It was somehow more 'authentic' then and less corporate. They put a LOT of money into the park and have built some amazing rides. But it's gotten so big, so crowded, and so overwhelming today I think ..... And, of course, I was in Jr High and High School in the 80's and early 90's and I'm in my mid 40's now - probably also has something to do with it! lolol
@@MaximusX67 i disagree with the more crowded part, I recall pretty much every Saturday waiting for most of the big rides for over an hour. Even mine ride would be 45 minutes to an hour wait, on a regular basis.
These videos are a wonderful escape from the crazy world we live in today. Times were simpler. And the ones I loved the most were still alive. Ah, those were the days.
TRUE STORY: I was the first person (of the public) to ride Demon Drop when it first opened at Cedar Point.. The park was open at 9am, but it was raining that morning, and the staff were telling people that they "did not know when they would get all clear to ride", so little by little, people kept leaving the line... So I just kept moving up til I was first on. I got on my own car, and got to the top. There was a guy sitting at the top who said they were in "manual mode" (so each step happened with different switches). Then he said: "Okay, so you're gonna here this click..", and the second he said that - I FELL SCREAMING!! HAHA.. Fantastic. :) This is rare video of the Demon Drop experience - thanks for sharing.
I want to sincerely thank you for posting this Cedar Point footage. I grew up going annually to the Point, and I worked there my first of three summers the year this was filmed. I wore that red & blue uniform! Have had many jobs since then, but that place has been my favorite place to work. I retain memories of the sounds, the smells, the tastes, the sights... I wish I could go back!
I was 10 when this video was taken and the older I get the more nostalgic I get for these times - no cell phones, no social media, not worrying about terrorism or COVID-19. But I digress. I guess everything just seems better looking back on it. Oh, and the earthquake, pirate ride, and avalanche run. Good times. Damn I'm old.
Demon Drop still kicking ass in 2023. I actually chickened out of demon drop when I was little and my next time back to cedar point it was gone. Happy I was able to redeem myself this year by riding it at Dorney park !
What's funny is that on the Gemini, no one is high-fiving each other from across the trains and everyone is holding on the bars for dear-life!!! No one with arms up in the air? Anyway, this brings back memories, I was in high school in 1984 and spent many summers there in the 80's. Thanks for posting....
Same .... always been my favorite at Cedar Point! Magnum XL is up there too - love the slow climb and cresting way above Lake Erie on that ride! Such a great view up there at 200ft! But Gemini was ALWAYS so fun, fast, and easy to get on it over and over again! Think we rode it something like 8 times in a row one trip there, just getting off the ride, getting right back in line, and getting right back into another train heading for the top! I always loved the Corkscrew too (RIP), even though the sometimes long wait time was not worth the 45 second ride!
Love this!!! I remember coming here at the age of 8 in 1984. Very sedimental to me however I have noticed throughout the years Cedar Point's become less family oriented and more corporate 😒
Cedar Point has been very successful, leading the industry with top flight investments. White Water Landing was fun, but was it as good as Maverick? Of course not.
I was on the tranportation train and I saw the part of the island that was used back when the park war a kiddie ride place. There are remains of rides and I think I saw the seats for the huss
I love how this began as news footage of the "Demon Drop" being temporarily closed, but ended up being a bunch of BITCHEN clips of Cedar Point generally at that time. Dumb Fact: There's a non-zero chance of me being there! LOL.
Holy shit I didn't know the witches wheel was that old, and was that log ride white water landing?? I miss that one so badly, almost as much as I miss disaster transport
Never had the chance to ride the demon drop, was going to ride it as the last one of the year but then it closed due to rain. Came back the next year and it was gone, this was from like 2006 or 2007. Cool to see the old home movies of cedar point to compare to now with my dad and I.
Wow thank you for this!!! I miss the 80s but Cedar Point was the best!!!!
There obviously weren't as many rides in the 80s as it is now, but for some reason, CP seemed more "magical" then.
It lost its luster after 2012

@@MaximusX67 Cedar Point is still amazing. The biggest change is the loss of trees, and you can thank the ash borer and disease mitigation for that.
@@mutoneon didn’t it used to be all trees where Dragster is? Trying to find footage of what used to be there. It was so long ago I can’t remember.

I'm 47 now. My family started making the trip from Michigan in 82 to cedar point for the next 5 years every summer. Best memories. Rip mom.
CP getting the magnum was definitely the reason CP got on the map and the coaster wars were started.

When Demon Drop opened in '83, someone was hurt very early in the season. I worked there and had just ridden it.

i had that experience with Dragster a few years ago, ride was closed, were first in line after waiting
Hey, True Story.... you lost me there at "park was open at 9"
Wish i could go back to befire smart phones when left made sence.
Demon Drop was a ROUGH ride at the end, but I loved it!
How I wish they still had the old height requirement signs of the '80s and early '90s. They were precious.
Definitely something I forgot about and this video brought back those memories.
I remember there were all kinds of urban myths with the Demon Drop: “One of the cars never stopped, went off the track and everyone died” etc.

Thank you so much. I was only two years old that year but that was very nostalgic

I was there in '84 and The Demon Drop was operational, but I recall The Edge incident, but never did get to ride it before it was shut down.
I miss the old log rides.
Me too, but I remember that water being stinky
LOL, the chains on the Gemini sound EXACTLY the same today
back then the big three were demon drop, corkscrew and gemini...
now its top thrill, millennium force and maverick
And now it’s Steel Vengeance, Millennium Force, and Maverick

Yep, Gemini absolutely terrified everyone back then. It's pretty tame by today's standards.
This was such a GREAT park back in the day with Demon Drop, Witches Wheel, and White Water Landing. Now, this park is such a disappointment.
The water on the water ride looked so dirty…
I remember riding White Water Landing that summer, I miss that Cedar Point.
hated waiting in that line for demon drop...it was a slow mover. always put a penny on my knee and watched it float on the way down!
The Gemini is still one of my favorite rides at Cedar Point

Yummy Lake Erie water on white (brown also) water landing
Remember when the Demon Drop was still always breaking down back then? 😆🤣
I just realized that the corkscrew at cedar point was arrow’s very first vertical loop!

its so weird to not see dragster milly and magnum (and maybe gatekeeper) peering over the trees.
You can still ride Demon Drop at Dorney.
1:54 Oh my God, look at that filthy water!

I love cedar point everybody acts like its kennywood or something. They do not know what they are missing
An Intamin ride injuring people ? No, get out of here. Intamin- We've been injuring people since the 80s. Give us a call to start your build today.
This is literally 1984
5:10 most bizzare rollercoaster ride ever no one was loud screaming

@bucky468 Yes and?
Enterprise 1 looks too intense for me.
What was it with guy's and short - short short's back then?
BETTER! So much better than the oversized bellow the knees crap they have now.
@@jimkilbane5180 EXACTLY! Rather see short shorts than butt crack.
Much more flattering. Did you ever watch Baywatch? Or the Tom Selleck show, Magnum PI?
That's awesome, that guy was wearing a Royals jersey.
Demon Drop is similar to Free Fall. Witches Wheel is similar to Enterprise.
I love the witchies wheel
Poor Demon Drop.
If you want to ride it, it still exists at Dorney Park around 2 or 3 hours away from CP.
Does anyone know which rollercoaster is behind Demon Drop at 4:25? Is that Avalanche Run, before enclosed as Disaster Transport?
That was WildCat. During the 1980s, Wildcat was located on the site where the Jumbo Jet once stood.
Is that the pollution from Detroit in the background at 1:50?!! I think so.
Michael Good Nope. It's from Cleveland.
Michael Good, I also think it's Detroit.
@@stinkyloot I doubt that it could be coming from Cleveland. The camera, aimed at White Water Landing, is facing west, not east.
I wouldn't doubt it.
What if it could actually be coming from Toledo?
