Profiting off of the works of an author condemned as all of the worst attributes mankind can muster is the bread and butter of RPG companies who continue to flog HP Lovecraft while milking the Mythos for every cheap sourcebook they can.
The supreme cringelords at Evil Hat have released many Cthulhu mythos books while calling Lovecraft a racist. They're happy to steal his work while taking a dump on him. Pathetic people.
The timing of this is incredible. I had this book on hold at my local library for 3 weeks and it finally became available on Friday. I'm planning to read a bulk of it this week and am planning to do my own video review of it. It's a beast of a book so my review may also be in multiple parts. Thanks for this video and thanks to your viewer, Thoth-Amon (sp?) who gifted it to you! As a fellow DungeonTuber I'm happy to support your content and channel. Keep up the awesome work! Peace.
5:18 Thank you for bringing up JRPGS. They get really weird in some games: you fight not only gods from many pantheons, but Jungian archetypes and the Demiurge. A couple of games have been facing off against God/JHVH, as well. Occasionally you hear stories of people from the U.S. trying to flex on Japanese creators artistic decisions. Can we make art and have free speech or not? Do people even understand what imagination and metaphors are?
The language used in this book sounds eerily similar to the same arguments used to discredit D&D during the 80's satanic panic. They argue that players will be inspired to emulate the attitudes and behaviors of the characters in the game, causing degradation of the player's morality or ethics. Nothing could be further from the truth!
I think the best thing we can do is just run the game we want to run at home. And not worry about what other people are doing. I'm interested to hear you discussing the Bible, I've been mulling over how to incorporate it in my home game without seeming gimmicky.
I am glad I didn't buy this. Jon Peterson sold us out and it makes me sad. Playing at the World has this garbage too now and it makes me sad. I was so excited for his work, but he has ruined his work.
I've known this about him for a long time. We both have access to some older documents. And those documents paint a very specific picture, which goes against his narrative. So he doesn't bring them up. In the online community when I brought them up, I was told they were fake because otherwise he would have included them. He's the very worst type of historian, the one who hides history he politicaly disagrees with
I waited for Amazon got a used copy before i bought it. Mainly because of that crap in the front. I refuse to give money to people who openly hate me. I haven't really dug into it yet, but I will as I'm very interested in early version of the games i love.
I can respect those who bow out of the culture war, and understand why they're sick of it. It's tiring. But it's still something we need to win and something that is very important. Just remember, if the other side wins they'll eviscerate our hobbies and infect them with their ideology and everything downstream of that, they've proven their intent and desire multiple times over. The culture war is only a war because people pushed back, if no one did the progressives would have had a complete victory years ago. It would have been a culture revolution, which is what they wanted... and never got. That being said, simply not putting up with their BS and ignoring them can go quite far, since they crave attention and validation. Not everything has to be some drawn out 'culture brawl', and at the end of the day people (me included) no doubt come here for hobby stuff, not culture war stuff. That being said, another good video.
I don't have a copy of that myself, but some of the outdoor survival is in the book, actually. You can piece together what Arneson was doing by looking at that.
I’m thinking about buying a copy and cutting out that bullshit preface with a pair of scissors and tagging a WOTC in a post with a picture after I’m done. Problem solved. Seems like a pretty cool book despite the revisionism.
There is a brief reference in one of the drafts - and in Arneson’s later First Fantasy Campaign. What is noticeable is that Gary Gygax chose to cut it out of the published version, something you would expect Mr Peterson to notice in his introduction.
Wait people are upset because they apologise for things people now see as bad. Sorry but I think yay good for them. But if you think all this was bad to. Bye see ya
"culture war ... I dont care ... im not interested" - spends almost half the video talking about a boiler plate 'old language is old' statement at the start of the book.

@@TheBasicExpert No, it's obscene...
Really interesting tome. I'm looking forward to more of this series
+10 xp for editorial and formatting excellence.
I hate it when vids like these end. Can't wait for more TBE!

I still might buy a copy. Once it goes on sale at Ollie's.

Haven’t bought a WOTC product since 2017, and don’t miss it.
Pumped about the hardcopies for Atomic Punk.

False accusations from intellectually challenged children, thats what i think of those opening statements.

@frogknightgames that checks out. Would you please scan what you have and share it with us somehow.

Can you review Avalon Hill Outdoor Survival Guild? I'm curious about how exploration was handled back in the day.

Wow, I don’t recall reading about slavery in the little brown books. What load of poop!
