I’m a Shetlander and knitwear designer who also works at J&S (which you need to visit when your in Shetland!) Marie Wallin is a great designer but definitely would not be considered Fair Isle by Shetlanders, there are lots of patterns now designed by Shetlanders or available in books you will find when you visit which would be much more ‘true’ Fair Isle 😊

It was such a pleasure to meet you when I was in Shetland and I enjoyed your talk about your collection of sweaters. You're an incredible designer.

Hi - I’m curious about why MW isn’t considered “real Fair Isle” and what designers would be included. I’m a very beginning stranded knitter, so ignorant.

@@MABrody She is a very talented designer who designs lovely things but they are not Shetland/Fair Isle - they are stranded colour work. I would start with designers and knitters who are from Shetland and live here as we truly understand and are part of the culture of knitting in Shetland.

Hi Ella, I'm a knitter on the wastside, and I have been attempting to define what Fair Isle knitting actually is.
To my mind F I should:
Incorporate a continuity of pattern and colour throughout the item.
Create a pattern which could be considered to have a 3d quality.
Knitted only in 2 colours per row.
The background and pattern colour should not change on the same row.
What do you think, or is this list just my take on it?
      Much love fae Waas ❤

You hit my favorite topic! I love Fairisle and Stranded Knitting. I own many resource books as well. I love to make beanies and pick my own stranded knitting, mottifs, and Fairisle. It is fun to choose the colors as well. So much appreciated that you covered this topic

Love the Fair Ile Color Variations. They are so vivid and make such a statement! The yarns and yarn colors are fun as the variations are so wild and delicate at the same time. Just swatch two or three of them as you will Devine just what works the best for you in colors and for the style making a treasure for wearing and keeping for ever! Maybe add some cabling or a zipper and even buttons. Good on you have fun!!

Sounds exciting! My main suggestion would be to pick one pattern that you love ALL of the shape and details (like neck and sleeves) of, and then one that you love the fair isle patterns. Because as soon as you have decided on the shape, you can drop any pattern into it. So for example, you may go for the fairly subdued man's sweater shape, but pattern it with one of Marie Wallin's combination of patterns. The sky is literally the limit there. Have a lovely trip, and make sure to say Hi if you're coming through London.🖐

Gus kills me. I switched the episode on looking forward to the topic but had to pause for several seconds just to let all the cute vibes roll over me. I had an orange-white cat once. Miss him dearly 😢. Wonderful introduction into Fair Isle!!!❤
And I’d like to comment on your excellent camera quality, particularly how you can zoom in, as well as your clear explanations.
Marie Wallin ❤❤❤. I have to date only attempted one colorwork item, which was kind of a fail. But that’s ok. I was experimenting. I am obsessed with the Bressay pullover, the Camomile beret and the Honeysuckle Cardigan…. I have a sense the larger items could take me nearly a year to knit. But it would be so worth it, right?
So sad the Lerwick pattern is no longer available. I think that would have looked stunning on you. My vote goes for the first vest!

My first pick was that 2 color sweater.... You can stay with the neutral color for the base and switch up the detail with 4, 5, 6 or more colors. You don't have to keep it 2 colors.
The vest is another one I liked as well and can see you adapting it to you. Or Ned. The last sweater I can see on Ned. Just pick his colors. Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip! ❤

if you are in Shetland at the end of September until beginning of October you can go to the Shetland wool week. I went last year and it was a lot of fun hoping to go again next year won't make it this year. Jamieson & Smith are the second wool store in Lerwick and well worth a visit as they are a wool broker so you can see the process from the start to finish if you get on one of the tours they do during the SWW. Peerie is a Shetland word not necessarily a Scottish word. Shetland has its own language so be aware you will not be able to understand a local if they are speaking fast. The museum and other places are worth a visit. Jarlshof is an Iron Age settlement you can visit and highly recommend going to it if you have time

When you are in Shetland be sure to look into Shetland wedding ring shawls. They are knit and so fine you can pull the shawl through a wedding ring. A family friend is one of the few full time makers of these shawls in Shetland. I am 3rd generation born off island but still go up to visit family when I can

Keris and Bessyboot are my favorites also, they’re gorgeous! I just have a little doubt about Bessyboot: I’m relatively tall (at least taller than the average Italian woman) and the super elegant 3/4 sleeves that look so nice on my friends sometimes on me seems like I’m wearing a smaller size than I deserve. So if you will go for the Bessyboot, I suggest that you plan carefully the length of the sleeves (or at least this is what I would do 😅). Have a safe and enjoyable trip in Scotland, I was there some years ago and absolutely loved it!

Mark, your lecture on Shetland and Fair Isle and everything above absolutely spilled everything I think I know on the subject. Another fine author is (?my copy is in storage) Michael Pearson. Now my question: If you undertake "Wintergarden" will you be careful to keep maybe the white in your right hand and the color in the left? I neglected this with single strand color work on sock toes -- and boy does it show up! Thank you! [I see you keep your colors in your left hand, but it's the same idea.]

Hello Mark, Gus, and Scout! I like the Samphrey pattern best. If you use a lighter neutral as your background and brighter, jewel tones for the colorwork, it would present better. But any of these patterns would work fine and look great. Today I am working (still) on a Tunisian mesh shawl.

If you have not seen Sanquahar knitting it is definitely looking into. Some gorgeous hand work. And one of my favorite places to see, location was absolutely stunning, was Ardalanish in Craignure. Ardalanish weavers was the name of the farm/mill right on the cliffs and beach. Such a beautiful place.

Hi - Just an update for you regarding the Marie Wallin Fairisle Club 3: Lerwick pattern. This pattern is only available to those who have participated in one of Marie Wallin’s Fairisle Clubs. She comes out with a new pattern & kit once a year and limits the number of individuals who can participate. It usually sells out quickly. I’m currently working on this year’s club nine: Ottoman. Once you participate in one of the clubs then you can purchase any of the other past clubs kits and patters.
    Happy knitting!

Suggest you get a shade card from Jamieson & Smith another Shetland wool broker. They do have them in stock, and also have a good selection of patterns and books. Shetland yarn, 4ply also called jumper weight comes in 25 gram balls. Your going to have a wonderful time there, don’t forget you don’t have to stick to the pattern colour ways. I like Marie Wallins patterns the most I like the Troutbek one best, but there are other patterns out there, lots of them

Gus is darling. I have been obsessing over my first official Fair Isle pattern too. I am a tall woman and am also concerned about which design will be most flattering. I seem to have gradually lost my waist since menopause and horizontal stripes are not flattering.. so I have been looking at patterns that have less contrast with the bands and focus more on color play. I am frustrated by the fact that Jamieson does not ship to Europe presently and buying it from European stores means it is ridiculously expensive. I have had such a hard time finding appropriate yarn that I decided to try a small vest with sock yarn. It was a good exercise but the weird stretchiness of the yarn is not enjoyable. It annoys me to no end that my local yarn stores here in Germany are so focused on sock yarn that there is very little yarn variety. I envy your trip to England !

You really should go to Jamieson & Smith also. The shop is full of beautiful wool and you might even meet a designer or two in the store. It's a wonderful, not-to-miss stop. I've been to Shetland twice and, while I hate to choose a favorite, I think that J&S might win out by a little.

They're all lovely ❤... But to me, as Scandinavian, the second is more a modern Icelandic pattern, and the 4th, Marius, is a famous traditional Norwegian pattern... So both a no.
You seem to like the ones with repetetive patterns, so why not choose one of them, but change the background colour in wide stripes, instead of having the same background colour through the sweater..? That way you'll get a beautiful modern, but still more fairisle look to it?

From Marie Wallin’s collection, I’ve knit the Primrose jumper and the Kilim Cardigan (Fair Isle 7 Club), a couple of pillow covers, and a hat. I do love her combinations of color and design, but her patterns have really underwhelming schematics, and that bugs me more than I can say. I will probably knit at least one more of her designs at some point. I do have the kit for Fair Isle 6 hanging around here somewhere. For now, however, I’m obsessed with two other Scots, Alice Starmore (who I assume must be the absolute queen of Fair Isle Knitting) and Kate Davies, whose designs are so adorable.
