Rob McConnell is one of my all time favorites. Wish I knew where to get more of his music. He was underrated and deserved so much more. Great musicians and music is getting harder to find.
He was actually well-received during his lifetime. So much so that the networks wouldn't really hire a musician unless they were in the Boss Brass. I've heard he talked himself out of a lot of work as well. A salty character, to be sure.
When I am feeling blue of black I turn on this band and things are not so bad after all. The only downer is that they are not around anymore. If they cannot lift your spirits you are dead and might as well just lay down.
Wonderful session, featuring the band with if I'm not mistaken Maynard Ferguson in the back who soloed as a child with the Canadian Broadcasting company and did work & record with the McConnell orchestra from time to time.
Nope. Maynard was never involved with this band. The lead player for most of the BB's existence was Arnie Chykoski, who sits in the middle of the trumpets here.

I have never heard a better lead trumpeter to this day. The one and only Arnie Chikoski. Amazing!
I use to look forward to the Toronto Jazz Festival. This band played every year . I was so very fortunate to see and hear them live🙂

the drummer sounds so great. So clear. Perfect for the band. Studio recordings are as good as you would ever hear.
