Celtic art is unique, but I get a bit pissed off, that Celts are always painted as barbarians, they were much more then that, I'm proud of my ancestors!

Good for you, I totally agree, the Celts had so many amazing skills and resources, I get so fed up of the documentary makers constantly, referring to them as uncivilised barbarians.

one of the best documentaries ive seen...The ancient Celts obviously believed in the afterlife and they also had an amazing sense of humor which is reflected in their coinage and artwork in general.......I think they had a great distaste for the city life and preferred their rustic remote rural life over the so called civilized world of the romans and greeks.....These qualities and beliefs made them physically and spiritually stronger and thus not easily dominated by other cultures....

My first encounter with Celts in literature was the Asterix comic books ;)

Military organization counted for a lot more in the hands of Julius Caesar than greatness of stature.
Caesar recounts that his Roman soldiers were particularly frightened of the great height of the Germanics who were probably a bit taller than the Celts.

Hi Hogwash - I do appreciate your comment. I came here looking for a documentary to watch about my interests - I am reading the Mabinogion, and the more you study its texts, the deeper and wiser seem the the people who wrote it... you have only to look at the exquisite little horses on their coins to know that these were no 'barbarians'. You may have seen a recent book called The Ancient Paths, which is a fascinating exploration of just how brilliant these people were at engineering and geographical science.

SCOTS are Irish tribe Scotti who migrated. Welsh & Irish or Cymraeg/Cymri/Cimbri/Cimri as are the words we use for ourselves in different Celtic areas are known as Celts or Keltoi to others. We are Cimmerians, an Aryan tribe from the Pontic Caspian Steppe.

many armies prefer their soldiers clean shaven or bald because it gives a clean look. Since ancient times many western armies have preferred this. Thought I have seen that many eastern armies are quite the opposite. Indian and Chinese and many other Asian have preferred long hair and beards.

They were advanced. They handled metalwork incredibly good. It takes so much skills to produce on of these gold ornaments. They knew of wheel wagons and cavalry. They were furiously passionate and emotional. They didn't construct architecture like the mediterraneans. They didn't need it and wood tradition was everywhere in Europe. They were not city dwellers but more natural woodsmen.
The question is about the writing, they should have realized it's value but no-one took it on. Personal glory, favor of Gods and afterlife was their values. They sacked Rome but didn't conquer it, what if the had? Vercingetorix as emperor over Europe and the mediterranean, romans as soldiers..

Despite the narrator's stupid script describing the Celts as cruel savages 'obsessed' with war (yeah right, the Romans were a peaceful lot and not the precise, warfaring machine we know), the professors interviewed try to give a more objective view. Anyway, I'm 15 minutes into it and I'm not enjoying it. For good, insightful, well informed documentaries try and find some from the BBC. There are quite a few on YT and a whole nother experience.
Anyway, thanks to Blurallis for the time and trouble to upload it.

We Celtic-Portuguese also feel "insulted by this Biased-Saxon False Video/Audio". I must agree death is an esoteric experience. It's a nice thought to believe that some kind of afterlife awaits us, but death is a one time experience, and that experience can't be carried back into our world. I can be pretty spiritual at times, but some days I flip to the other side of the fence. I view these kinds of questions/problems as a great source of inspiration and creativity. I just don't tolerate people preaching their religion as the only one that is correct.

I believe they may have been highlighting the difference between voluntary human sacrifice (where the person is killed ritually by another but willingly) and forced human sacrifice (where the victim is murdered ritually). The former is very difficult to understand in modern societies.

Caesar states that the southeastern British tribes were ruled by descendants of the Belgae, explaining the fact that Belgic tribal names were found in Britain, for instance the Atrebates, and even the Menapii who were recorded in Ireland by 2ndC CE by Greco-Egyptian geographer Ptolemy as the Manapi and from whom Co. Fermanagh is possibly named, possibly even also the Isle of Man (once known as Menapia/Monavia):

The Roman soldiers, like the Greek soldiers before them, were clean shaven, which followed the example of the soldiers of Alexander the Great. All unshaven warriors were automatically called barbarians because of their beards. Barbarian simply meant bearded. Our word "barber" is derived from "barbarian" (bearded one). To this day, modern armies observe the practice of shaving the heads of enlisted men by a "barber" (one who shaves off beards).

and to be honest the vast majority of celtic human sacrifice lore comes from their enemy of enemies, julius ceaser who aparently while leading a war against them was privy to what would be the secret ceremonies of the secret druid priesthood. Most of what we know comes from very few sources, and maybe only one was not biased towards them. Caeser most certainly was. The celts where a private people to outsiders.

You didn't acknowledge the existence of it. You advocate it and BELIEVE that there exists in the universe an "authority" that has the right to take someone's physical life from them without just cause (the only just cause is self defence and even then the intention should not be to take life). You BELIEVE that it is your responsibility to follow unjust orders from these so-called authorities.

Out of date, certainly not! Barry Cunliffe's theory is completely wrong: it is based on the surviving Celtic languages...He thinks that where Celtic languages survived, that was the birthplace of Celyic civilisation... He just forgets that languages easily vanish...Celtic languages vanished from what is present dayTurkey (the Galatians lived around Ankara and were there long before the Turks!!!), Hungary, Bohemia( the land of the Boii) Austria, South and Western Germany, Northern Italy, France, Spain , Portugal and Brittain...The Gauls forgot their language and started to learn Latin: probably due to christianisation: the mass was in latin...The Bretons of French Brittany were just invaders who brought their language in western Brittany only:Breton was never spoken in Nantes and Rennes, the 2 Breton capitals!!! And he should know and think about it: even today, Breton is hardly spoken in French Brittany, Gaelic in Scotland,and... Even in Wales and Ireland they speak more often English than Welsh or Gaelic!!!! I think that Germanic languages and Latin moved from east to west and wiped out celtic languages, except in the last westrn remote recesses!!!

    • @JackFknTwist1
      @JackFknTwist1 7 років тому

      I prefer Barry Cunliffe's theory.
He addresses the issue o the Galatians of Turkey , near Ankara, but his overall theory of the Atlantic people speaking similar languages hold s good. It isn't that the Celtic languages survived in the west, they developed along the Atlantic, which is backed up by recent discoveries in DNA........that the DNA of the ancient Atlantic people still is the major art of the DNA in the modern Irish people.
The Celtic languages may not have survived in the central European countries.......who knows ?
But you cannot say that they were 'forgotten'......or vanished.

That you and people who believe as you do buy into the self-given (false) authority that the archons peddle is the only thing perpetuating the lie on our planet. french and spaniard people still celtic? if you are talking about the genetics you mean the genes of the native people who once practiced the celtic culture before the roman conquest right? you deffinetly will find some remnands of their dna in modern people depending on where they live. but how much of it does it need until you say someone is celtic or more correct: belongs to a certain group of people who once practiced celtic culture? french and spaniards are probably as much celtic as they are roman and whatever came after them. maybe even less celtic. who knows? and you will definetly find some of these genes in west and south germany.there were celts in germany too you know. so until their is no threshold many of todays germans would also be " of celtic origin".

But in stating a fallacy as a fact (in this case that governments have the right to take life) you imply a belief as it is impossible to know a fallacy.

Scots were Scythians. Hence 'Scots' etymologically cognates with 'Scyts'.

Im from Celtic heritage but this show started to get on my nerves when the chubby lady with the lisp seems to make huge assumptions about history and speak them like fact. Irritating as hell. Maybe I need a coffee and try again but I dont think I can handle an hour of that chubby lisp

And Christian or not, wouldn't you agree that a religion advocating human sacrifice and mounting heads on pikes is barbaric and brutal?

I'd rather have my perspective than yours. I frankly can't figure yours out you seem to just like arguing for the sake of it.

It's your responsibility to murder if ordered by a "higher authority"??? Wow...we humans are not going to make it. What childish ignorance. If one's conscience (or lack there of) uses this sort of reasoning you might want to consider the possibility that you are a psychopath.

The island you refer to was called Hy Brasil and it dissapeared at the end of the last ice age.Your statement loses all credibility when you talk of alien wars on earth. Not sure what University you went to but while history is written by the victors and not the pure truth there as never been a culture or 6 cultures who ran the world. Mankind did travel the planet long before most historians believe but society was much less technical

You contradict yourself. Do you think before speaking? You say they "blindly followed the word of corrupt Popes", but these Popes were an authority at the time which made it their "civic duty" and "responsibility" to partake in the murders by your reasoning. The murders were done in God's name. God is a concept used by those popes to claim authority.

  • @techtronicman1

Nah you're describing ritual suicide not human sacrifice. Human sacrifice is defined as murder so it must be done by someone else to be human sacrifice. There really, honestly, truly is a legally defined line between ritual suicide and human sacrifice (ritual murder). If you didn't know that then do you honestly expect me to believe you know what you're talking about at all? I don't believe you have any idea what Abrahamic religions teach. Do some reading then try again.

A lot of ignorance exists about what Celtic means. It was a culture like European culture. It was never a race so talking about genetics and Celts is meaningless.

Wow, such liberal use of the word "barbaric". As if severed heads and battle where something strange. What about public executions in Tudor England? Drawing and quartering? Most definitely barbaric. The show lacks in cultural relativism.

No there's no contradiction. If God himself were to order a people to go to war with Islam in his name, then yes they were all killing in the name of God. But it wasn't God speaking it was corrupt men in power so they were fighting in the name of men under the delusion that it was for God. There is a difference and if you can't see it then frankly I'll keep my perspective and can care less about yours.
