My mum was a child during the war and experienced rationing. She was a talented artist and entered a competition in our home town. The first prize was a banana. It's hard to imagine these days how rare and coveted a banana was during the war years. She won the banana and shared it with her younger brother and sister. That was the only banana they had for the entire six years of the war. She died in 2014 and I miss her. It's odd how many things remind me of her.
Great video from you .. proud of our Red Arrows only been based a few miles north of my home in Lincoln. Due to go to America this year.. great to remember those who gave their future for our freedom LEST WE FORGET.. Thank you ..
Well said Felipe. You seem as proud as us natives. Thank you for appreciation and knowledge of what we went through to secure our freedom. This is your land now and your family is a credit to us all. Peace. XXXXX
One of my retired fellow flying instructors was in the navy, north Atlantic and D-day. He was part of the commemorations aboard the boat that sailed to France. Two weeks after his return he passed away at age 93. RIP Ron, he never told us about his past.
Great video Felipe and family,we should all be very grateful to all those who gave so much at that momentous time, hope it will never have to be repeated.BTW love your girls name ,same as my long passed mother
My husband's late uncle got the Navy Cross for commanding the first LCT Scout Boats which landed US tanks under heavy fire on Omaha Beach. He broke radio silence by relaying information to an army captain resulting in a last-minute change which aided in the success of the attack that saved the lives of many servicemen. He never spoke of this heroic feat until he was recognized at the 50th anniversary of D-Day celebrations.
I know exactly where I was when we had news of the D-Day Landings. I was in the playground of my primary school in SE London and an older boy said something like this - "T have some news - the Allies have invaded France" we knew it was not the end and I suppose we just thought we'd wait and see. I was only about 7 or 8 - we knew all about the bombing but we accepted it as the normal state of affairs. After a raid we would go down to Lewisham High Street and look at the damage and see if we could collect bits of shrapnel.
At the end of August you need to get yourselves along to the GDSF (Great Dorset Steam Fair) at Tarrant Hinton, Dorset (next door tp Hampshire), the kids will love it!
Great video! My dad is also an engineer and an officer in the U.S. Navy. Some of his service was spent on the team that helped transition the BAE Systems Hawk (a British land-based trainer) into the T-45 Goshawk (a land and carrier trainer). He sometimes communicated and worked alongside British engineers; and, they earned much respect from my dad and his team. As a military brat, I've always felt an admiration for the history and sense of patriotism in regard to the U.S. and our allies. I would love to have attended the D-Day 75 Celebrations! Have you watched They Shall Not Grow Old yet? It's a documentary about the First World War from Peter Jackson (director of The Lord of the Rings films). The film is deeply moving. We know quite a bit about WW2 because of advances in film and sound. WW1 is still something of a mystery to many people. So, Jackson restored old silent footage from WW1. He used a unique set of techniques to time, colorize and stabilize the images. He also hired expert lip-readers to transcribe what soldiers were saying in these silent films. He then hired voice actors -- from the same locations as those troops -- to bring those words alive. He even hired musicians to figure out the tunes that were being played in some of the films and recreate it for the documentary. *EDIT - Here's the trailer: ua-cam.com/video/IrabKK9Bhds/v-deo.html
A great day to commemorate the sacrifice of so many young lives of the allied forces. England, America and its allies paid an ENORMOUS price for victory... and the ripples of it are still felt today. Even generations later it's still poignant and raw because of the scale of losses. Freedom is paid for with young blood, and so much of it soaked the beaches at Normandy. God bless them all.
Hope you enjoyed your visit to my hometown. A very proud moment for our city. Maritime history and in particular naval history is very much woven in to our DNA. There were a few protests in the guildhall square but most people in the city demanded that they were kept away from the D-Day celebrations so the focus wasn’t taken away from remembering our veterans
Hi Guys. Thanks for another great video. The park and ride idea is always one to bear in mind in order to save time and parking fees. this was especially the case for my wife and me when visiting Venice. it looks as if Normandy is going to be the place to be in 2024 for the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings. plus then on to Paris for The Olympics, and "hopefully" the inaugauration of the renovated Notre Dame Cathedral.
A grand vlog folks. We should never forget how much we owe those people that died for us or who risked all for us back then. Please come to the Duxford Air Museum near Cambridge! If you google their website for more information! They tanks, planes from basically all sides in both World Wars, they do special air displays too where The Red Arrows take part and The Red Devils. Spifires, Hurricanes, Mezersmitz, Lancasters, B52's etc are known to fly in their air displays! Please try and come sometime to their events and Museum, you wont be disappointed. Biggest collection in the world!
Hi guys, Felipe I have to say thank you to you because of all the good things you've said about this country and the fact you seem to care about the UK more than a lot of brit's do. Lillian, you have such a beautiful voice have you ever thought about becoming an opera singer when you were younger. guys this question goes out to you both, have you ever considered putting your children through the British school system as always thank you and keep up with your great video's, best wishes from Karl Mcgowan...
Very much enjoyed your vlog. I have been to the US a few times and yes they are very patriotic to the point of being nationalistic. We Brits. don't fly the flag from our houses or treat the Prime Minister as a sacred being. Maybe its our reserve, but we will fight to the end to protect the country if it is threatened. Fish and chips forever and God save the Queen.
I had a grandfather, who was rescued from Dunkirk in 1940. He was an army reservist, and subsequently billeted to a home in Taunton. It must have been a very dark time.
God bless all those brave Allied soldiers who faced up to the Nazis and gave their lives for our freedom today. It"s great that you guys do what you do and understand our British way of doing things. We will never forget how our friends and allies came from around the world to our aid. We could not have stopped the Nazis without them.
Phil. This is by most my favourite vlog from your lovely family.. (your wife can sing a bit too 👌🏻) it makes my heart sink that if I mention immigrant, it makes me feel far right..My heart is uplifted by your journey from beginning untill now. As of both immigrant background to America, but then to England, I love it How you've embraced (if from a deliberate vlog, which I don't believe, you're too genuine) british values and from your vlogs actually makes me proud that in today's political correctness an Asian and South American Americans can make me feel so proud of the country we live in. I'm sorry if this seems a rambling far right thing. But thankyou for choosing this tiny country to live in.. Im truly thankful for your family reinforcing my belief that britian is great... All my best wishes.❤️
One patriotic Tune you have left out and should be sung by your wife is by a English composer is by Elgar Land of Hope and Glory and is played on the last night of the Prom , Albert Hall. Its enough to make the hairs stand on end on your chest wonderful you cant get more British than that music.
I was there too and got some footage of the red arrows. Great day out. PS did you notice the arrow of the heart failed to appear! I guess the plane's smoke machine packed up.
Hi I live in Portsmouth and yes there were many protesters against trump, you wouldn’t have seen them as they were not allowed anywhere near the site of the celebrations, they were all outside the City’s Guildhall, so yes they were were protesters. Anywhere trump goes in this country there are protesters.
Enjoyed your video and coming to the town I live in. Its a shame that more people weren't out with flags and making a point on this special occasion. The people, (at least what I've seen in Portsmouth), only seem to get their flags out for soccer matches (I hate soccer myself). I went to America for the first last time last year and saw American flags on many buildings. Why can't we do that here? The event itself went very well though and Trump's helicopter flew over my head in the morning which I though was quite cool. Having so many politicians coming to Portsmouth from around the world was quiet a special event here which I think went well. Thanks for posting and I'm glad that you came down for the day :-)
I'm very jealous that you managed to make it to that, I wanted to go myself. Neither of my grandparents took part in D day (on foot at least) but I guess they were somewhere supporting it. I know one of my grandparents was in the Asian theatre at the time, stationed in India. Its a real shame how necessary D day and all the operations like it were for the number of lives it cost to gain a little bit of ground. It's important to remember what it cost, and coupled with the centenary of the end of WWI last year there's never been a better opportunity to remember and learn
Hi Phi&Lil never mind about missing Queenie-poos at least you had a good day out, personally I 'never seen Queenie-poos live in the last 80 year's of my life.
