Wow, you added a lot of thought there. Do you mean like the USA who encouraged Ukraine to apply for NATO, to apply for EU membership, and now watch from the sidelines? The USAs actions are almost as empty as those words you just wrote! Platitudes are easy to say but don't really add anything other that making the person saying them feel superior. Look at the number of people in the world telling Americans we have no moral right to talk about the Ukraine invasion since we just finished our own. Russians have a system designed since Soviet times to ensure the people have no power, where even their Army has been castrated of power. Successful generals/officers under Putin get purged after wars to make sure they aren't a threat (see what happened after Chechnya), and loyal FSB (think KGB) officers placed in power. Then there is Russian special guard, the Rosgvardiya, a whole separate Army of 340,000 that answer to Putin. So they have a disarmed populace(no Second Amendment there), the FSB monitoring them, and an entire Praetorian guard army standing between anything they can do. That is why so many in the USA fight back against any slippery slope like taking away of second amendment rights, because after it happens, it's super hard to change.

Freedom is something that must be teached. I can tell you my experience, I am Russian by birth, but many years ago at age of 12 I moved to Italy with my mom. When I was 13 we had a visit at school from a humanitarian organisation, they were explaining the basics of education and human rights promotion in poor countries. I remember myself having a crisis, I threw a big tantrum, I was somehow scandalised by the idea that people may have right and freedoms and that they can protect them. After I managed to calm myself a friend just told me that I was acting wired and the realisation hit me hard, it was a catharsis, the moment I was born as a citizen of a free word. I have no idea how Russian society managed to cultivate in me this submissive slave mindset even if I was a child. Russian propaganda and the whole society structure does evrething in its power to kill any freedom of thought long before is born. Scary stuff. Russians in general don't know what is freedom and they deny it's mere existence
They're brainwashed, especially the older folk. That's what happens under a Communist State. Those at the top have lots of homes and lots of money all provided by the Russian people who do as they are told as comrades! It's laughable isn't it, the word comrad.. Used to live in Moscow 23 years ago. Love the place and almost visited my friends every year since then. All my friends are 50+ and they all now believe that Nazis are everywhere in Ukraine and that America is to blame for the "situation" . I met 2 of my Moscow friends in Kyiv 2 years ago, where they told how nice they think Kyiv was. Now just turned 180 deg !!! I will never go back to Moscow as I anyway have no friends there anymore.
The propaganda is really effective in both sides, is really important to be critical in these times and understand that the truth is always something in between. For example about the Nazis, it was well known and widely reported in the western media but now they choose to hide it as they need to side with them since Russia is a worst enemy. Like this report about it from BBC that I guess they forgot to delete m.ua-cam.com/video/hE6b4ao8gAQ/v-deo.html
It is very sad that you simply abandoned your friends with whom you had known for a long time because of your political views. That is why there will never be a real friendship between Americans and Russians here in Russia.
They think you're brainwashed from the west propaganda. Is there anything we can do to show the older Russians that Nazis are not like that, and how did Americans start this? Oh wait, they think we are NATO? And NATO was going to put missiles in Ukraine, at least that's what they were telling me. They don't understand that each of the post Soviet countries came begging to be part of NATO and the EU to be protected by the aggressive nature of communism and Putin regime? They have only one view, not a whole world of views into which we can see things, hence it's how we can tell our own government or media propaganda is being used on us.

Bad things happen when good people do nothing

And yes by revisit I also meant own up. USA and Russia are imperialist superpowers that need to be put in check by coalitions of smaller countries, like europeans, Africans and Asians. Europe needs their own defence force, without USA.
I realize that the people of Russia have never known true freedom, but the young citizens (those born in the 1990's and later) have never witnessed this soviet-era level of censorship and oppression. Only now are they gaining a true understanding of their government. Obviously- if the entire world is having an extreme reaction to something that Russia is reporting to their citizens as a humanitarian effort- something is amiss. Those who are willing to believe what their leaders are telling them just want things to go back to normal so they can resume their daily lives, but everything has changed forever (for all of us).
