Just wanna say man, i found your music and Surfaces last year at a very shitty time in my life. I went through a pretty awful breakup with a girl I had spent the past two years of my life devoting myself to. I had lost over 20 lbs. Failed all my classes last semester wasting thousands of dollars. I had extremely bad anxiety day and night, and my insomnia was the worst itd been since Highschool. At one point I had sunken so low that I almost drove into oncoming traffic, and this is coming from someone who never even contemplated suicide once, it was hardly even part of my vocabulary. I spent my 21st birthday basically depressed and alone. All my friends were out of town at different colleges, and I no longer had my girlfriend/best friend anymore. Looking back at pictures of myself at the time genuinely scares me...I looked absolutely awful. My coworkers noticed at work too, and of course so did my family. I remember stepping on the scale and seeing 123.6 lbs, which for a male standing 5'10 is extremely thin and unhealthy. My ex had sort of made my life a living hell, and I wont go into details about how but she had put me in a situation that was nearly impossible for me to see a way out of. I also remember discovering Surfaces and your solo music for the very first time. It was around the time i had hit my lowest, and it seemed to be exactly what i needed. My friends were coming back to town shortly after that, and I was dying to show them your stuff. Rainbows reminded me that pain is one of the greatest teachers on the planet. "If we didnt get no rain, then we wouldnt get no rainbows." Just Chill told me quite literally to just chill. Chill the fuck out. Relax man. Its not the end of the world. You're a good guy, you have awesome friends and family. You're smart, young, have a great job and a great future ahead of you, dont stress over a girl who threw you in the dumpster and took you for granted and DO NOT get jaded by one female, theres so many beautiful girls out there in body and mind who would be happy to have you. Why Not Me told me that I deserve to be happy and I will do whatever i can to make it so. As soon as that sexy saxophone solo slapped me across the face it even brought me back to a time when i used to play Alto and Tenor in school and in jazz band. This next part might seem stupid to some, but your name brings a small comfort as well. I have two older siblings who im very close to, a brother and a sister. My brothers name is Forrest, and just seeing your name in my queue of songs would bring a smile based on that fact alone. I guess what im trying to say is thank you. Thank you for making your art. Thank you for sharing it with me and hopefully the thousands of others who will discover it. Im not going to be that dramatic and say it "saved me" but I think what it actually did is equally as inspiring. Im not sure if you're going to read this but thank you dude. Man, I used to listen to this way back when I was in highschool. Every morning in the taxi on the way from my house, to the others and eventually school. I grew up in a Christian household and even then I didn't realise the hints of Christianity in some of your earlier songs, I was just enjoying the music. It's been almost 4 years that i'm out of highschool now, nearing the end of my degree and A LOT has happened since the era when I used to listen to these songs. When you released Lift my hands, I was like wait I know that voice!!! Connected the dots and became so overjoyed. Then I started listening to your older music again, and realised how often Christianity was actually presented in your songs back then. I'm so grateful to the Lord. I'm definitely closer to Him now than I was back then, but I'm so grateful that even during a time I wasn't actively seeking Him, He was still there pushing me in the right direction. I’m a really emotional person so if I feel a little sad, I start crying sand if I feel a little mad, I also start crying.
