The theater was Lowes American. It was majestic in it's day. I remember the ushers and beauty of the theater, the huge gold stair case leading up to the balcony.. It should have been made a landmark. The last movie I took my son to see was Rango. It became a multiplex in the 90s.
Amazing story and history about the Parkchester neighborhood in the Bronx. The development of this community reminds me of a similar situation in my old hometown of Chicago - much smaller scale of development but sadly same pattern of discrimination in the early days (Cabrini-Green Project on the West Side). The Bronx is so fascinating, and I’ve really see this part of NYC contains eye opening history. Thanks Sifat.
Thank you so much for doing this video. It brought back memories of when I lived in Parkchester. I watch your channel. I just haven't commented. You have great content.
I rent a one bedroom here right in the center overlooking the oval and I pay 1000$ a month and that doesn't include electric water or anything I'm not sure how that stacks up with other Bronx areas but I really like it here definitely a more quite area then most...
Thanx for doing a walking tour of the neighborhood. Ive lived here twice. From 1999 to 2006, and now from 2021 with my wife. Some people have negative comments to say about the area, but they're completely wrong. The area is very quite and safe for the most part, this is still new york city. Almost 85% of the residents work and are middle class or upper middle class. If you ever come by early in the morning, all you see is droves of people walking to the subway station heading to work, or school. The complex is quite lovely especially in the summer time or during Christmas when they dress up the park in the oval.
Nice area. I went to school in Parkchester, P.S. 106. My mom used to take us to an italian restaurant on Metropolitan ave called Sylvios. Lots of great memories.
Lived for 25 years in Parkchester. The neighborhood has dramatically changed since 2016, in my opinion. I feel the population are increased, good stores have closed, the old movie theater is gone,etc...
I miss it too, I moved to Brooklyn just before lockdown(FEB 2020). Brklyn is not as charming or convenient as The Bronx. Only good thing is the area I'm in is quieter and safe.
Let me say as a preface that I'm white of Irish and Polish decent. I grew up just outside of Parkchester in the Stratton Park neighborhood. Your statement of "people of color" not being allowed in Parkchester is a bit of a stretch as even we from Stratton Park were not allowed to congregate in Parkchester at all. We could visit Macy's, Woolworth's directly opposite Macy's, the NY Public Library, formerly on East Ave and any of three movie theaters: The Loews American, The Circle, in the circle of the Subway station and The Palace, located just south of Tremont Ave. Many was the time I and friends were escorted out of Parkchester by the private Parkchester Police in their squad cars and dropped back at White Plains Road, which formed the boundary between Parkchester and Stratton Park. At Christmas time we could visit Santa's house, in the street area in front of Loews and also we could walk to Metropolitan Oval to see the Christmas display. So don't now try to imply that this was a racial issue as it was more economic. Parkchester was built as a middle-class apartment complex. If you were too poor you could not rent and if you were too rich also. Meantime, folks from the other side of the tracks, so to speak, too poor to live there were tolerated as long as we patronized the stores thereby supporting the expenses of running the complex.
I was watching the video and just noticed I was in this video. I am the man who you walked passed on Starling avenue. I had the red and black Jordan 23 basketball jersey and black and red Jordan 4’on.
Thank You for the Parkchester video and the history of this "SELF-CONTAINED COMMUNITY"!!!! More history information: PARKCHESTER (Bronx--Condo), INWOOD PARK TERRACE (Manhattan--COOP), and STYVESTANT TOWN (Manhattan--High Price Rental) were all created by the METROPOLITAN LIFE COMPANY (Insurance Co.), but are all under different ownership now; and all 3 communities look very much alike!!!! COOP City also in the Bronx, NY is another "SELF-CONTAINED COMMUNITY" very different from Parkchester (more shopping and restaurants!!!!
Thank you Sifat for showing this video of Parkchester,Bronx. It was very interesting and educational with the rich History of it. Thank you for sharing this.
Nice video!!! just to make clear the area from Starling Ave to the public school 106 is not part of Parkchester, they are considered part of the Castle Hill neighborhood.
Wow parkchester looks like modem road I remember when pot Chester was very sophisticated now it is just part of regular nothing different about if used to be a safe place to I don't know if it still is but wow has it changed and used to be the most beautiful part of the well not anymore
Great video. A real neighborhood, where you can walk where ever you need to go. It seemed to me, more people were wearing masks here than in Manhattan. Wonder why?
Very enjoyable walk in such a peaceful area, thank you for the local history. I especially loved the fountain, would be tempted to paddle my feet in it in this heat! 🥵
Sorry, but just not the same as many years ago. And the cheapest place to live ! You gotta be kidding me, it's not even cheap to live on the streets anymore.
In my country, 🇪🇪 Estonia, we live in small huts and raise a family of six children and wife within an area of 20 square feet. Long Live Estonia 🇪🇪. !!
Sir, You're making this ALL up. I'm SO upset with you. Bow? Did you mean borough.? In my country, Estonia 🇪🇪, we don't have boroughs. We have sections. Long live Estonia 🇪🇪.!!
If you're comfortable with a high crime rate and rampant drug infestation then this area is for you. One of the busiest police activities in all of the Bronx can be found here. Ranked 3rd in the usual suspect category. 🤔 Personally I wouldn't live there even if it was free.
@@chino7472 Chase Bank on the Circle been held up three times. Apple Bank around the Circle twice. The store that used to be open across from the train got held up once every two months. At least. Two shootings at Virginia Park one where they ran into Chase Bank. I can go on for any part of Parkchester proper. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for over 55 years. Police at the funeral homes on Unionport because of shootings. Please stop talking to me about crime in z Parkchester. I came home and cops had arrested two guys right outside my apartment.

If you come back to the Bronx can you go to Pelham Bay Park. That's by the last stop of the 6 train. Pelham Bay. I love going to that park.
Thank you so much for doing this video. It brought back memories of when I lived in Parkchester. I watch your channel. I just haven't commented. You have great content.
I lived in Parkchester for 14 years and I do miss it. I still stop by to go to doctor and dentist appts.
Thanks for that. I've never been up there, but I have been to Co-op City in Parkchester.
@Adwoa E. Bey Co-op City is not in Parkchester

That’s really affordable for a 1 bedroom! I’d move for that
Hey Brother what is the management company if you don’t mind me asking, I am thinking of

I remember that Macy's!! We used to come to the Bronx every summer to visit family. Haven't been back since 2004. I miss visiting!
I love New York its a whole world in itself....so big so beautiful no other state like it...Empire State

I walked a lot of those streets; will likely dream about the building tonight.
I worked a summer job at a dry cleaners shop in Parkchester when I was 19 years old. This video brings back great memories.

Completely untrue description of the complex.
There are a lot of neighborhoods that are far worse but yes there is too much crime and drugs
That’s a lot of bull your talking! Your talking about the area surrounding Parkchester it still a better neighborhood then many in the Bronx!

You sound racist
It’s amazing how you enjoy sharing America’s worst history. You’ve done it on several other vids.. makes us think you have an agenda.
There are no private homes only apartment buildings.
Did anyone mug you of course not
How much is rent at parkchester
It was mostly Irish back in the day that's what I heard
