- For as long has there have been superheroes, fans have argued over who could beat who in a fight. One... thing... I think we can all agree on, however, is that there is one hero that nobody can ever truly beat.

My favorite known fact about the Thing and Doctor Doom: both are featured in the marvel zombies arc where Doom is infected but cannot be controlled by zombification and is only really involved because the infected spread to Latveria. The Thing is later featured as a younger version of himself and helps his companions prevent the infection from spreading to their universe and before leaving the zombie world gets into a fight with the hulk who's a zombie and beats him in one punch and states "I've always wanted to do that."
Being a punching bag isn’t a mutant power.

I think the best example for fictional character that doesn’t give up, is the black knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Will power isn’t a super power.
Green Lantern.
Don't tell that to shonen protagonists.
Green Lantern is DC. Marvel doesn't have any official equivalent to him.
@Kevin Byrnes I think they were referring to the powers. Not just the idea of space cops
Will isn't a power in dc.. it's just a ring that feeds off the will of the wearer.
Will Power is a racing driver
My favorite willpower moment has to be the end of Rock Lee vs Gaara. The concept of perseverance is so engrained in Lee's psyche that his body literally stands back up on a shattered leg with a shattered arm, mind you, WHILE UNCONSCIOUS, and it's not even played for hype. Gai breaks down in tears because he knows he's pushed his student too far and it's beautiful and sad, but also, HOLY SHIT knocking Lee out isn't enough to put him out of a fight. No one never gives up harder than my boi in the green unitard.
My favorite “will power” moment was in Terminator 2. Arnold tears his own arm off to keep fighting, gets his head smashed to bits then impaled with a spike. His eye powers down, he’s done. Latter we see his eye flashing, he re routes power and come back online. The way he grabs that spike and pulls it out as the music swells has always given me chills.
Willpower is considered a power for some superheros. Spider-Man, for example, often has his unbreakable will listed as one of his abilities.
I thought he would have mentioned The Punisher.
Willpower, so would that make Spidey a Green Lantern?
Batman too
It's the best power in fiction to explore. Batman humming a stupid song and buying a triple to deny Dr. Destiny in JL, Ironman knocking out the purple man with a flick of the finger (that being all he could do against him lol), the Cyborg scene he mentioned, and literally every time Spidey lifts something he shouldn't be able to
But his will broke in zombies...

He is the peoples Champion of the universe
I always liked the one in Deep Space Nine, when Worf was in a prison camp run by the Dominion. He was being used as a training tool to teach the Jem'Hadar to fight Klingons. The fight would end when one of the fighters touched a glowing button to signal their defeat. Worf just refused. Eventually the lead Jem'Hadar said "I cannot defeat this Klingon. All I can do is kill him, and that no longer holds my interest."
now I gotta see if the thing fought champion first or if that happened first and if either is a reference to the other
The thing is with Frodo and Sam, Frodo had worn the ring for a long time(even though you get the notion in the movie it has only been a few days...) for years he has worn it through it all and in the end Frodo will is broken by the ring. Sam has worn it (for just a few weeks maybe) but is still strong in willpower then compared to Frodo who since then been a husk of his former self(cause the ring has been eating away at his soul. And dont forget he got stabbed by one of the ring wraiths and he has used it a couple of times). So that's why sam is able to thwart the rings influence at Mount Doom..

I don't know if he really feels any pain from being punched so perhaps fighting against the Hulk is somehow fun.
The hulk hit the thing so hard lumps of rock were smashed off leaving pink muscle underneath

“ How is willpower an actual superpower?”
Green Lantern: Am I a joke to you?
My favorite he won’t go down moment is Randy Marsh vs the Batdad. “I didn’t hear no bell.”
Hobbits aren't necessarily shit, the ring amplifies your greed and ambition. It basically is that devil on the shoulder that tries to manipulate someone into being evil for their ambitions and in doing so reveal themselves to sauron and all that jazz.
But Hobbits are considered ambitious if they decide to move a bit further down the street than is normal, so the ring has nothing to grasp on to.
That's how it was explained to me at least.
I think it's explained that Hobbits are the safest bet, because they are so weak in comparison to other races that all the One Ring can do is extend their lifespan and let them turn invisible. They can obviously still be corrupted by the One Ring, as demonstrated by the fact that Frodo backs out of tossing it into Mount Doom at the last moment because he couldn't bring himself to give it up, but it's a calculated risk
Brutalyte616 on the other hand, merely being in the presence of the ring corrupted some men while Frodo resisted it being next to his chest for the entire journey
Exactly, as Tolkien himself put it once, Hobbits are so gentle and decent of spirit (even the shit ones) that the worst they'd get up to is living alone in a cave eating fish all day.
@Richard Clutterbuck the power of the ring kinda acts like a beacon to Sauron's forces. Also, what I meant is that the ring tries to tempt you more and more towards using it.
I see you also captivated by *Snake Goddess* fascination as well...
If a marvel movie with champion of the university is ever made we now know that the rock if going to be the actor
That's quite a downgrade from the universe.
I love these replies
The best never give up moment is when Rock Lee still gets back up after having the left side of his body crushed.
...and keeps fighting even while being unconscious because his willpowers is just THAT strong
My favourite moment of pure will power, was in Deep Space 9, when Warf was captured by the Dominion. He was forced to keep fighting new opponents until he died. But in the end the strongest opponent said that he could not defeat Warf, only kill him.
The reason Frodo and hobbits in general were special is because unlike the other races the only thing they really wanted was a simple life. All the other races craved power, glory, knowledge, immortality, but the hobbits were perfectly content in their shire.
Think of it this way Gandalf one of the most powerful beings in the lord of the rings universe couldn’t allow himself to even touch the ring. It had the power to corrupt even him.
Gollum carries it while the ring was content to lay asleep biding its time. When Bilbo carries it the ring is still waiting for his masters call. But when Frodo carries it the ring is using all of its might and will to corrupt Frodo and to slow him down. Making itself heavier like a lead weight around his neck. For the brief time Sam held it he couldn’t believe how heavy it was. Sam was also special as only one of two beings to ever posses the ring and willingly give it up. But Frodo bore the full brunt of the rings power for the longest time. The movies tried very hard to convey how hard of a time he was having resisting the ring. Suffices to say that of all the characters in the story he was the only one that directly fought with Sauron for I think it was 2 years straight.
Dwarves are right there too actually, when the other 19 rings than the one were given to (Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die) the humans were easily corrupted by the rings, and the elves didn't really wear them because the elves Celebribor gave them to were known for their wisdom, but the Dwarven lords wore them, but were mostly unaffected for centuries thanks to their incredible stubbornness. I mean, Thrór's eventual obsessive greed for treasure was probably caused by the corruption but I think that was the extent of it.

Yea, surprisingly a lot alike. May depend on screen size, results may vary.
That's because the rock is the champion of the universe

But since she was considered a bit of a joke character I understood. But that's pretty cool to know who can't actually be beat! Thanks
KiniroKitsune there’s a graffiti novel of her (well actually, her clone) beating every marvel character.
Squirrel Girl Just is so annoying.
She is unbeatable. She's also full of that great will and never give up quality. Also, if she can't smash it she can use empathy and psychology to get the foe to decide to end their rampage.
@@100CurlyWurly doesn't really mean anything, deadpool and the punisher had multiple comic lines where they killed every super hero/villain in existence

I am 50 years old. I remember reading that comic book with the Champion of the Universe when I was 13 and I openly wept at Ben's force of will. Thank you for reminding me of that great story.
Some of my favorite "surpass your limits" moments come from Black Clover, theres a character named Yami and that's just kind of his thing. Hes always saying things like "I guess I'll have to surpass my limits, right now" and then cuts through dimensions with his katana in a magic show
There are several moments when the Thing's willpower "powered" him through a desperate situation where others' would have fallen. Way back in the 1960's in FF # 40 in his epic battle against Dr. Doom where he crushed Doom's hands is one great example. FF # 298 where he withstood the attack of this crazy alien dude named Umbra and then cleaned his clock is another one. FF #355 is an often forgotten moment where Benjy defeated a high powered Wrecker who was tearing up Yancy Street. And...in the very recent FF # 7, written by Dan Slott, the Thing actually survives a full-on blast by Galactus himself through shear force of will! The Thing is really under appreciated and I hope Dan Slott continues to give him the respect he deserves in the newly rebooted Fantastic Four comic.

There is actually a great real-life example.
When George Foreman was young, he flew up the boxing rankings by crushing everyone he fought.
People argued about whether he had the hardest punch in boxing history.
Ali watched a fight with Howard Cosell and told Cosell he could see a way to beat Foreman.
What was the way?
Ali protected his head and let Foreman bust up his body so badly Ali was peeing blood afterward.
But late in the fight Foreman hit Ali hard in the head.
Ali trash-talked him. “That’s it? That’s all you got?”
George said years later that on the inside he was shrugging and thinking, “Yeah, that’s it.”
Foreman weakened, and Ali knocked him out.
I have rewatched that fight in recent years, and I cringe at the shots to the ribs and gut that Ali absorbed. Brutal.

My favorite moment of "I could do this all day" is from the new season of The Punisher on Netflix. I believe it's either the last episode or second to last, when John Pilgrim and Frank are fighting and beating the shit out of each other, and they both are slow to get up, grab their weapons, Frank says "Need a minute?" Pilgrim replies "I was waitin' on you." I think Punisher is a pretty good example of willpower being a tangible superpower in the Marvel universe, because other than his training in the military the only thing that keeps him kicking ass is his willpower to annihilate, no matter how beaten and bloody he is.

I absolutely love when Spider-man in the Spectacular Spider-man series was caught under laboratory parts and he was about to give up until he remembered Gwen was unconscious next to him, so he just summons the will power to push beyond his physical limits to the point where his costume was tearing apart from his own manliness.
He had gone one-on-one with an Elder of the universe (Champion), beaten to a pulp, sent. To the hospital, and left a trail of blood behind him as he crawled back into the fight.
