Gearbox Oil Change - Renault Clio

- Changing the gearbox oil on a 2002 Renault clio 1.2 16v, with a 5 speed manual gearbox.
The car has 70,000 miles and i thought it was a good time to change the oil, it has been crunching when going into 3rd gear for some time.
However even with the oil changed the gears still crunch when going into 3rd, this happens if accelerating hard and going from 2nd to 3rd, or no matter how gently the car is going from 4th to 3rd.
The clutch also seems like its on its way out. - Авто та транспорт
Hvala ti brate, pozdrav iz Srbije!
I have reno clio you help me , you or a grate man, tanks for oll videos, Serbia
love you!! sory for my english.
Great to hear the videos are helping, thanks for the comment
Thanks for the comment
As for the axle stands at the time i had a cheap lidl jack i went round each corner, jacked the car up, put the axle stand in and lowered the car onto the axle stand. Just make sure all of the axle stands are sitting level on the ground and they are holding up a strong part of the car.
I cant remember if the clutch is cable or hydraulic on the clio, i think its cable operated. Get someone to press the clutch pedal while you look at the engine bay at the gearbox below the battery you will be able to see the clutch arm moving, if its cable operated the cable sits on top of the arm and there possibly is a way to tension it. But normally when the clutches start to slip the clutch itself is worn out and needs to be replaced.
This was exactly what i needed, thanks for making this!
What type of oil is used and where
could I get it?
Very useful video , greetings from Mexico!!
Thanks for the comment, greetings from Ireland
Yep it sounds like the clutch is just worn out, replacement clutches are not too expensive for the clio, the clutch is slipping on this clio, but its not too bad just yet.
make sure to press the glutch in max then change gear carefully will not tear so much then if u force it into gear.
Where is this located for Renault Clio 2 phase 1??
hi , i got the same car runs fine, but the gear stick is bit wobbly especially when i drive in law gears its bit wobbly. why is that?? and my clutch biting point is too high, do i need repair or os ot ok...??? please give some advice.. thanks
The dealer would have the recommended fluid which is probably best for renault auto boxes.
Although i got the oil for this car from my local motor factors, i tell them the car, year, engine etc and they check a book for the correct oil
I checked the arm the last time i was under the clio and there was indeed quite a bit of play and slop in the linkage so it probably could do with replacement.
I never found one on mine, looked everywhere, in the tank, under the front wing (just a charcoal filter) and around the engine bay.
I was told that some clios never actually got a fuel filter, and it certainly seems the case with mine.
I have a question, how much liter transmissionoil did you add?
Hi there,
I will refer back to @ in the video
3.4 litres of oil was required for this gearbox, generally fill it until oil starts to pour out through the filler hole then reinstall the filler bolt.
75w80 GL5 (4L needed) THIS IS THE OIL FOR THE 1.2 16V
Hello me again! Is the filler plug on the top ( tube poking out )And what Oil do u reccomend ? 1.2 16v manual
Fantastic videos dude. Thanks!
(Wondered; how do you get it up on 4 axle stands safely?)
It bops up and down, down when revving, up when slowing down? I think it has something to do with the dogbone engine mount and too much movement.
I having said that this clio is the same, so is every one ive drove, and there is no visible wear on the dogbone mount.
However any 1.5 DCI clio ive drove seems to be slightly better, but overall clios dont seem to have a nice gear change.
If the biting point is high, the clutch could be worn, put it in 5th and take off does it stall if you do this?
A 8mm Door handle works well 2
Hi there
Today I gave my Clio a Gearbox oil change. Since it's been running much smoother & shifting is a lot smoother. Just one thing I was wondering you could advise on- when replacing the gearbox cover that you remove to access the Sump, there was a sharp ended spring type thing that to me seemed as though it either shouldn't be there or is there to apply downwards pressure on the cover to keep it in place. Does your Clio have this? Only it made it quite difficult to get the cover back on and due to it being so "in the way" and sharp ended I just can't imagine it's supposed to be there.
The only thing i can think of is a bit of black plastic that covered the gear linkages from dirt and muck. It felt a bit springy when i tried to push it back on and needed a bit of a push before it clicked back into place. Unfortunately i don't have the clio anymore so i can't check under it to see what the part is.
You probably dont care but if you guys are bored like me atm then you can watch all the new movies and series on Instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my girlfriend during the lockdown xD
@Kristian Julian yea, have been using Instaflixxer for years myself :D
Brill, I thought that tube was the filler too, I'll do it properly now.
excelentes videos tutoriales..gracias
It's a cable clutch and it can change gear by barely pressing the pedal, think it's just time for a replacement! Thanks for the help :)
I have a Renault Clio 1,2 benzine 2001 but I don't know where is the filter
@peugeotCitroen2CV grate vid man does the Clio have a filter and how much and what fluid should I use thanks
Hello mani have a small crack in my oil thing there u remove the planel protection from. is there any powder or glue that cna fill this ? it doesnt leak much just got told to soon change by the clio garage. i quess sawdust doesnt work with glue here xD on metal but clean it and superglue ?
If a Renault espace car does not select while driving, despite change d fluid . what need to do?
I just bought a cute peugeot 206 year 2000, like to know how many liter of atf fliud for auto tranmision. &the engine tq.
peugeotCitroen2CV hello!!! Do you know where is the fuel filter on this car? (Renault Clio 1.2 16V)???
I couldnt find mine in the Renault Megane seven seater.?
what type of gearbox oil can be used for the 1.4 renault lucrecia
top man thanks for that ! for a cleo ...
+Giuseppe Giannotta Thanks for the comment.
I got them from my local motor factors, the dealer, or ebay also would be ok
Take out the filler plug first (if it won't, you find this out before you drain the oil out!) :-)
+paul60163 Good tip thanks
Now I know where the oil filler is..sorry a freewheeling ramp needed, am too old for working on my back.
Dont blame you a bit, i have a 2 post lift now and wouldn't go back to crawling on the floor.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV Years ago where I lived you could RENT a bay with a Ramp oil drainers special tools if needed £20 for the day..
I'm sorry but I don't see in this video where are you change the filter …
He's changing the gearbox oil, there is no filter.
thank you very much...!!!
Anywhere you'd recommend buying a set copper washers from?
How do u do that in automatic gear box
It will be a bit different, i havent changed too many automatic transmission fluids before. Once on a saxo.
Best thing to do is buy a haynes manual, there are also some mechanics that have a specific device for flushing automatic transmission fluid. Generally they dont flush out too well from the drain plug alone as there is still oil in other places including the torque converter. These machines are designed to ensure it gets a full flush.
Hi, do you know automatic gear for 406? How to close the cap( With a dipstick ) which is under the airfilter after refill gearbox oil ?
+hung po ip I do not know very much about the automatic gearbox in the 406, unfortunatley i have only drove or worked on manual ones. The automatic gearbox on the 305 has a dipstick which seems to use friction alone (as with most dipsticks) to hold it in the closed state. Sorry i cant be of any help. 406oc may have more information regarding this, or if the car is a V6 the coupe club.
Hey just wondering what is the black pipe where you almost filled from as I thought that was where you filled it also.
That is the gearbox ventilation tube
Hi, the Drain plug key, is it the same as the key used to drain the engine oil? many thanks
+Tony Allenby I cant actually remember, i think so, Peugeot definatley use the same key type on the sump and gearbox drain plugs, i think Renault were the same. (I sold the clio in November 2013 and have not been working on any since that time)
However buy a set of drain plug keys. This is the one i have:

Its a good set that laser one, havent found it to be missing any type of key yet.
Or just get a funnel with a flexible hose.. the tip of it fits right in the hole.. did yesterday and filled straight from a 5l bottle.. obvs didn't put it all in.
I seen one in the motor factors recently, a funnel with screw on flexible hose did seem to be very convenient for awkward to fill gearboxes.
Is this same on a Kangoo please?
Possibly, if its a 1.2 16v petrol it might use the same gearbox, i have never worked on a Kangoo
what type of gearbox oil must i use on the renault LUTECIA..its automatique
+Baakanyi Pebe
Im not sure, is the Lutecia a Japanese spec clio?
I would recommend looking up in the manual, or asking on the renault forums, i would say its some form of ATF (automatic transmission fluid) but best to check if there is any specific requirement for that gearbox.
Hi I was wondering if this is the same process on a dci? Bought a 2005 dci rush and going into 3rd is sometimes a bit iffy and most gears are a bit iffy when it's cold (fine when warmed up) . Looking to do a gearbox oil change next weekend. Never done it before but looks simple enough, just wondering if everything is in a similar place as this clio. Cheers!
The filler should be in the same region as the petrol clio, although i would advise checking what grade of oil the diesel gearbox uses i don't know for sure if there is a difference in the gearbox in the petrol and diesel.
Brilliant cheers, apparently my gearbox needs tranself 75w80 which would set me back nearly 40 quid. At my local motor factors today there was a carlube 75w90 that said it can be used in 75w80 Renault gearboxes that's only 21 quid for 5 litres.. Unsure what to do!
If you have a good motor factors with knowledgeable staff then that advice should be reliable, however it may also be worth checking on renault forums to see what other people use in their DCI engined clios gearboxes.
Also if you have determined what grade of oil you need try shopping around for it, eurocarparts occasionally do good deals, halfords, other motor factors etc may have the 75w80 at a better price.
Brilliant, thanks for your help!
what type of oil and how many liters?
Hi there, i had to watch the video back there myself to be able to answer these questions, been a while since i had this clio.
At 3:21, 3.4 litres of oil was required for this gearbox, generally fill it until oil starts to pour out through the filler hole then reinstall the filler bolt.
The bottle of oil appears at 3:32 to 3:38 and was 75w90 gearbox oil
@@peugeotCitroen2CV Thnak You very much from Czech Republic :)
@@pavelliska8129 No problem at all glad to help, Lovely country by the way was there about 5-6 years ago, Prague was beautiful.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV Yes, in Prague is still safe and clean. Not "no go zones"
@peugeotCitroen2CV Hi, my clio 1.2 2003 petrol is slipping with the clutch 98,000 miles, does it have clutch fluid somewhere in a cylinder?, can it be low and thats why its slipping or does it only have a cable type system and needs a new clutch, thanks
+SP330Y
If i recall correctly the 1.2 16v manuals have a cable operated clutch, and generally slipping is the friction plate so you would need to get a new clutch. The kits cost about £40-50 for the 1.2 16v
peugeotCitroen2CV
Thanks found one on fleabay for £50, are they easy to fit, or do you have a link to a video of how to replace one?
somebody told me i need it up on garage ramps like in a mot place to change the clutch, i have 2 large ramps and 2 x jacks, will this do
+SP330Y
Easy enough to fit, getting the gearbox off the engine and back on again is the hardest part, the rest is just remembering where everything goes. A haynes manual is your best friend there.
I have no videos on a clios clutch, ive done a 106, 406 and Subaru Forester clutch.
You can do the clutch with axle stands (the front wheels will be off ramps are not of much use, and jacks are unsafe to get under a car unless there is a support ie axle stand) i think the subframe might need dropped on a clio to get a the gearbox hence why a lift would be handier.
peugeotCitroen2CV
thanks,a forklift truck would be very handy too :(
+SP330Y
Haha ah they have their uses more chance of doing damage with a forklift to the the underside, and still would need axle stands i wouldn't get under a car just supported by the rams of a forklift.
hello
I need pictures for citroen gearbox automatic c5 v6 2002
abut oil fill level check pluq and drain pluq. plz
I dont have any pictures or information on a c5, i would suggest joining an owners club/forum for the C5 to find this out.
ok thnx
Is there any way to stop the crunching when going in to third' mine does it as well. Also hard to put into first ?
Mine just crunched when going into 3rd i think it was just wear in the gearbox, but after tightening up the mount it helped but the crunch was still there. As for first id check the various linkages going to the gearbox to see if there is any wear or play in them
peugeotCitroen2CV Is the gearbox drain plug & the oil sump pan plug the same? What are the dimensions of the gearbox drain plug? & Is the one in the video the same as the one on the 1.4? I have a 2003 1.4 16v model & want to get a sight glass plug for it... Thanks...
Marvin Connell As far as i recall they used the same removal key to loosen them but i cant actually remember if they were the same or the dimensions of the plug its been about 2 years since i sold this clio
peugeotCitroen2CV Ok... What about gearbox oil change intervals - I bought mine second hand without manuals & haven't found one with the data I need online yet... I've been using(way too thick)Mobil-1 75W90 & I'm hearing a sort of grinding\gear noise of late, hence my gearbox oil change research...
Marvin Connell Im not sure about the interval i sold my clio with all of that literature, renault forums would be the place to go to get advice regarding the interval and best type of oil for the gearbox.
If the car has passed 100,000 miles or 10 years, then its a good time to change the oil. Especially if there is no service history with it.
oil was worn, should not be black
you forget too show were is the filter
There isn't one
Io so che ne vanno solamente 2lt
What types of oil you used??
Whatever my local motor factors recommends based on the cars registration.
I can see at 3:32 i have used 75W-90 in this car.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV how much liter? 2L?
@@josephjacobi5413 i shall refer to 3:23 in the video.
ffs take your dirty gloves off before you drive my clio! I hate it when mechanics do that.
The car featured in this particular video was in fact my clio, not your clio. You are free to drive your own car how you wish, if you dont mind i drive mine in whatever way i like :)
Also take a close look at the gloves, they were not filthy i had changed them.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV Ahh, than it's ok, I thought that was my clio.
Hi was wondering if it was possible to adjust a 2001 clio clutch cable as my clutch is starting to slip, if so, how do u do it?? Help if u can!!
