  • - Disneyland's opening day was a disaster.
    - Disneyland's opening day was a rousing success that changed the face of the entertainment industry forever.
Both of these things are true, depending on your perspective. After pulling an all-nighter to get as much finished for "opening day" as possible, Walt watches the sun rise on July 17, 1955. What follows is the special, invitation-only event to celebrate the park's opening. The park will only open for half the day, and no one will pay to enter. ABC will broadcast the star-studded special ceremony that has been rehearsed for weeks live, the largest live broadcast at this point in history.
In the hours to come, Disney will face triumphs, tragedies, and tests of his patience. He will, with no sleep in the past 24 hours, speak to an estimated quarter of the nation's population. And he will finally realize the dream we have built up to over the past six episodes. Enjoy this trip through Opening Day, aka Black Sunday.
In this seven part series, we explore the experiences that shaped Walt Disney's desire to build his own magical world, and how he eventually came to realize that dream.

It made me feel good to see what and how Walt overcame those obstacles on opening day. It sure didn’t stop the crowds and Disney becoming the most recognized company/ theme park in the world. I would have loved to shake Disney’s hand. And thanks for your wealth of information and bringing this format to us. Job very well done indeed!

These are beautifully produced, educational and entertaining. As a child of the 50's, Disneyland was the one annual trip my family always took together. You have brought back many fond memories. Thanks for the quality work.

Thank you so much for the compliments. We'll be re-releasing the entire series as a single video on the first Friday of next month to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of releasing the first episode. Long-form videos seem to do pretty well on UA-cam, so maybe this will help the series find that wider audience.

    Question 🙋‍♀️ so Disneyland’s opening was a disaster on July 17, 1955?

By some measures, it was a disaster. By others, it was a huge success. Disney built the entire park in 1/5th the time it took the modern company to build the Tron coaster in Florida. And (almost) all the rides worked. It had over 1,000,000 visitors in less than a year. So while that one day may have had problems, I think the common idea that it was a "disaster" is a bit exaggerated.
