4:22 Okay, but why TF would that company need ANY of that to do what it's trying to do? Email address? Fine, so the services know what messages to send where. I get that. But Address, Name, and Photo? The hackers weren't the ones doing the shady shit to a company here. The shady people and the company were one in the same. Pretty obvious this product was designed to be a trojan horse from the start and trying to pin the blame on "hackers" so the original criminals; the company, can play the victim, is even more vile.
Name if you have multiple children and multiple bears (most likely). Photo for the sake of serving the same purpose as profile pictures do - yet again, to tell apart who's who. Address was either a credit card thing, or a way to identify the correct recipient bear.
My theory is there were no hackers, they got caught and leaked it themselves so the attention would be on negligence and hacking and not purposeful wrongdoing
Aaand I was right, they got caught, the person tried to warn the company, company did jack sht and now theyre claiming they got hacked and leaked when in reality it was just Sitting there

Why does every toy and appliance these days need to be connected to the Internet? It’s like they’ve manufactured too many CPUs and have to integrate them wherever possible.
It's the future! We need to stay up-to-date! After TV died in 1947, and we discovered that our vacuum cleaner give us cancer in 1966, and the internet failed in 1996 and the UA-cam failure of 2006, we are in constant search for new technology which will finally makes our dream come true: living like the Jetsons. Or maybe there are enough gullible idiots who repeat the lastest catchphrases: blockchain technology (prominently used in Porsche cars), the cloud (prominently used in bears), AI (prominently used to fake pornographic videos), quantum (used in advertisement and speeches which need to sound "modern"). Sadly, "cybersecurity" is not a buzzword (unless you count the advertisements which claim that their product achieves cybersecurity through use of blockchain technology (Porsche), the cloud (Microsoft), AI (I think it was Intel) and quantum computing (IonQ)). "Television won't be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night." - Darryl Zanuck, 20th Century Fox, 1946. "Nuclear powered vacuum cleaners will probably be a reality within 10 years." - Alex Lewyt, President of the Lewyt Vacuum Cleaner Company, 1955. "I predict the Internet will soon go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse." - Robert Metcalfe, founder of 3Com, 1995. "There's just not that many videos I want to watch." - Steve Chen, CTO and co-founder of UA-cam, 2005. Bonus fact: "Before man reaches the moon, your mail will be delivered within hours from New York to Australia by guided missiles. We stand on the threshold of rocket mail." - Arthur Summerfield, U.S. Postmaster General, 1959. Yup, intercontinental ballistic missiles delivering...mail. And you worry about teddy bears!
@purpleturtle0-0 basically the exact same thing with a v-tech learning laptop (not sure if its that specifically), if you look for v-tech data breach you can find a video essay just like this one explaining it.
The sad part is they won't because they literally don't care if kids or families get hurt/get spied on The same goes for all these nannycams etc People can hack them and HAVE hacked them before But nope its "convenient" to be able to watch your home from work, who cares if half a million people are also doing the same on some shady website somewhere? Who cares when the company is making millions and brushing these incidents under the rug?
Well then why buy these then, you know how to keep this shit secure, change the password to a good one and that's it! all this screams is I'm a moron who can't change the device's default password and yet still buy IoT and internet connected products
Exactly. It’s cute and the image of toys in the trash or landfill is extremely triggering to me, no need to throw away the whole doll. Just take out the bad parts. It’s not the bear’s fault. 😢
Oh man, I was a kid in 2015 and was one of the popular ages for the Cloudpet toy, I’m very glad in those years my parents didn’t know or even buy that Cloudpet toy. Spiral inc messed up big time, it’s just plain sad how they ignored warnings then when bad stuff happens they say no one told them. God bless Troy, he was actually looking out for the kids.

I used a toy like this in my thesis about the poor security if Internet of Things items but I believe mine was a pet that could talk to your kids interesting to see another one out there
An irony if you will to cloud pets, is that if they had done their job properly so that all end points were secure as possible; it would have been too expensive a toy to justify buying at the price it would require to justify making. It was a doomed idea from the get go.
@@DanTDMJace Sure, you can add a password. But those are easily brute forced like... most of the time. There are exceptions, but those are mostly relegated to the really obscure passwords; and encryption level stuff. But yeah, adding a password, and 2FA system no less, would not have cost them a lot of money per se. That said, the level of security they should have had going on these, would have included/involved the most up to date encryption algorithms to ensure some margin of safety against at least the laziest hackers and criminal element. But that sort of thing requires a bit more computational oomph. Not impossible, but the stuffed animal would likely need to be bigger to accomdate the extra tech properly so it doesn't just look like a computer with a fursuit.

I literally have my blue bunny cloudpets stuffed animal across my room right now. The only voice message that we put on was "(Dad:) I love you, Buttercup. (Me:) I love you too, Buttercup!" Buttercup was our pet cat (sadly ran away) and we couldn't make it recorded another message after that, so it just named Buttercup after that. How crazy.. Not gonna get rid of it though, lol! One of my only recordings of me and my dad when I was little I have. Crazy story though
It’s so sad . This guy doesn’t get many views , he deserves more . We need to spread awareness about the things he talks about . Kids and teenagers are so naive and especially since technology is so advanced now . Share this with other people please . And to the UA-camr , keep doing what your doing , you’ve really opened my eyes ever since I started watching your channel 👍
the theory behind this was absolutely amazing especially with 2020 happening after this item came out. Its just sad they forced people to give up so much information and no protection behind it. the ability to hug a soft plush while hearing the voice of a loved one who cant be there with the child is just priceless but something as creepy as a child picture is were the problems started.
I don't usually leave comments like this, but I can't help but notice how well produced and written this video is! It makes it so much more engaging, and I'm definitely gonna have to check this channel out more.
I always think of the quote from, weirdly enough, Harry Potter. “Don’t trust anything that thinks for itself if you can’t see where it keeps its brain”. In the age of the internet that brain can be stored anywhere on the planet, or loudly broadcasting information it has for anyone to rummage through.
i had this when i was younger, i didnt experience the hackings but we did trash both of the ones i bought bc both malfunctioned big time, i believe the unicorn particularly would just make loud screeching at random, woke me up once at night horrifying
There is a point that I think you get wrong. Even if they gave the data back to the company...the hackers would still have a copy and nothing guarantees that it would be deleted. It can still be used for nefarious purposes. I think that's a bit of misinformation to say....If I owned the company I wouldn't pay it as even if I lose the data nothing of value is lost as a company and since there are probably copies owned by multiple people deleting it won't do anything @17:00
I have one of these. My mother bought it for my daughter about 2 years ago - new in box. Never worked of course. I knew the company was gone and that it wouldn't work, but my mother didn't. I had no idea it was this until I saw this video (although I did hear about the story when it broke originally).
I had one of these toys! It was the black cat and I used it to tell my mom I love her and listen to this one song that I really liked. Eventually my mom stopped using the app when she found out about the security issues and I stopped using the stuffed animal when the batteries started to die and made the song and voice message still saved on the pet sound like something from hell. It’s now buried somewhere in a toy box to never see the light again.
Couldn't they just store voice messages on the toy rather than on a server, and if they need to replay the message using a phone or whatever they can just get the message from the toy or have it stored on the phone. Like other comments said they definitely planned on selling that data.
I actually still have mine. I called him Ranger and he is the black and white cat. Luckily he never worked and i never sent or received any messaged. And i can vouch for this, he really is very soft
I remember my oldest brother was in the navy overseas and I was like 9, so I asked my mom to look into getting this so I could communicate with him, but it never happened, however we did do biweekly facetime calls so that was nice, and we weren't spied on that way
I used to own one of these when they first came out. I only liked it bc I thought the cat looked cute and was too lazy to set it up. Guess laziness is the key to keeping data safe? 😭
They dont even need a cloud for toys like this, Local storage that automatically deletes data works the same. (You can program it to delete 3 times so theres also no backup possible.)
People might want to get used to no privacy because this type of thing is inevitable. It's basically already here thanks to our smart phones. In a decade or so, the government will listen to everything to say; record everywhere you go; and watch everything you do online.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

3:40 thats actually a cute idea, like lets say you have a long distance friendship and you could send messages through a cute little teddy bear that you gave them. Thats adorable. The execution wasn’t adorable.
They have a night light that does that! Still wouldn’t trust it tho…
@MsTinkerbelle87 Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how you'd do it, but it's a nice idea
I remember these, I work on the road. We looked into these. We saw it as a security risk.
Selling data.
Aaand I was right, they got caught, the person tried to warn the company, company did jack sht and now theyre claiming they got hacked and leaked when in reality it was just Sitting there
I think it was more of the fact that they probably where just loose with the data and would save it maybe for features or scraped features and then never delete it because they where too lazy The whole thing seems to be a mess.
2:22 "Bitcoin can't be traced." Oh, it can. It can be traced. Well, unless the hacker is smart of course. They'd have request XMR or use Wasabi Wallet or something to avoid that.
This was back then when BTC was not being actively monitored and regulated by the feds.
@@ThatoneNB12 I see, thanks for the clarification. I didn't even know that this comment popped off haha :)
But I think they'd still monitor it, no? Maybe they just didn't clarify they were tracking it.
But even then thanks to you mate.
I'm pretty sure the government created Bitcoin 😂
@@ThatoneNB12it's not because the feds can monitor it that it can be traced....it can be traced because it's on the blockchain. I think saying it can't be traced is wrong.....and more it's easier to obfuscate would be more appropriate.

This is why toy companies need to stop making these toys because you don't know if someone with ill intentions will hack the toy.
The sad part is they won't because they literally don't care if kids or families get hurt/get spied on
The same goes for all these nannycams etc
People can hack them and HAVE hacked them before

I used a toy like this in my thesis about the poor security if Internet of Things items but I believe mine was a pet that could talk to your kids interesting to see another one out there
An irony if you will to cloud pets, is that if they had done their job properly so that all end points were secure as possible; it would have been too expensive a toy to justify buying at the price it would require to justify making. It was a doomed idea from the get go.
adding a password would not cost that much money. i dont understand why they didnt just do it.

There is a point that I think you get wrong. Even if they gave the data back to the company...the hackers would still have a copy and nothing guarantees that it would be deleted. It can still be used for nefarious purposes. I think that's a bit of misinformation to say....If I owned the company I wouldn't pay it as even if I lose the data nothing of value is lost as a company and since there are probably copies owned by multiple people deleting it won't do anything

i used to be absolutely obsessed with those games that's awesome
You know what this was a nice idea and of course had to get ruined by people using the wrong way
I had one of these toys!

I remember my oldest brother was in the navy overseas and I was like 9, so I asked my mom to look into getting this so I could communicate with him, but it never happened, however we did do biweekly facetime calls so that was nice, and we weren't spied on that way
Bro really talked with “Confess-A-Bear”
I think Troy should’ve not let people know about the vulnerability because the company wouldn’t care anyways
