This song was her comeback hit and her first hit as a solo artist. She left Ike ten years before and the music industry wouldn't touch her because she was too old and considered a "has been". But Tina didn't give up and didn't stop. She took every gig she could get and even languished in Vegas for a few years before blowing the doors off the music industry. This song became a #1 worldwide hit and started the second half of her career when he was 45. And the second half of her career (as a solo artist) FAR eclipsed the first half with Ike. She became HUGE in the 80s and 90s. HBO has a great documentary that came out last year called TINA that tell her whole story and serves as her farewell to her fans, definitely worth watching. She's in her 80s now and not in the greatest of health but she is LIVING LEGEND with so many great songs to explore from the early 60s to 00's. Wave that TINA flag, y'all...she is a bonafide survivor, thriver and ICON.

In the 80's if you were in your 40's you were considered AINCIENT lol. The Travelling Wilbury's were like pensioners and if you look at their ages at the time they were only in their 40's!

100% on the money. And remember her hair is always a,wig because of an accident at a hairdresser when she was still on tour with One. I went to see her live when she went on the What's Love tour in 1993. There were these twenty year old guys behind us screaming "Tina!! Let us be your love slaves!"

This is the iconic rebirth of Tina Turner who was already iconic. She was free from Ike Turner and she owned her name, her music. She shot ALL of her naysayers down who said that she was done and that they didn't want to do anything new with her. On top of that she was a consummate performer that slayed people more than half her age on stage. I love Tina Turner. I was so happy to see her as a black woman on MTV with countless hits for me as a black girl absolutely needing that representation.

And she looked hardly any different in her final concerts at the age of 70 - and made her 20-something backup dancer look shabby in comparison. Looks like her concert exercise has kept he in great shape - never mind having the luck of great genes!
Favorite story about her - a friend talked he into going with her to a pilates class. 2 hours later, the instructor was wiped out, and Tine had hardly broken a sweat!

I came to this video the day after Tina's passing was announced. She had a long and stunning career, and worked her butt off for it. The thing that sticks in my mind is the reputation she had for treating her band and crew like family. That's a trademark of the best lead performers. She may be gone, but she left a legacy few can match.

Tina Turner launched one of the greatest comebacks in music history. This started in 1983 when she teamed up with 'Heaven 17' to sing 'Let's Stay Together' (Al Green Song). She then basically ruled the 80s and 90s.

Around the time her "Private Dancer" album came out, she also did the duet "It's Only Love" with Bryan Adams, which was included on his "Reckless" album.

Tina Turner is the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll". She has spanned over 6 decades of music. She started out with her husband Ike & had some great hits such as "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "River Deep-Mountain High", "Proud Mary" & "Nutbush City Limits". But she had even bigger hits when she went solo such as "What's Love Got To Do With It", "Better Be Good To Me", "Private Dancer", "We Don't Need Another Hero (from Thunderdome)", "Typical Male", "The Best", "I Don't Wanna Fight", "GoldenEye" (James Bond movie) etc. Turner also released a duet with Bryan Adams "It's Only Love".

Did you see her gorgeous legs? Along with her impressive vocals, lively dance moves, and iconic hair, Tina Turner's legs have become one of her signature features. Often flaunting them in sparkly mini dresses on stage, the star's pins were insured for $3.2 million and she even dedicated a song to them in 1994.

The beautiful part is watching you guys react to this, close to 40 years after I caught it for the first time on late-night TV… and damned if Tina doesn’t rattle my cage EVERY bit as hard now as then. What’s even more amazing is that she’s often said she never cared much for the song itself, and yet she still gave it everything she had. A vocal performance for the ages. Oh yeah, and them LEGS.😍🎶😊

This was the song that, in 1984, put her back on the musical map at the ripe old age of 45. She proceeded to own the world for the next twelve years. You should check out her cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", "(Simply) The Best", "Typical Male", and my personal fave, "We Don't Need Another Hero" (from the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, a film where she actually starred as the villainess! Add that to your movie list!) And you like the hair? Into her SEVENTIES, she had the best legs in the business!

Tina's hair is/was her own creation. She's always said she's never been an rnb/blues fan. She's a rocker and she has the ultimate rock voice. Plus Tina is from the 60s and the 60s kinda came back and was a huge influence i think throughout the whole decade. So she already had that vocal background. Most voices in the 80s are huge voices, cuz most of those artists were influenced/born in the 60s.
Her voice kinda reminds me of the Queen of the Blues Koko Taylor. One of those supreme Blues voices. Tina has definitely got a whole lotta that.

Well, you guys wanted some back-ground, here goes. This was the first hit song that Tina could call her own since she left Ike. After the divorce, Tina was stuck doing old songs and disco songs in her Vegas act for many years. If she did appear on TV, it was old songs, silly skits, and talk shows was of course about Ike. My Mom loved her but people my age; frankly had written her off as a has-been. It was only after Tina began working with music producer Roger Davies, who wisely listened to her, that Tina found her OWN sound. In 1984 when Tina was 44 years old, she released the album "Private Dancer' and made history. No one had ever revived their career like she did. In 1985, the Private Dancer Tour came to my hometown and my friend surprised me with tickets. Well, I was b!+@#ing the whole night...about I didn't want to see my mother's fav...etc. and so on. It took 1 song for me to shut up and another half of a song to get me on my feet screaming. And now all I can say is that Tina Turner, for the next 25 - 30 years danced and rocked my soul. And I still go back and watch her vids. and live performances. She had something with Ike....but TINA alone...OUTSTANDING. Her look was Tina's alone. The last time I saw her live in concert she was well into her sixties, and she still looked 40 something. Tina is also known for her beautiful legs, which she went out of her way to feature and emphasize in her performances and videos.

This is one of those songs that really makes me wish I was stuck in the 80's. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic right now. Tina had several great songs in the 80's. My favorite is "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)." You also have to listen to her rock out with Bryan Adams on "It's Only Love."

Great reaction to the one and only Ms. Turner. If you haven't done so yet, I'd love it if you went waaay back to the great Peggy Lee, with "Fever". (no, I'm not quite that old, but I love music from all eras and Peggy Lee can sell it with a look and a note. Thanks, cee

The album Private Dancer by Tina Turner, from which this song hails, is one of those rare and special albums where every single song is awesome. What's Love Got to Do With It, Private Dancer, I Can't Stand the Rain, I Might Have Been Queen, and every other song on the album is outstanding.

I love Tina Turner, her style is beyond compare, but as much as I love her music, and love her as a beautiful human being. I love her deep spiritual nature. The reason I mention it is there's music by Tina along with 30 children from different cultures, and nations that have made some music featuring the religion of Buddhism Christianity Hinduism Judaism Islam, and Sikhism called Beyond, and Beyond children. It's the most beautiful music and mantras you can imagine the album constituted a remarkable shift in Tina's career as it was her first involvement in a spiritual project I recommend you listen to it I believe you'll enjoy it

Turner set two records when this song went to #1 on the Hot 100 on September 1, 1984. At 44, she became the oldest female solo artist ever to top the chart, a remarkable feat in an industry that prizes youth, especially among female singers.
