When Lamborghini and McLaren Made an F1 Car that was Unbeatable
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 січ 2021
- Did Lamborghini have an f1 team? Were Lamborghini ever in F1? Did Lamborghini even have a chance in F1?
Throughout Lamborghini's F1 team history, the Lamborghini F1 team produced some impressive results, along with extremely competitive power units, such as the Lamborghini F1 V12 engine used by the Mclaren F1 team in 1993. They decided to give Lamborghini their last chance in being a power unit supplier in F1. The mysterious McLaren MP48B marked an important turning point for both the Lamborghini V12 engine and the iconic Mclaren F1 Racing Team. The Mclaren MP48B was installed with the Lamborghini F1 V12 Engine, at the time frowned upon due to poor reliability. Since the car was expirmental, It was painted white with no sponsers on it. The legendary Ayrton Senna along with Mika Hakkinen drove the Lamborghini powered F1 car at Silverstone and Estoril, and they were immediately impressed by the Lamborghini's immense power output. The Lamborghini F1 V12 engine was by far more powerful then the customer spec Ford V8s, and Senna seriously vouched for the Lamborghini F1 engine being used by the Mclaren F1 Team. Although the Lamborghini F1 Team had a shortlived career in F1, Lamborghini remained a power unit supplier for other F1 teams. This is the story of the iconic MP48/B that housed the iconic Lamborghini V12 engine. Although Mclaren decided to not use the Lamborghini F1 team's engine, this event will not be forgotten in F1, and the racing pedigree of Lamborghini in F1 will mark a very nostalgic reminder of the potential Lamborghini had in F1.

That hurt my ears NEARLY as much as the 12c Lambo engine.
But at least I laughed.
So that engine was the most incredible shriek ever in F1 and if you ever have a chance to hear it on a straight take it!
Sorry for all the pronunciation and spelling issues, will be more careful in the future. Thanks to all who pointed it out, there’s always room for improvement, and I’ll be sure to watch out for those in new vids👍
You're fine.
Still a great video regardless, just minor mistakes
If you want, I can do the voiceovers from now on. I have a great voice and can pronounce anything in almost any language.
Maybe a switch to Lamborghini engines would’ve convinced Senna to stay at McLaren...
If that happens and won in that car, Lamborghini may have a place in F1, love to see Lambo in F1
@@bradwhite5884 I almost exploded when I found out Lambos also made engines for offshore powerboat racing 😍😍😍😍
Fun fact, Martin Whitmarsh, who later became McLaren's race division manager, revealed that the test car was purposely 'slowed down' as they already had a contract with Peugeot at that point. The car wasn't supposed to go faster than a certain amount of speed. Whitmarsh made Dave Ryan, the team manager at the time, fill up the car with nearly 100 kilos of fuel, and despite that Senna was able to recognize how fast the car was.
So obviously, a huge missed opportunity from McLaren if you ask me. Then again, they were highly skeptical about Lamborghini's claims regarding the engine, and they probably did not see that coming as the Larousse machinery was painfully slow on track.
They were extremely stupid and put business before success.
@@Toxic2T idiotic considering that success means bussiness
How d you know?
It had terrible reliability, they would’ve led every race before retiring in a cloud of smoke
@MPG They already had a deal with Peugeot as @Flatsixturbo says. He is also right about the purposely slowing down, I heard that story in a podcast a while back. The car was so quick it would or wouldn't have triggered a clause in a contract of some description, I can't remember exactly what the story was, so they slowed the Lambo engined car down on purpose. Bit silly of them TBH but I'm sure there was a commercial reason of some king, that said the Lamborghini engine was terribly unreliable so would likely have been just as bad as the Peugeot and their 94 car was a dog anyway so I doubt it would have made much difference. V12 engines also used a lot more fuel, it had to be more powerful than the rest to make up for carrying more fuel, this is the problem Ferrari had with their V12 and the reason for their eventual switch to a V10 which was the perfect compromise between outright power of a V12 and the fuel efficiency / driveability of a V8.

Meet one of the engineers who worked on the engine and he showed me a couple of the drawing sheets. He said the team was heart broken as that was the end of the project.
I was always a Lamborghini fanboy and this video just makes me happy 😃 because Lamborghini never was a racing car or team, it was just about beating Ferrari and looking damn good 😁

I heard straight from Zak Browns mouth the Senna loved the Lambo. Imagine they had gone with the lambo. For sure Senna would have stayed & who knows, Lambo might have had a legacy in the game today..

I thought it was the puegeot v10s he was referring to
this video sucks, lambo had awful reliability as evidenced in the larousse team
On a far fetched assumption, if they had taken the V12 Lambo, Senna probably would 've still been here. But that's how things work I guess.
Definitely dominated 1988 and 89, but 90 & 91 were close fights and they were wiped off the map by Williams-Renault in 92.

"Made an F1 Car that was Unbeatable" Yes, they already knew this from a single test. Pardon my sarcasm.
"Throughout Lamborghini's F1 team history, the Lamborghini F1 team produced some impressive results, along with extremely competitive power units, such as the Lamborghini F1 V12 engine" Yes, so competitive it managed a whopping total of 10 points from 80 started races. 7 different teams used the Lamborghini V12 and *none of them were anywhere near competitive.*
"such as the Lamborghini F1 V12 engine used by the Mclaren F1 team in 1993." McLaren used Ford Cosworth V8's in 1993. What's the matter with you??
"The mysterious McLaren MP48B marked an important turning point for both the Lamborghini V12 engine and the iconic Mclaren F1 Racing Team." Yeah, such an important turning point since *nothing came out if it aside from a test* .
"Although the Lamborghini F1 Team had a shortlived career in F1, Lamborghini remained a power unit supplier for other F1 teams. " False. 1993 was the last season. Lamborghini powered *no teams in 1994 onward* .
"and the racing pedigree of Lamborghini in F1" Do you know what the word pedigree means?? Lamborghini's record in F1 is a forgotten footnote in history.
The amount of *utter nonsense* that comes out of some people never seizes to amaze me. Worse, there are tons of ignoramuses who will take them for their word. How depressing.
Really great video! I foresee successes for you on this platform in the future!
To think, if this partnership happened Senna would very likely still be alive today since he wouldn't transfer over to Williams....

I love to see Lambo participate in F1, that would be cool, something they haven't done, they made fast exotic cars but never made an F1 car, hope one day they will
Not true. They had. 1991 Modena Team was a pure Lambo- Projekt. But while the engine was promising, like the Viodeo content is about, the chassis of that Modena Team car was dreadfull. Understeering followed by oversteering whitout any warning. The car was difficult to hold on the track. Listen to what Larina had to say about it.
And beside that kind of bad performance, they missed a 5. Place finish in Imola 1991 only by 1 km, as Van De Poele run out 2 corners bevor finish. Really a sad moment.
I'm in love with your editing dude

Good videos mate
Not sure what you're saying here is right. The McLaren would've been much heavier. It wasn't a case of simply adding more power. I think Senna was simply challenging Ron Dennis.
Cool editing man
Appreciate it🙌
If you say Honda supplied McLaren with engines for last four years (1988-1992) then you are wrong. It's five years.
I'd say it is a little far fetched. Power perhaps, but weight, fuel consumption, reliability, useability all play a big role and I think Renault was simply ahead of big heavy V12's in these areas..
yes, its not said Lamborghini would have succeeded. after all, Ferrari with his V12 never reached the horse power of Renault V10 and they decided to switch to a V10 for the 96 season. so its not so simple. weight and fuel consumption was a factor so as lenght. and not to forget: McLaren in 93 had not only a power problem, they had also an aerodynamic issue in relation to Benettons performance. so Sennas decision to leave the team was right.
Ferrari: I'm the best and the only Italian thats good!
Lamborghini: *enters F1*
Ferrari: *a u t i s t i c s c r e e c h*
I dont understand how the hell its legal to have v10s up against v8s
This is why Red Bull helped develop honda f1 engines.
Chrysler wasn´t very keen on putting more money on the development of Lambo V12 and Ron Dennis knew this and thought it´s better to go with Peugeot that was willing to invest in their V10. The Peugeot V10 was a hand grenade but I doubt Lambo V12 would have been a big success either, faster yes but no development.
Benetton sportsystem
Lol you claimed that Maclaren dominating from 1988 to 1992 it was 88 to 91. In 1992 Williams had pole 15 out of 16 races and won both championships mansell won 9 races that year and had 14 poles.
The point is Lamborghini missed to show a good product when they were around so no front grid team showed any interest in a tractor manufacturer. Be it Lotus or Larousse, you cannot say you had the right car designer for the right engine, even less the cash for the marriage to bear fruits. Kinda sad Dennis only looked up to the Renault in 92 when the Lambo was at hand. To only land an outdated v8 ford... Napoleon would've avoided Russia disaster with the right choice, as would Ron with Lambo...
"Nowadays F1 cars are giant billboards." Okay, and what did McLaren's race livery look like back then? It didn't have any "sponsers" either but it sure as hell had one very prominent sponsor. Here's a hint: SMOOOOOOOOKE!
Ah yes, Reno. Not Renault, but RENO
if i get $1 everytime honda left f1, i could afford a civic..
why would anyone pretend the Lambo engine was good?
it wasn't
Unbeatable? Almost " click bait" - too heavy, unreliable, oiling issues, torsional block issues. Rushed development. Exactly what did it beat?
Go ask ayrton se... Oh he's dead (😭), shit
Lambo should follow Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo and sponsor a team, no one really cares that its nothing to do with the road car.
Lambo entered a car for Nicola Larini its only official F1 effort, Lambo along with Lancia naturally belong in F1, as do Maserati, its really a shame.
I want lambo in f1
McLaren did test a Lambo V12 engine in a test mule. A world beater? The fact that it didn’t make it past the testing phase speaks volumes. What was known at the time is thatthe Lambo V12 was a boat anchor.
Interesting.
Lots of the pronunciations and spelling are incorrect. Would fix if you can
Shame that Lamborghini engine didn't have that opportunity.
Senna why you leave us.. thanks for the video
'Maicha' Hakkinen, wow.
If you actually knew what you were talking about. You would know that engine had no chance of making the grid. It was also an outdated engine. So stop acting like this was a lost championship engine. Senna was focused on getting works ford engines or leaving McLaren all together. Senna told the media the Lamborghini engine had potential. Just to humor them. He knew that engine was trash.
By the end of 1993 Ford was giving McLaren the same works engine deal that they gave Benetton.
Lambos are best 🔥💪❤️😍🥺🥺
William, Reno, Maika, maaaaaaaaan......
The culmination - i am eagerly awaiting a remarriage - preferably the McLaren F1 BMW spined aeroflow combined with the Huracan base ...
One may wish or not?
His name is now Mikea lol
why tf did you say Mikas' name like that
Renault. Not renalt. It’s pronounced renno. And it’s spelled Renault. Also, it’s not Micah. It’s Mikka.
It is an interesting idea, but Lambo was never good when it came to reliability. I doubt they would have produced a title winner for at least a few years and by then Senna was tired of not being in what he saw as the best car and team.
All these events sadly sparked the demise of our King
Senna's "last ever race" was at Imola in Italy, not in Australia
Reno??? didn't know the city made engines, it's renault
For goodness sake, those engines were not “Ford”, they were Cosworth engines with Ford bits and money!
And who the feck is Mikehah Hakkinen? It’s pronounced Meekah”
The bit about the car having a plain white livery with no sponsors is not really relevant. Test cars can look like anything. There’s no way that car would have ever turned a wheel in a Grand Prix without fulfilling the ad contracts McLaren had with Marlboro, Shell, Courtaulds, etc.
Can we all take a minute to appreciate how you spelled almost every word wrong
Renault...
Poor effort in spelling of Renault
Unbeateble only if Senna drive.
Unbeatable? Title winning? How? It never even entered a GP.
Yeah Mike-A was a great driver. Ha ha
shut up music in the background 😕
Stupid McLaren missed a huge oportunity.
And I stopped the second the word Reno appeared, if you cant be arsed to spell Renault correctly then you aren't worth my time
Reno??? Wth it's Renault
It was a good car but occasionally blew up half the time and if Ron signed the deal Senna would have stayed though if the car were to fail anyways he feared Senna would eventually leave and for good.
Even a stroke would improve the pronunciations by the narrator.
No way the Lamborghini engine was ever any good, no way
The Lambo engine was under powered and way too heavy. It was not a competitive engine.
And even if so, the problems would have been solved, Mc Laren would have done much better in 1994 than with the Peugot engine and most of all Senna would have been sitting in the Williams on May the first 1994.....
No sponsors? The car wasn’t painted in the Marlbro livery because it was a test mule, if they had used the engine the car would have been painted like a pack of cigarettes.
Thanks Captain Obvious.
Micha Hakkonen
V12 would have been too heavy and too thirsty(in 93 refueling was banned, but allowed in 94), and too high CoG, and not stiff enough to mount the rear suspension. There is a reason why v12 only won 1 championship between 1980 and now, the v12 is a very inefficient powerplant.
