can produce will be very limited this year."
Carbureted Navi: "Hold my beer. We're about to populate this place like rabbits on Valentine's Day."
NA freeway-based cities, motorcycle license req. for scooters, lack of filtering: I. Think. Not.
It's too bad because nothing would make me happier than to see a whole bunch of new people excited to try out life on two wheels, buzzing around town having fun.
7:03 The engine is a motor. An electric motor is not and engine, but an internal combustion engine is a type of motor, hence the term "motorcycle". It's not an enginecycle, it's a motorcycle. So contrary to internet weenies you can correctly call your engine a "motor" and it's not wrong to say that.
Yeah, kinda weird that Adam said that... especially considering that he doesn't work at Enginecyclist Online.
Yeah, that also triggerd me. Like we cant hear the exhaust note...
@@winteronice thats just sad...
Well motor does sound a bit weak
I just bought the exact Grom you tested. I only ridden it home from Dealership (about 30 miles) highway. But everything you mentioned I did notice. I’m going to use it for work about 15 mile round trip. My last mini was a 1980 Suzuki DS I bought brand new as a teenager. Lol. Thanks for great review!
haha that’s awesome
how are you liking it ? I’m getting one soon
Thinking abt getting a 2023 one soon, how would you recommend as a first bike ?
It's so funny for some reason to watch a serious review of a grom. Not a hater though, love the groms!
Some people say the new grom can go like 85 stock 🤡 maybe if you throw it off a cliff 😂🤦🏻♂️
It does do 85 no problem, but it's 85 km/h not mph, lol.
@@painterboy454 That km/h sounds legit. Miles, yeah, nope on that power.
I’ve seen someone claiming mph.. lol literally said “the new grom is a highway monster” and “it would smoke your second gen grom even with the 186bbk and all the other mods you did”
Probably just another idiot on the internet. There’s never a shortage of those… 😐🤦🏻♂️
@@hellfire08 definitely just an idiot on the Internet. I had somebody swear to me that the new R7 will do 170+, because of European "dyno videos" he's seen. I pointed out to him, in Europe, it'd be in kph, and that dyno speeds aren't true speeds. The dumbass had no reply. No shortage of dumbasses online.
I’ve got a Harley sportster thats old and tired. I’m considering a grom just to ride to work and ride around until I can rebuild my sportster. It looks very fun to ride and fast enough to not get ran over in traffic
Really wanting one now with the 5 speed. But I think I should hold off and see if they make that mint green scrambler grom concept 🤤🤤
Having a hard time deciding between this and a Hayabusa...😏
HA HA HA HA!!!....NOW THAT WAS FUNNY!!!!
It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than it is to ride a fast bike slow...my last bike was a vtx1800...
I literally just bought a grom. My other bike is a modified ZX14r. I'd say... Why not Both? Lol
@Larry House LOL!!!...You're absolutely right! I did in fact buy a Gen3 busa. I still have my eye on getting a grom. The dealerships here in Houston are talking stupid so it's on hold for now.
My dad and I have a couple 2018 Groms for use at the race track and now I want to upgrade just for the new dash alone, ha!
Adam had some coffee today! 1.25x for normal speech
What a cool little motorcycle, rode one a few years ago, super fun! Great review Adam!
I love these videos you make, but that hair... that hair just steals the show 😈
People do not seem to understand that most of the motorcycle community comes from countries that dont speak english as a native language. Slower talking actually makes things alot easier to catch.
Yes thank you!
Change playback speed to 0.75 👍🏼
He speaks pretty slow
@@justhesolution Its better this way so you can change it to 1.25 if youre too speedy
@@A-FrameWedge Maybe it is just because he has to focus on the details while also focusing on other stuff.
I have this Grom. It started making a whining noise around 200 miles. I’m still waiting on Honda on a fix for the problem. I also have a 2019 Grom. The new 22 does much better on the country roads where I live.
I keep hearing people having issues with the new 5 speed like that
Better in which ways on the country roads?
Looks like I should hold out till they work the bugs out. Thats ok that happens with anything new
@@rubberskilla2991 I'm guessing the added 5th gear is much better for top speed cruising.
@@rubberskilla2991 the bike going up any hills maintains higher speeds. I have to slow down and wait for the old Grom to catch up. On average it’s 3-5 mph faster on the same stretch of road. Both bikes are on stock tires. The 19 has a yoshimura full loop exhaust on it. 22 is stock and still much nicer ride overall.
I thought about getting a Monkey but the price was just too close to a duke 200 or husky 401. Now if Honda had a 200 or 250cc for the price they are asking or there about then it would be compelling.
Honda knows exactly how much they can fleece from their customers. Just look at the price of the various new Cubs based on the same 125cc engine
The CB300R is not much more.
I have the same Grom and neutral is tricky. Shifting down from second gear a - appears on the dash. Double clutch it and tap down to first, then up for neutral. It’s my wife’s bike and it freaks her out. I’ve heard others say the same thing.
groms are kinda notorious with this. once they're broken in + oil change, it usually is fine. give it a rev and it should pop in/out of neutral easily
Why did Honda wait so long to get it right? Weird. I own the kymco Spade 150 cc 4 valve efi. 5 speed manual. This is the most powerful minibike and a blast to ride
When people consistently compare their bike to the standard, I’ll take the standard.
I own a super Duke and a 2019 Grom. Grom top
Speed is 50 on a day. I wish I bought the Duke 200 for the same price. More horsepower and 6 speeds
Great to see the back roads instead of the mundane and predictable freeway!
Told myself I would take a shot every time I heard “this motorcycle”. I have died of alcohol poisoning.
The sideshow Bob haircut is epic!
After watching your video, I feel like I really need one of these. Thanks a lot Adam.
"High on oil" is what she ssys everytime I start talkin' about bikes... heheh.
Take a breather from talking when you start it up and rev it.
No direspect
Love the review. Currently owned 803 Ducati Scrambler that I use for commuting to work (52 km daily trips) . I am looking for alternatives bike for this purpose with lower maintenance cost.
Will this be right bike?
I will never call it an engine, it is a motor. It's not an Enginecycle, it's a Motorcycle. Just as they don't call them engine officers. General Motors is not General Engines. It's not Enginesports, it's Motorsports.
1: one that imparts motion specifically
2: any of various power units that develop energy or impart motion: such as
A: a small compact engine
B: INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE especially : a gasoline engine
C: a rotating machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy
Great review. That was a fun ride.
Why is the intro left audio only?
I made a mistake during the edit process. Sorry about that.
Hey, motor is correct for engine. Motor just mean it converts energy into motion or force. Engine is a type of motor that uses fuel. Motors can be hydraulic, electric or internal combustion.
I'd love one as a toy, but they aren't cheap for what they are. I'd take one if it was a 200-250.
I think that is because of the mpgs
My god! That has to be the most boring guy, to listen to 😴😴
I sincerely don't understand the appeal of these mini bikes.
You'd have to ride one in the city to understand.
Not every bike is made for you and thats ok. For me this bike has lower limits and its more fun to hit them and still be under the speed limit. I always say a grom is the most fun you can have under the speed limit
It’s a super scooter
@@c4ljr221 a Burgman 650, C650GT or even AK550 is a 'super scooter'. These are just cramped motorcycles to my eyes.
This displacement could still exist in a larger, more stable motorcycle. I still don't get the appeal. They look and feel like toys. No hate. Just like the previous comment says, it's just not for me.
@@ikeaaron "They look and feel like toys" BINGO. Also, it's an absolute departure from the stuffy pretentiousness that has pervaded through many aspects of 'full-sized' motorcycling culture with people taking themselves way too seriously.
The appeal is that it is FUN
Adam knows his audience and is talking extra slow for this episode
Did you just drive from LA to San Fran?
I commute about 15 miles, with a max speed limit of 45. I have never had a bike, but was considering buying a bike to save money. Is this the ticket ? And as a never ever rider , ABS or no?
One day you are on a Tuono V4 Factory, and the next one on a Honda Grom xD
wait, so they went back to the old style headlight for the 2022? the previous gen looked alot better
Huge respect for you because you stop at stop signs even though nobody is there.👍👍👍👍

Something to commute to work with low fuel consumption: cb125r. Much faster,15HP, 6 speed, bigger, wider wheels and tyres, brakes....
@@relate97 cb125r is not even sold in the US, and as the majority of Earth's population, I don't live in the US either...

I actually want Adam to come to South East Asia and do a Ride Review on a super moped.
I definitely would own one of these if I had small commute.
I like this bike but don't fit it well at 6ft2in. It's interesting to see that my 250 enduro looks twice the size but is the same weight.
I noticed you're not pulling in the clutch when shifting. Will that hurt the clutch or transmission? Great ride. Thanks for the video.
Don’t think so, I used to do that all the time on my old grom. Thing’s a tank.
Up shift only, downshift you need to pull in the clutch, unless of course you have one of those up and down quick shifter, but Upshift is totally fine, just remember to shut off gas when upshifting
really debating on picking up a 2022 for commuting however i dont know if a grom could handle 16 miles one way mountain and valley backroads

.Can't operate on _freeways??_ ..I've never heard of that, what is the limit for engine size to ride a motorcycle on the freeway?
150cc's in many jurisdictions by law.
It's California... They have rules for everything.
Rules were made to be broken.
Speed limit is 65 mph on freeways so this would be dangerous on freeways
@@fatoni698 So true! Everything causes cancer in only California
Great in-depth review. You sound like you're face to face with a completely out of line friend, trying to restrain yourself from stabbing him in the face.
At 3,600 before you go out the door forget it, the R.E. 350 would be a much better deal.
Eeew I hate what they did with the paint and fenders. I am more of a fan of the monkey but I love the styling of the 2018 grom
Eeew I hate the styling of the previous Grom. This brings it a littler closer to its roots with the 1st Gen, which I still think looks by far the best.
Can you still do a rolling stoppie on them with the abs?
Asking the questions we really need answered.
Yes! You can. I can't but since the ABS only prevents the brakes from sliding the tyres it should help stoppies.
@@winteronice I would assume it doesn't have very sophisticated electronics but with roll and pitch sensors it's possible this would be impossible or maybe a setting you can turn on or off. Don't think they have this type of stuff but who knows?

would this is be great option for a first bike? even learning gears for the first time
Yes, its perfect
7:16 Don't let the over-simplifying history rewriting marketing people of the automobile industry bully you or re-purpose words, Motors can be ICE. Until just recently most people said what kind of motor do you have in that thing when talking about an ICE muscle car. Detroit, motor town, wasn't making electric cars for the masses in the 50s and 60s. Sister Christian wasn't motorin' after an all-night charge, her price for flight wasn't waiting 2 hours for a "fast charge". People weren't driving primarily electric cars to the Motor Inns, Motor Lodges, Motor Courts, or Motels. When Cake sang that Satan is my Motor, it was specifically ICE. Motor by Earth Wind & Fire clearly begins with an ICE starting. Finally, nearly all MOTORcycles made in history were not electric.
You must be related to Shell or Exon hahahah Electric cars and bikes were around before ICE…it was the oil companies that lowered prices to undercut the electric producing companies (and I’m talking before the 1900s) and it was that cost difference that made people shift over to ICE. Remember electricity came first and was used for everything from showing animations of muscles twitching in dead bodies to providing light etc. Thanks to the internet it’s easy to see the history of the ICE and it’s relationship with electric power.
I had last gen and really liked it. They are like mopeds but more fun
Same here, great fun little bikes, very cheeky to ride, kinda wish i kept my one....
I'm a bit confused. You said that in the state of Ca. You'll need a motorcycle endorsement to ride it. In the California dmv motorcycle handbook. It states that a class C license is ok for anything under 150cc's. So for those out there reading my comment. I'd like to know what is required to ride one.
Don't know where you read that but it is clear you need an M1 for a motorized two wheel vehicle that can go over 30 mph.
Imagine how short Adam's reviews would be if he didn't... pause... between... every... single... word.
Still love you man.
I prefer that to the monotone of some people

With the smaller wheels, it must be a very bumpy experience
Not at all, Honda seem to have done a good job of balancing the suspension to wheel size
Comfortability? 😁

These little bikes it’s very lethal, because big trucks can simply run you over. Somebody will talk it on the phone while driving, or will change Lane without looking and do you have a ticket to another world. Don’t be tempted by Honda product. This bike for country side only, where is no cars
the high beams being turned on the whole time bothered me more than it should :D

It's a good idea to ride with the high beams lit up on a motorcycle during the day to make you stand out (won't dazzle people in bright daylight anyways).

Would not mind adding a blue one to the fold but I ended up grabbing a couple used tnt135’s for the price of this they are marked way up in Ct. better off grabbing a z125pro for cash off a dealer these just demand too high a price for now
THe Grom needs to be 155cc, more power = more fun.
My 22 SP tops out around 68 with a TST Worx Airbox, Kitaco Super Oil Pump, 60% Clutch Springs and 14 tooth front sprocket. BTW 14T Front Sprocket=Best $10 Mod! I'm 5'11" 260 Pounds and previously 5th was useless on these hilly Ga roads and hitting OHV and Offroading is much better (I'm also running Shinko Mobbers). This is the funnest bike and most customizable I have owned, and if you're looking for speed don't buy this but for the absolute fun this thing excels. It's a blast to go fast on one of these without breaking many speed limits.
You talk like a mother would talk to the school principal about how it's not her kids fault for whatever happened.
Stop making that clapping noise with your mouth for everyone that uses iems/headphones.
7:04 hmm. a lot of people will agree with you, but i do not. if you look up their actual definitions, motor and engine are generic terms. motor can mean anything that moves something, and engine can mean just about anything that does work of ANY kind. it doesn't have to be related to locomotion. google has a search engine. but you wouldn't say search motor because like i said, motor is a generic term, but it's specifically for something that drives physical movement.
so you can call an internal combustion engine, a motor, and be just as correct as calling it an engine. but you would be incorrect to call a catapult a siege motor.
Your not heavy lol, im 6'5" 306 lbs and want a grom but i think learning to ride a motorcycle while right at the payload limit might be a worse idea than just getting a 400 or something.
Motorrrr... glad you caught that correction.
All the fast bikes you have ridden it looks like this would feel like a toy to you.
The design of the gas tank is horrible. Too big, too bulky.
Im here wondering if the 3k debt rn is worth but i want one bad man
WRONG - Sorry but you have it backwards. Engine converts power into motion and a Motor involves internal combustion to promote motion.
Been debating on this and a Duke 200. The grom around me sells for like $800-$1000 less. Is the duke worth the extra almost $1000? The fastest/busiest road I ride is an old highway with speeds of 35-55 throughout, but wouldn't mind something that could hit the highway for just a few exits nothing crazy.
Unless your city is the size of Lego Land,I dont understand these.
And dont say anything about fuel mileage please 😒
If the appeal of a Grom isn't immediately apparent to you, then you'd never understand.
What kind of gloves are those???
His comment that engine refers to internal combustion and motors being electric is funny since the company is called the American Honda Motor Company!
