LOL! The greatest description and one I have been looking for to explain this tornado for so many years. Thank you also calling it an EF-5 because I do believe tornadoes on the EF system should be ranked by size, wind speed, cape, shear. Instead of how much it destroys. This epic tornado might have been ranked an EF-1 in the end if it hadn't hit ANY structures. But in my world this would have been ranked a PC-5. Just my real initials with the fujita system.
I don't greatly understand how the entire mesocyclone was on the ground. I mean, this thing killed many well known storm chasers, including Tim Samaras and his son, and more besides. I know tornadoes are created from the mesocyclone, by way of the RFD.
That was some of the best raw chasing footage I've seen. You covered it from all possible angles and remained at a safe distance. There's a lot of good footage there for study. Thank you for your efforts.
I remember chasing this storm it was something else 2.6 miles wide with multiple vortexes circling around it man what a storm just 11 days prior I lost my house too the EF5 Moore tornado
I can't believe it was Tim he was so safety conscious I remember seeing him on TV as a kid when I was 11 and in the Plainfield Illinois tornado in 1998 that's when I began studying
They need a new rating system just based on the statistical power/size of a tornado, not based on the damage it does. This tornado was easily one of the strongest ever we've seen.
This one stirred up a lot of controversy over such rating scales. The main wedge was considered EF3, while some satellites on the Southern flank hit well into EF5 speeds, up to 295 mph. Even as EF3-5's go, this was a rare beast.
A tornados isn’t rated on how much damage it does, it’s rated on its wind speed. Now, they determine wind speed by looking damage, which could be unrepresentative to tornados in rural areas that don’t cause any damage. Which means the real issue at hand is how to measure tornados wind speeds more accurately. In my opinion, if the tornado doesn’t do any damage, does it really matter which Fujita classification it gets? I don’t. It was still well represented by its pure size.
OMG that's what I was saying.. how in the FUCK did it reach him in that minute.. you'd be all happy about how far it is.. and then bam.. it is right in front of you.
@@markmnorcal Judging from where the tornado was I'm guessing he turned South on 81 at about 6:13-14. Not only was the twister headed right for him it was just starting to hulk out. The house you see at 14:32 would be damaged beyond repair in only a few minutes. You can see the edge of the inflow starting to hit the trees about then, he was pretty close. I saw in another video where the tornado was moving away from the camera, but it looked like it was getting closer due to it growing so big, so fast.
While you were chasing and filming, did you realise how far out the tornadic winds were from the centre? Dan Robinson's footage gives an excellent perspective of this, when he punched through the Northern edge and then stopped , thinking he was relatively safe. I shudder when I think of Tim and the team just behind him. I'm just an Irish guy with a huge interest in these behemoths. I would love to be able to get a small memorial token across to someone who could put it by the roadside?
It was formed by 3 small supercells started to grow a tornado because of the tornado is a multi vortex tornado two large sub vortices began to collide in to a wedge tornado but it had another which maybe 2 satellite tornadoes have collide

Tim was such an intelligent & safety conscience storm chaser. I believe that something happened just prior to the tornado that rendered him unable to escape.
How times have changed. Over forty years ago we still chased storms, but stayed in our general neighborhood just to be close to our basement/home/office. No videos, and few of us had movie camera film on hand to film such thing, although cameras were available and easy to use, but limited. We had local weathermen then, and they did the best with what they had. Today we can all get involved with very little cost.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't what looks like the rain shaft the actual tornado? I mean this beast was 2.6 miles wide! To those wonderful storm chasers who tragically lost their lives, RIP. To all storm chasers, keep doing hat you're doing! Keep saving lives!
😱 Is it just me or do you really see the multiple vortexes around 14th minute of the video? This video, while really great, scares the shit out of me 😨
Yup. The scary thing is these vortexes were the size of standard twisters so that just goes to show just how powerful and big this tornado was that it produced multiple vortexes that were as strong and agile as they were.
really clear hi-def footage. that storm was forming and dropping funnels like a machine gun. Some angles,in other vids looked like funnel streamers shooting out.
What would it be like if it was a five-mile wide EF5 tornado with winds that are 500 miles an hour? If there was ever such a thing that would have to be in EF8!
14:19 Is where Mike Bettes' GMC Yukon was overtaken by one of the sub vortices seen over in the field racing towards the highway at about 100 miles per hour. This happened exactly 3 minutes after Brendon passed this same spot.
The random song in there was weird... Also, your sped up video was doin some weird things, but you had some nice shots. I really liked the part where you could see the blue green glow in the clouds so strongly due to hail.
The Wall Cloud itself seemed to be almost on deck; can someone tell us if it actually did?? If so, did it do it a lot? At any rated, it seemed a whole mess of BIG Vortices, not only orbiting the COLOSSAL Main Vortex, but crisscrossing at random, through a vast sea of RFD. And sometimes, the Main Vortex would seem to vanish, with one or more Satellites becoming the New Main Vortex. Thanks.
How come NOAA states it as F3 but people mention it as F5. Was there F5 winds detected at a point of time and it only was doing damage during weaker phases?
Good question! Mobile radar recorded winds WELL over EF-5 criteria. Current grading of a tornado is based off the damage it does. So a 500mph tornado over water would be a EF-0
***** Thats dumb though. a 500mph toonoodoo should desevre an f5 rating, but just because it didnt hit anything it gets F0 status. Lame. So why is it not the same for hurricanes?
+Brendon Lindsey Correct,i don't like the new EF rating system at all.....everything is now based off of damage.Just because there is nothing in it's path does not mean it can't do catastrophic damage.Winds should be half of the rating.
