I figured (with Scary Math) that a Boon (best 2 out of 3D) is similar to boosting the average roll on 2d6 by +1.46 so the average roll is now 8.46 or so instead of 7, and a Bane (worst 2 out of 3D) depresses the average 2d6 roll by the same amount to about 5.54 average. But a Boon does not wipe out the possibility of rolling a 2 or a 3, it just makes those rarer. Likewise, a Bane does not make 11 or 12 impossible, just rarer.
If you just subtract 3 from a D6 roll you get 1 = -2, 2 = -1, 3 = 0, 4 = 1, 5 =2, 6 = 3; which is not the same as a D3. You probably mean that you subtract 3 if the roll is greater than 3.

You had me at Wave Motion Gun!
I actually do D3 as -3 so 4=1, 5=2, 6=3.
That's just how I think of it.
i mean hey, if it works, it works

@@Escylon yup, that's what I mean.
