- Vietnam says it is ready to hold discussions with the Philippines regarding Manila's claims to an extended continental shelf in the South China Sea. Philippine assertions overlap with those from China and Vietnam. While clashes between Beijing and Manila have been high profile and sometimes violent, the Philippines and Vietnam have relied on diplomacy to settle their dispute. Buena Bernal reports.
Vietnam and Philippines are both ASEAN members, we can solve our problems in a friendly way and with respect.

Although a judgement from a tribunal that is not internationally recognised has given the judgement to say that these shoals are within the EEZ of the Philippines but this judgement also stress that it is still Chinese Territory.

The indigenous people of the Philippines have been present since the Austronesians arrived. Chinese fishermen have not been present since time immemorial. They are not bases but sites for defensive purposes against invasion. What else the Philippines president do if the ASEAN members do not support him but to ask the help of US, our powerful ally whom we have a treaty, MDT, VFA. Because of this, china cannot just occupy our territories and islands at will.
All ASEAN countries, not only Vietnam, with territorial claims and disputes should engage in discussions to resolve these matters conclusively.
Take for example the pact between PH and Indonesia defining their maritime borders (signed in 2014). Disputes can be resolved through diplomatic means.

Philippines occupied the NE Cay and SW Cay in 1968. Vietnam recaptured the SW Cay from the Philippines in 1975.

Vietnam is claiming almost all of the Spratly Islands based on the flimsy excuse that the French explored those rocks for Vietnam. The French have explored many parts of the world including the Asian waters. We don’t think they explored other places for Vietnam. We don’t think the French will acquiesce with them that they explored the Spratly Islands for them.
On the other hand, the Philippines is claiming extension of their EEZ based on geographic features as being part of their own continental shelf, and where no legal owners can claim legitimate ownership. China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia have their legitimate 200 nmiles as per UNCLOS which do not touch the Philippine extension claim.

Imperial Britain knew these were China's islands. Americans knew these were China's islands. Imperial Spain illegally transferred/sold some of these islands to US. Then US illegally transfer it to Philippine. Imperial Japan said hell with everyone, Japan invaded these islands and kicked out everybody. So, allied forces finally kicked out Japan in WWII, and Japan had to return all the islands to China.
They all knew that these islands were China’s sovereign islands, but they all bullied and stole from China. Eventually, they all admit that these were China’s islands.
China gave Vietnam some of these islands. But later on Vietnam thought it was not enough, so Vietnam reoccupied lots and lots of China’s islands, and still occupying several dozen islands. There've already been territorial disputes between ASEAN states in the past that could serve as models like in the case of Indonesia vs Philippines over Miangas island which was awarded to the former at The Hague in 1906 though this was before the creation of the bloc. In more modern times the Pedra Branca dispute between Malaysia and Singapore which was settled in the ICJ back in 2008.
