    Long but!
Excuse me but! This is mechanical advantage.
Try the whole thing standing on one leg.
Everything you are doing is leveraged by the feet. Always, forever!
Not the distance along the stick, which is strength and stability in the grip.
This leverage only applies with the armpits closed and the “vertical body weight” (drop line) is within the parameter of your body - feet, knees.
From 5:50 the leverage is through the feet/legs/hips.
Because the armpits are closed the leverage from the feet is translated through the torso. You also drop lower each time. This give you a greater stability/strength to move the bag. The armpits are still closed.
Also your vertical body weight is still dropping within the parameters of your torso/body which gives you a greater strength to leveraged, from the feet.
If you open your armpits then your strength is greatly weakened as you loose the leverage from the feet and it becomes a shoulder strength wrestling match.
Or if you lean to far forwards then it is a shoulder strength situation again.
Even at the very beginning of the bag example 4:58 it is possible to see your legs moving as your weight is distributed across both hips.
This is because of the closed armpits and the leveraging at the feet.
Critically thick you torso/feet/leverage, not the numbers.
With the dumbbell your choice of axis remains the same. Your force is your front leg through the hip as you armpit is closed again.
Also your bodyweight/strength is lower than the dumb bell so it becomes a push up instead of a lift..
The whole concept is not right/wrong.
    Feet mechanical advantage -
Your drop line, vertical gravitational wight, is dropped at the hips/Tanden/the centre, probably from a chinese/Japanes point of view in/down the front of your body which alters your drop line.
Just think Michael Jackson - moon walk. He leverages his body front the toes to the heel, across the space in-between his feet and onto the back foot, toes to heel. It is all leverage from the feet, period.
    With regards. Avaguday.
