Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and for many Māori it is a day to protest breaches of the treaty, the impact of colonisation on Māori, and to advocate for change.
We look at the history of protest at Waitangi and the role it has played in elevating Māori rights in Aotearoa.

Apirana Ngata also said in that same speech: "let me acknowledge further that in the whole of the world, I doubt whether any native race has been so well treated by a European people as the Maori in New Zealand"

Yeah sure, what's the benchmark. Ripping the Maori economic powerbase from them. Blatant and covert racism. Terrible health and social outcomes shared by colonised indigenous people all over the world. One mans word's don't change FACTS.

and that, is both a great statement, and a sad one at the same time, given the current government's horrendously bad faith efforts. I can tell you this from direct experience, having lived in a country where the native people's were genocided and crushed into little more than a token number of their former selves (the USA).

And it begins, Aotearoa / New Zealand is divided: Maori rights supporters vs Non Maori rights supporters across the country. Current government supporting the start of the treaty bill has opened old battle wounds that had been historically forgiven by Māori. This separation is predicted to increase rapidly over the next 3 years.

just remember it is not the fault of Maori as you make this point, but directly the fault of David Seymour and NZ First. I wouldn't even blame Luxon most for this one.

I´m from France. Is there a special day in New zealand where the maoris get together to celebrate and exchange stories about the ram-raids and smash-and-grab robberies of Michael Hill Jewellers stores that they have done over the past 12 months?

Nicely captured the essence of why Māori and non Māori allies protest. To bring about awareness of the theft of Māori land by the crown and its breaches of Te tiriti ✊🏽

Waitangi Day is more a day for Maori grievances to be heard, and less about a celebration of NZ. It creates division, not unity, and not pride in our country. I am grateful I get the day off work, but other than that, I wish we had a proper national day of celebration and pride on any other day of the year. I would happily give up my Waitangi Day for an alternative New Zealand day.

What did Maori get from the Treaty? A civilised life for generations to come! What is that if it is not a win. They judge what they lost by today's yardstick - but what if they had been left as a primitive and canibalistic society? What would that be like?

The activist place great emphasis upon te tiriti but the English "draft" was the first document. The intent and conditions for the Crown for a treaty with Maori. Maori contend that there is miscommunication when it was translated. Well I don't think so. There is too much evidence that Maori "got it"
