it’s a greek myth story, basically orpheus goes down to hell to rescue eurydice. and they’re allowed out but the one condition is that orpheus walks ahead and does not look back until they are both out of hell. it ends with orpheus looking back in the last little bit (lots of theories as to why/what exactly happened) and eurydice is lost back to hell forever, and they’re separated (thus why edwin says it ends tragically) but you can see the parallels between the two and these two :) which is so amazing
It’s a story from Greek mythology, it’s a beautiful read, though Edwin is right, it truly does end in tragedy. The plot goes like this; Orpheus was an extremely talented musician, him playing on the lyre could rival gods. But more importantly Orpheus and Eurydice were completely and utterly in love, and were to be married. At the wedding the god who was blessing the marriage told them that this perfection and happiness would not last. One day Eurydice was dancing with nymphs in the forest, and tragically and randomly she was bitten by a snake and died instantly, the mourning song Orpheus played was so powerful it moved all creatures to emotion even gods, so the gods blessed him to go to the underworld to go see her. Even the creatures in the underworld felt his song and left him alone to reach the King and Queen of the underworld, Hades and Persephone. Orpheus gave a full rendition of his song for Eurydice, to the King of the dead, Hades was so moved he gave this young couple a single chance to be together, to walk out of the underworld with Eurydice being alive again. The catch, she would not be alive until they walked into the human realm again, stuck as a shade, basically a soundless shadow, until then and more importantly Orpheus was told that he could not look at Eurydice until they were out of the underworld. So Orpheus started the long climb out of the underworld, but with her making no sound and the fact he could not look at her he started to loose faith that she was really behind him, the gods are known for their lies, that he was leaving the underworld by himself and didn’t even get to talk to her. He had could even see the exit to the human realm but he had to know, he could not let his heart be broken by leaving this place alone, her couldn’t leave her alone in this place. So Orpheus looked back, and he saw her, one glorious moment they saw each other and then she was dragged back into the bowels of the underworld, as he broke his end of the deal. Orpheus was bared from coming back to the underworld as the living have no right to be there. How Orpheus dies changes with each retelling, Zeus might have smote him for his lack of faith in the gods/knowing to much, Orpheus might have thrown himself into a river and was torn apart by nymphs. Either way he dies never to see Eurydice ever again, his head remained whole as it continued to sing his morning song, continuing to affect people about this tragedy even after his death. The muses so moved by his music they cast his lyre to the sky to be a constellation, forever watching over and reminding people to this story.
