I'm from Bulgaria and I read an article from the year 2000 and it said that officially 80-90% of the current Bulgarian Jews are offspring of mixed marriages between Bulgarians and Jews. After the year 2000 the mixing with native Bulgarians has continued and you can easily say that the current Bulgarian Jews are with 75% Bulgarian roots and 25% Jewish roots. Many of them went to live in Israel because Bulgaria is very poor compared to Israel and stopped speaking Bulgarian intentionally to cut their ties with Bulgaria completely. Once the war started they started coming back, but not all of them managed. Some of them were not allowed to leave Israel by the IDF because they got mobilized for the war. Why would Israeli citizens have European passports? Under normal circumstances you would only have dual nationality if one or both of your parents weren’t born in your home country.
Some may have been born in Europe before they went there. Some no doubt ensured that offspring also had passports and this is sometimes possible just for being the child of a passport holder. And some countries have allowed Jews to apply for citizenship by way of an apology for their ancestors treatment in those countries!! 🙄the irony I know!!

I'm from Bulgaria and I read an article from the year 2000 and it said that officially 80-90% of the current Bulgarian Jews are offspring of mixed marriages between Bulgarians and Jews.
