That line floored me. It amuses me when I see poorly translated eBay listings for fountain pens that talk about having a medium feather. All my pens are carved from flint and inked up with woolly mammoth blood before I write my cuneiform onto deerskin and pin it to the wall of my cave. No feathers in sight.

LOVE this! My calligraphy instructor was adamant about not letting anyone use your pens. I actually had a nib ruined (back in college room mate days, many moons ago) by someone attempting to use my left-handed oblique to leave a note. It was like walking into a crime scene of scratched paper and "What is wrong with this pen?" scrawled out in blotchy letters. Obviously I haven't recovered from the memory. So, perhaps it's a myth for fountain pens, but for oblique nibs, I'd be wary. I did let a TRUSTED, fellow-lefty try my Pilot Metropolitan, tho. It survived. To paraphrase Elaine in Seinfeld: "So you think you're fountain pen worthy?" Usually the answer is NOPE. :-)

I'm a lefty and have been writing with fountain pens since the mid70s (with a long break in between). My first one was a Geha student pen with a lefty nib. My first "adult" fp was a Lamy AL-Star with a LH nib, but I don't get along with the grip section. I have one TWSBI AL-R 580 with a lefty nib grind by Taiwanese nibmeister Tommy Zheng, but all my other nibs are standard ones. My favorite has to be the Pilot WA nib.
The other day I came across a mangled Opus 88 Bela at an eslite Spectrum tester table. The pen had run out of ink and a person who didn't know what they were doing pressed down until there's now a gap between the nib and the feed. I pointed it out to the staff. The lady started to pull on the cap and I said "Turn! Turn!" Yikes!

Great video! I wonder if the "loaning" myth came about because lending your well loved pen to someone who isn't used to writing with one can see the person press too hard (since they're used to writing with ballpoints) or work too hard to start ink flow, which can ruin the nib. 🤔🤷‍♀️ All I know is my dad was an avid pen collector, so I've been using fountain and other unique pens all my life, and it's great that people like yourself are helping to educate others so they can enjoy them, too! 😊 Keep up the great work!

When I started using fountain pens a few years ago, I redesigned my entire print handwriting style. I removed the vast majority of the useless strokes, use different stroke order depending on whether the last letter finished at the top, baseline, or below. (You should see people when I write an 'i' starting at the top with the dot!) My printing speed as improved markedly, and the style is beginning to morph into a bit more flowing style, while keeping the fast writing characteristics. Thank you kindly for helping me down this path.

I'm an ambidextrous (side-writer) fountain pen user and I actually find it easier to use them left-handed than right-handed! Fountain pens are basically the ONLY pens I like using left-handed.
I initially got into them because of calligraphy, but I've actually found that I prefer writing for normal writing with them and my only regret was that it took me over three years to actually go ahead and buy a decent one (I had a Zebra from a CVS or Target or something that was horrible). My first real fountain pen was a Monteverde Ritma which, while I like the heft and aesthetic, it does get a bit heavy for long writing sessions.
I'm still cautious about letting people use my pens because I've had people be absolutely terrible to my calligraphy pens in the past (through just not knowing any better, not maliciously destroying them), but given that I'm a little older now and one of my good friends IRL is also into fountain pens, this also helps!

When I was Christmas shopping at a gift store a retail employee asked me if I needed help finding something. I asked if they carried any fountain pens. She actually had her mouth open for a noticeable time then she said. I have never heard of them what are they. Needless to say I didn't bother asking if they had fountain pen ink CTMS (Chucke To MySelf, because laughing out loud would get me kicked out of the library... again).

I'm an IT Consultant and I use fountain pens. Comparing between a fountain pen and a ball pen is like comparing between pizza and a nice candle light dinner.
Roller ball pens are like having a pizza date. Yes, fountain pen did reignite my passion for cursive. My handwriting isn't like a calligrapher, but it sure is far better than earlier. So yes, fountain pens all the way!! 👍🏻

I got a cheap calligraphy FP at Hobby Lobby and once getting some decent ink (Waterman) instead of the store brand which dried up nightmarishly fast, I have come to really like it. I was given a little bit nicer one with a standard nib and both have been added to my daily use pen collection for class and sketching, can’t wait to expand my ink collection

Thank you for this video!! I know these myths have always ran through my head, even though I have been using fountain pens since I was in middle school.. I just hear it so often the the people I work with. Especially out here in the Oil & Gas construction industry. So greasy, so rough.. and yet, my cross has never failed me yet, unless I run out of ink, but I always have a spare ink refill on me.

I have chicken scratch, but it’s because holding a pen down on paper enough to make it put ink on the paper gets tiring so I give up and just type instead, I think fountain pens will help a lot with that since you really don’t need much pressure at all from what I’ve seen unless you want a thicker line than normal and you can chose a soft broad tip if that’s your go to size for normal use lol

I have a very distinct pen grip that unfortunately wasn't corrected when I was a child, and writing with anything else but an FP has my hand hurting in a minute! Certainly didn't wanna use fountain pens because they looked fancy. Sometimes, because of that negative connotation people have, I sometimes try to hide the fact that I'm even using a FP by using hooded nibs instead. This is especially the case in law school, where everything you do might be seen as trying to be ostentatious....

I bet he does mind if his clients see his sci-fi and anime collections... There's a professional image you sorta need to uphold to a certain extend but nothing ostentatious :p

I heard that at night fountain pens crawl out of storage and bully other writing implements for being inferior. This saddens me as I have an unnatural fondness for mechanical pencils. My steel Uni-ball Kuru Toga has been looking a bit stresses lately...

    • @teaartist6455
      @teaartist6455 6 років тому

It's true, some even kill in broad daylight.
They haven't gotten my mechanical pencils yet, possibly because they aren't seen as a threat since they are cheap giveaways, but the moment a ballpoint one would actually have to pay for entered the domain of my Pelikan M200 it was brutally slaughtered and left to bleed to death. Poor thing couldn't even move when I found it.

The feather myth may in part have something to do with language barriers, in German you call a feather, quill, nib AND spring the same ("Feder") and i can imagine something similar happening in other languages.
And yes, that naming convention leads to quite a bit of misunderstanding when talking about Sheaffer Snorkels, who have both a nib and a spring.
