I just tripped on this and wow....how cool is this ...I was at that show in the 1st row that night at the Opera House and got stuff signed at the bus afterwards..great show saw him several times over the years back then.Thanx for sharing take care
Leon is sounding as good as ever . Im from Oklahoma and heard " Back to the island " in 1976 as a wee child and been a huge fan ever since . It dont get no better than Leon Russell .
Having seen Leon just last week in a good sized room in Tahoe, I find it hard to believe this interview was from 2003!!! He seems so much younger and more vital now in 2015! WOW, the man is timeless, and tireless, played about 20 days this month. The band is him and three musicians now and he sounds GREAT! My favorite set was just him and the piano. The CD "Signature Songs" is just like live! Thank you Leon, for sharing your songs and stories with us for all these years! The feeling of instant intimacy at your show was palpable! And, no 👓 meant we could see your wonderful facial expressions! See you next time!
@TheBasenjiman Leon has some serious medical issues, he is sometimes in a wheelchair. Elton John is brilliant enough to realize what a talent Leon is, they've been on a world tour together. As far as "small" venues go, that's Leon. He loves his music, and does it wherever it's appreciated. Cate
Yes, very lucky Patsea111 - I think I've come to realize that Leon's reputation for being a man of few words is because seems to be a very private person. At first glance that might seem odd for someone who has "acted out his life on stages with 10,000 people watching" but it is true nonetheless. I would love to talk to him at greater length because I am sure he has great stories to tell and wisdom to impart. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction will be March 14th.
I feel like Leon got old before his time. And maybe bcse he struggled w/some health issues from when he was a young boy? But for instance, he is only 61 yrs old in this interview & I think due to the white hair & the clothes he wears, it makes him, imho, look about 10yrs older than he actually was! I just didn't want him to age so quickly - he was so beautiful & I wanted him to be here longer!! I only just discovered him a couple of years ago...
@@changstein ... that's debatable... are we talking hits etc ... the ASYLUM CHOIR recordings were very early .... he can also be heard vocally on Never Ending Song Of Love by Delaney Bonnie & Friends ua-cam.com/video/WCrZ5CN7ymc/v-deo.html
Had the privilege of seeing him in person Many Times! Always a thrill!!

Leon Russell has been my Idol for over 40 yrs. He's made me sing, made me cry,and made me a better person. Thanks for sharing this interview.
God bless Leon. What an incredible life of music he had.
Miss you and your great music.
That Lady’s and Gentlemen is a True Legend!

Best thing to ever come out of Tulsa OK. He made me want to quit my job at the Safeway store & play rock & roll.
I saw Leon in concert more than any other artist , while I enjoyed them all , his shows in the late 70's and early 80's were my favorites
Wouldn't you. With or w/o cocktails, he has done more lyrics than most read... An under-recognized music MAN.

Everybody has trouble remembering the words to hundreds of songs. You should get up on stage in front of thousands of people and try it sometime.
Thanks, tomspiritmist - It was a thrill for me!

Merci Leon. This must have been before his brain surgery.
Like a rubber neck giraffe you looked in my past
Also, Leon and Elton John will be on The Late Show with David Letterman this Wednesday, February 9th - Set the DVR!
Leon got his Urkel pants on, DAMN.
Legends should be unknown. Don't talk to kids.
what was the first song he was singing
+Joey Busche "Tight Rope", from the Carney album

The hearse drapery makes it.
he is not a nerd
I have noticed Leon uses a computer for his lyrics.. does he have trouble remembering the words or what?
@sprngh2o
Hey - inquiring minds want to know!

jogmas12 she was never in Sly’s band
@@peggykerby9608 Yes she was. She was part of Little Sister.
Yep. She was married to Leon from 1975 to 1980.

I think Mary destroyed Leon's heart.
