❤😊 I think part of their strength is that fact that the middle trio, Kirsten, Scott and Mitch have been singing together since high school. About year later they auditioned for a TV singing competition for acapella groups. They needed at least five people so through a mutual friend they gained their bass, Avi. Avi was the bass in Hallelujah and when he left in 2017 he was replaced by Matt, the bass singer in this video. Scott found Kevin, their beatboxer extraordinaire online. Kevin had posted a video doing what he calls cello-boxing. Kevin arrived 24 hrs before the groups audition for the show!! There are 12 episodes and it is so worth the ride!!! You are taken by them from the first performance on the show!! And now they have over 200 songs in their catalog!! Originals, covers/upgrades as we like to call them and a ton of Christmas music!! They also are currently on a US tour and just dropped a new original about a week ago, so they are still far from done!!! I highly recommend watching the Sing Off series first, so you can see how they started and they that they have had it since day one!!! FYI, the aforementioned change in bass singer is the only change in people. Kirsten (or Kirsty, like thirsty) and Mitch change their looks ALL the time!! LOL Also they don't use autotune, synthesizer or anything like that, it's all vocals! They do occasionally use an instrument but it is prominent as in their cover of "Radioactive" a collaboration with Lindsey Sterling a violinist/dancer. In this video not only does Lindsey play violin but Kevin is cello-boxing!! WELCOME TO THE PTX RABBIT HOLE AND FAMILY!! 😊❤

There’s a reason why they’re the only a cappella group in history to win a Grammy, and they’ve won 3 and were nominated for a fourth. They are the cream of the crop in a cappella music, in my opinion. You literally cannot go wrong with any of their 200+ songs. They do covers and originals. I subbed for more. Pentatonix (PTX). The more you react to them, the more Pentaholics (true Pentatonix fans) will flock to your channel. I’ve seen reactors get 20,000+ subs in a week after they start reacting to them. They have many song with over 100 million views, and their official channel has over 20 million subscribers, so you have a large pool of fans you can get.

Absolutely, we'd love to hear more of what you think of our most favorite a cappella group. We Pentaholics LOVE to see new people discover all the things about Pentatonix, such as the "Mitch Slap", the PTX "wall of sound", the "roller-coaster ride of Emotions" , the pure "Genius" of arrangement, the "other worldly vocals", and lets not forget the "EPIC Videography". These people are a VERY tight nit family and it shows in everything they do. Next suggestions... PICK ANYTHING.... Okay I'll start off, " Run to You", "Daft Punk Medley", "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies"... I could go on for weeks, but you get it.. !!!

The 3 in the middle were in college together. It’s not just the harmony, it’s the precision of their timing and diction that is so necessary. I love their rendition of “ Amazing Grace- My chains are Gone”

How did Pentatonix happen? Funny you should ask.
Scott (tall blond lyric baritone, first soloist in this song), Mitch (contratenor with a range of just over 6 octaves, second soloist in this song), and Kirstie (the only woman in Pentatonix, sings anywhere from low alto through high soprano, has gorgeous whistle notes on top of that) are all from Arlington, Texas. They were all involved in community musical theater when they were in grade school, and Mitch met and became friends with both of the others when he was 8 or 9 years old, but somehow Kirstie and Scott didn't meet until they were 14 and found themselves in the same class in high school.
They were all choir geeks (duh), and quickly became best friends in high school. At some point they formed a trio that performed at school events and occasionally appeared on local television. Not so imaginatively they named it "The Trio." (Whenever you hear a pentaholic refer to "the trio" they mean Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie.)
Scott and Kirstie were a year ahead of Mitch in high school; they graduated in 2010 when Mitch still had a year left to go, and each went off for their freshman year at college. Kirstie had a full ride scholarship at the University of Oklahoma and Scott went to the University of Southern California.
Scott is an extreme extrovert, so one of the first things he did at college was look for extracurricular activities where he could make new friends, and he quickly found and joined SoCal VoCals, an award winning amateur a cappella group. Through SoCal VoCals he met a man named Ben Bram who had a job as a coach on an a cappella competition show named _"The Sing-Off"_ which was running on NBC.
The way _"The Sing-Off"_ worked was that bands would audition for the show, and those that passed the audition would perform throughout the season. Some bands would be eliminated along the way, tightening the competition. After the 12th performance voting was opened for viewers. First prize was $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the show's sponsor.
Scott was intrigued when he heard about _"The Sing-Off."_ He thought The Trio could be competitive, and if they won it could give them a career doing what they loved best, with the people they loved best. The Trio need never split up. What a marvelous possibility! Scott talked to Kirstie about it, and she liked the idea, so at the end of their first year of college Scott and Kirstie went home to Arlington, to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk with Mitch about Scott's plan.
Meanwhile, Mitch had been having a hard time. He was being seriously bullied for his high voice. Since Mitch and Scott are both gay and were already out of the closet this was really poorly disguised gay-bashing, but Mitch internalized it as actually being about his voice - he was rapidly concluding that he had a horrible voice and no one liked it. So when Scott presented his plan Mitch had doubts, but both Scott and Kirstie told him his voice wouldn't be a problem, and it was a way to get away from the bullies, so Mitch was in.
So Scott called Ben Bram to find out how to set up an audition, and they ran into their first major problem - _"The Sing-Off"_ had a size limit. The smallest band allowed was five members. The Trio needed two new singers and a new name. Ben suggested that they'd do well to add a rhythm section: a bass and a beatboxer. He had someone in mind for the bass, an operatically trained basso profundo whose range extended up into the tenor range - the guy's name was Avi Kaplan. They talked to Avi, and he was, indeed, interested, but they still needed a beatboxer and Ben had no idea how they should go about finding one.
In desperation they went to UA-cam and typed in "beatboxer," and the first hit they got was a viral video of a blackguy beatboxing while playing the cello beautifully. "Wow! He's the one! Let's get him!" Good idea, but how do you actually do that? Well, they looked for contact information and they found out that it was possible to send a direct message on UA-cam (this is no longer available), so they messaged him. "Hey, we really like what you do, and we have a strange question for you: How do you feel about flying across the country to join 4 strangers and audition for an a cappella competition show on television?"
And Kevin messaged them back: "Normally I'd love to do that, but right now I'm studying for my final exams to get my pre-med degree from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite; better look for someone else - the audition was coming up fast. But no one else was as good as Kevin.
And two weeks later Kevin messaged them again: "Good news - I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly to California and audition with you." They met Kevin and Avi in person the day before the audition. Mitch had to miss his graduation ceremony to attend the audition. But they passed the audition; they were in.
Oh yes, the name. Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just as Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancy way of saying they're The Quintet. 😂
Pentatonix appeared throughout season 3 of _"The Sing-Off,"_ eventually winning it. So they all moved to southern California to begin their new career recording music, and a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying they didn't know how to market a cappella. But by this time all five of them were totally dedicated to the dream of staying together that they decided to make it happen regardless of what record labels might say. So they pooled their money, used the $200,000 as seed money. The four men shared two apartments to save money. They lived frugally. They arranged music. They rehearsed daily. And whenever they had a song ready to go they recorded it on their iPhones and posted it to UA-cam, where their fans from _"The Sing-Off"_ quickly found and followed them. Then other people found and followed them, and they started going viral. And Sony noticed. "Um, hey Pentatonix. We have another subsidiary named Madison Gate. Would you like a recording contract with them? They don't do much music, but..." Darn right they'd like a recording contract!
And then they published "Daft Punk Medley," and it didn't just go viral, it won a Grammy. Grammys weren't something Sony expected to come out of Madison Gate. "Um, hey Pentatonix. We think we made a mistake placing you with Madison Gate. We think our flagship company, RCA, might be a better fit for you. Are you interested?" Pentatonix has been with RCA ever since.
Avi left the band in 2017, for personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career, and I highly recommend subscribing to his UA-cam channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
Matt is Avi's replacement; he joined in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it). In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix Matt is also the youngest member, and bass voices improve with age. "Sound of Silence" was recorded four years ago and doesn't give an accurate idea of Matt's current range. For that I recommend listening to a recent live feed of "Hallelujah," where Matt's arrangement on the second verse appears to have been designed to show off his full range: ua-cam.com/video/ASYzLoi810k/v-deo.html

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair) - NOT IN THIS VIDEO, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23.
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

As other Pentaholics have mentioned, Scott (the tall baritone/bass/and every other register you need him to sing in), Kirsty (pronounced like "thirsty". The only female in the band and her beautiful soprano voice sets the band apart from the 2 other A'Capella bands) and Mitch (the contra-tenor with the mullet) were best friends in High School. While in College, Scott wanted to enter a television singing contest for A'Capella groups called "The Sing Off". They had to have a minimum of 5 people to enter, so, as you will learn on your PTX journey, they found Avi (he was not in this video but sang in "Hallelujah". He was the original bass.) and Kevin (the beatboxer extraordinaire) and asked them to join. They met the day before the audition! The amazing thing is all their performances are still on youtube and reacting to each performance is something most serious PTX reactors do. And we LOVE IT!!!

We are Pentatonix, we are committed to bringing joy to the world through music. We are Scott (baritone/bass) Mitch (tenor), Kirstin (queen soprano), Matt (bass), Avi (og bass, left in 2017) and Kevin (808/cello). We promise to make you happy, make you think, and maybe shed some tears. We have a fiercely loyal fan base who call themselves Pentaholix, and we love them all. We think that it’s safe for you to assume that they don’t care where you begin your journey to a ca-enlightenment. We only have one rule, you may not interrupt Kirstie (no umlaut)unless you go back to the beginning. Incidentally, our Pentaholix don’t mind pauses, because we acknowledge the stick the copyright gremlins have up their collective, that can discourage creators. We want you to enjoy our music and share it with as many people as possible, so that you can bring more hearts into the family. We suggest that you start with the Sing Off, the competition show we won back in 2011. On the show, you’ll find our origin story, which we think you’ll find interesting, and fun. We’re excited to have you join our little family of 20 million.

Since you already saw hallelujah, theres a live version (a cpl actually) but i like a pentatonix christmas special as it still has avi and ehen you start this rabbit hole, you should start with their early works first so you can see their growth and evolution over the years which youd miss if you started with recent stuff and worked ur way backward. So next suggestion, dance of thr sugar plum fairy (grammy), and daft punk (grammy) the official video FIRST, filmed in avi's closet as this was the diy days before they hit it big, so everything on a budget but i think made them more creative than if theyd had a label calling the shots. After you watch the official video, then watch theur daft punk private performance. In that order! Listen to the video first then private performance bc you can better appreciate it. The private performance is in a green room somewhere filmed by someone and their cell phone, no microphones, no studio to mix or layer, just them singing. You cant get more live than that snd proves they dont need studio magic, they sound the same live as they do recorded. Which proves their doctrine, which is they wont do any song unless thry can perform it live without even microphones on demand, any song, and execute it flawlessly. 😊

As far as seeing PTX live: unfortunately for you, they finished their world tour (including a swing through the UK) earlier this spring, so it may be a while before they're back in your area - they're currently touring in the US. However, there are any number of videos available on UA-cam from fans who have recorded songs from their concerts, as well as a few more professional films of them. The fan films are sometimes of "iffy" quality, depending on the equipment used (usually a cell phone), but there are some that are pretty good. And they did a concert in the US at the Hollywood Bowl in California in September 2022 that was recorded for a livestream broadcast, and those videos (most of the concert) are also available on UA-cam on Miles Reubens channel (www.youtube.com/@milesreuben2127). So there are lots of videos of them performing live you can enjoy - or always the official mussic videos!

First time on your channel for a great reaction!! Those of us who follow Pentatonix will come in for any reaction, because we like watching people discover this highly talented group! I don't know where you live, but they went on an Asian/European tour earlier this year. I will subscribe for more PTX, because you just can't help wanting more! LOL They have several original songs, as well. "Sing" is one of their earlier efforts with their original bass, Avi Kaplan. It's a fun one...but there are so many more! Once you get toward the holidays...Pentatonix OWNS Christmas/Holiday songs! They have won three Grammys...their first one was a medley of Daft Punk songs, which you may enjoy! Have fun!!

I enjoyed watching you watching one of my favourite groups. Great, great harmonies. Try Imagine or their Daft Punk medley which was the first of their three Grammys.
Another group with stunning harmonies who did The Sound Of Silence is Forestella. They are a South Korean male quartet and as such are not acapella. All their singers are outstanding, not least their bass and counter tenor. They are apparently known as The Kings Of Harmony, which is perfectly reasonable. They're comprised of two trained Opera singers and two singers from a more Rock background and so they're at least as versatile as the excellent Pentatonix.

The girl is Kirsten Maldonado, the tall blond man is Scott Hoying, and the Counter-Tenor is Mitch Grassi. This trio grew up together and went to Martin High School in Arlinton, TX, the town between Dallas and Ft. Worth which also has 6 Flags Over Texas, and the AT&T Football Stadium for the Dallas Cowboys. They went to different colleges, but entered a competition called "Sing Off" together and won.

If you want a feel of what they can do live, I suggest listening to there medley of Daft Punk songs. Listen to the video version (it won a Grammy) then listen to an off mic version they did backstage for a make a wish kid. The latter is filmed on a cell phone so the bass is somewhat lost but it sounds virtually identical to the studio one.

From an old GenXer the classic, "stand the test of time" songs... 2 songs come to mind immediately!
Quick FYI... to a Pentaholic PTX doesn't do Covers... we call them "Up-grades."
Get ready for a bombardment of subs and info.
    Some "Up-grades" you might enjoy:
    Queens Bohemian Rhapsody
    John Lennons Imagine
Want to know a bit about the group and their AMAZING Beatboxer Kevin (💯 biased)... I suggest the 17+ minute (includes a story Scott (tall blond) tells of how they Found Kevin. UA-cam has named "Kevin's 5th" easily found... if not add Pentatonix to the search. Worth every minute.
