  • Come join us for Austrian Food as we review 4 different dishes that we try eating in Vienna, Austria at Schweizerhaus restaurant located in Prater. Having arrived in Prater to film the amusement park and famous ferris wheel Wiener Riesenrad. Knowing us, eating some traditional Austrian food was a priority before we got on any rides. Overall, we tried four different dishes keying in mostly on Viennese classics such as wiener schnitzel and apfelstrudel (apple strudel). The following is a list of food items from our meal:
    1) Austrian Goulash (tasted more like Pörkölt)
    2) Schnitzel (Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein) with pork
    3) Viennese potato salad (Wiener Erdäpfelsalat)
    4) Viennese Apple Strudel (Wiener Apfelstrudel)
A note about wiener schnitzel. It should be made with veal to be authentic. The one we got with pork would actually be called Wiener Schnitzel vom Schwein or Schnitzel Wiener Art.

Austrian Food Review - 4 Dishes to try in Vienna, Austria Travel Video Transcript:
hello from a rather unusual dining spot. Today we're at an amusement park. We're visiting Prater (Schweizerhaus) and we got really hungry so we figured let's make a food video first, go on the rides later and we figured we should probably try some Austrian food.
So it is one of those cases where the food arrived before we even started filming our intro. So everything we're having is already at the table. We ordered the Wiener Schnitzel, we got some goulash, Viennese potato salad and it all looks amazing. So yeah let's dig in. And we even have dessert coming too. And beer.
And the beer is going to go so nicely with the schnitzel and goulash as well. So that is also exciting.
So you want to introduce us to your dish? Ah, I sure do. This is one of my favorite dishes in Central Europe. Look at that. Beef goulash. And you can see here it comes with pickles as well. Yeah. And it also comes with bread dumplings. Mmmhmm.
And I remember we made the mistake in when we had goulash in the Czech Republic of eating our bread dumplings with our hands and everyone was like you guys are like barbarians. You guys are like barbarians. Apparently you are supposed to use your fork and knife. Alright. We'll use our fork and knife. I'm going to do that this time. Proper cutlery.
The meat is so tender, the sauce, the gravy is so rich and flavorful. And just having the bread compliments it really nicely too. Oh my gosh this is awesome. I think the last time we had goulash must have been in Budapest so it has been a little while.
Back to the food. So I ordered the wienerschnitzel but the classic it is supposed to be veal. Yep. But they don't have that on the menu here. They have one made with pork. Um, so yeah that is the one we ordered. It is actually a lot cheaper when you order the one with veal it costs double. Yeah.
And this was only about 10 Euros. This was about 10 Euro. The one with veal you're looking more at around 20 Euros.
That is really nice. It is a really thin cut of meat. Um, I believe the way they make it is that they dip it in like whisked eggs. Or no, first flower, whisked eggs and then breadcrumbs. And then they fry it.
So over here we have potato salad. Yeah, this one apparently is a Viennese potato salad. Viennese. Austrian potato salad. Let's try that. Yeah. And it has onions. Red onion.
price point. So that meal came to 36 Euros and 10 cents. That was for beer, for mineral water, the potato salad, the wienerschnitzel, goulash, apfelstrudel (apple strudel) for dessert. So ordered quite a bit. Yeah. We are leaving stuffed.

If you want to visit Vienna again (you definitely should), here are some places that I can recommend:
-Silberwirt: Classical, traditional Austrian restaurant with many dishes and good prices
-Huth Gastwirtschaft: Premium traditional Austrian restaurant, more expensive but incredibly good
-Plachutta: Everyone should try their Tafelspitz, they are on the higher end side aswell, but very good food
-Meissl & Schadn: Best Schnitzel in Vienna (so basically in the whole world)

Fun fact: Vienna is the only city in the world, which has its own official cuisine. Not just a few selective dishes like New York Cheesecake. In fact Austrian cuisine originated from Viennese cuisine and is was later supplemented with local dishes from around the country, while everywhere else in the world the cities adopted their cuisine from the country they were in.

Austrian and Hungarian Gulasch are very different. In Austria it's a sauce and in Hungary it's a soup.

@@viktoriahuszar7487 There are different variations of typical Austrian (or Cisleithanian) Gulasch.
Fiakergulasch, Znaimer Gulasch, Karlsbader Gulasch, Biergulasch, Erdäpfelgulasch, Fisolengulasch, Palffygulasch, Triestergulasch, Herrengulasch...
Your are right in one point, Wiener Saftgulasch is quite like Hungarian Pörkölt.
And of course the whole "Gulasch thing" started in Hungary with Gulyas (a Soup, originally made in a "bogracs"), Pörkölt, Tokany and Paprikas. And the mass production of grounded paprika which was sold all over Europe.
Btw. as far as I know Hungarians nowadays mostly use Erös Pista (a paste) instead of grounded paprika for Gulyas, Pörkölt & Co, which constitutes another difference.

Glad you enjoyed our food. Nothing wrong with pork schnitzel, all the austrians will rant about how pork is not real Wiener schnitzel but in reality the all order pork themselves because of the price and its just as good ;) by the way its not necessarily a super thin cut, its just bashed thin with a meat hammer to make it tender. Cut is usually from the shoulder.

Yeah, actually, that's not true. MOST restaurants here are family owned, and saving is top on the list. The foods used are generally cheap and EVERYTHING is used, not top quality by any means. It's just like back home in the kitchen, and I've cooked in family owned Austrian restaurants, so called "Mexican" restaurants in Austria, even huge resort restaurants like Robinson Club (Ampflwang to be exact) and it's the saaaaaaaaame thang! I was REALLY surprised! I don'T go out at all because I know what ur eating, and tho it's not bad, it's not what u think ur paying for so, that's the truth man.

    • @beyondquestion

U'd be amazed to see how many of these kitchens have box soup from brands like Knorr, Unilever, and even ready made Roix (spelling, it's pronounced ruuu..) Ur soups are made from scraps of vegies along with onions and such, soups are usually left overs converted (palaschinken, leberknodel, fleischstrüdel, etc) and most salads are revived with water and ice cubes, tho ice cubes are hard to come by in Austria lol! Trust me, ur not being poisoned, but I feel ur being taken advantage of. Most of these foods are from Hungary anyway, and lots are focused on poor families anyway and havce become popularized in kitchens. U'd be real surprised if u can get access in the kitchen and u know ur shit in culinary operations. (how to tell fresh from not, old vs new, etc.) One main rule is first in first out, old b4 new, meaning food products... Bon appettite!^^

Sam and Audrey, thanks for this very helpful video. Currently I getting ready to travel to Vienna where I should be tasting the classical wiener schnitzel. Did you ever thought of the concept of dishes and food traveling to different countries? Well, forgive me if I become a party pooper, but the wiener schnitzel was not originally from Vienna it was the Cotoletta alla milanese that traveled from Milan way back then. The same dish that found a home in Argentina and many parts of South America where is simply known as Milanesa. By the way, I also loved your video at the Sacher Café tasting the world famous Sacher Torte. Thanks again

Just to nitpick a bit. You went to the "Schweizerhaus" and missed out on two specialities that they are famous for. Firstly the restaurant is very famous for its "Stelze" (roasted ham hock) - though it might have been a bit too much for two persons. Secondly its to my knowledge the only location in Vienna you can get airpressurized Budvar keg beer, which tastes much better than the carbonated beer you get everywhere else.

What's the difference between wienerschnitzel and milanesa specifically?

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  6 років тому +4

Great question. Apparently not much as the milanesa is influenced from the wienerschnitzel but from research and experience apparently in Austria it is generally fried in butter, and in Italy/Argentina in olive oil. Also, the Milanesa includes all kinds of different meat whereas a true wienerschnitzel would be veal.

    • @suit1337
      @suit1337 6 років тому +1

Both - if it is the real deal - are Veal. And are crusted with flour, egg and bread crumbs.
Wiener Schnitzel has more breadcrumbs in the crust, flour is obly used for attaching the crust to the meat and is fryed in clarified butter
Piccata Milanese has a higher egg and flour content in the crust, also parmigiano is added - the crust is a bit softer therefore - and it is fryed in oil
As sidedish: wiener schnitzel goes with potatoes and preiselbeeren (similar to cranberry, but sweeter) - piccata milanese goes with spaghetti and tomato sauce.

The "vanilla sauce" thing is a pure german thing, but we do this because there are so many germans visiting Austria..
But the traditonal "Viennese style" is with icing sugar (like as in the video) or with extra whipped creme.

Well, first of all the "Apple-Strudel" is quite much older in Austria than the ability to make Vanilla-sauce! A question of being able to count years!
And second, with keeping in mind what I said before, I spoke of the "Traditional Viennese Style" with a big emphases on "traditional"(=old) and an emphases on "Viennese"(=not Burgenland), as well. Have you ever heard the expression "Wiener Küche" which literally means "Viennese cuisine"?
And third, it is true, the Germans did the "Vanilla-thing" in combination with an apple-strudel, in the first place. Sorry, if I destroyed your view of "some things"

Sorry to say that, but Italy and Germany share no borders, at all!
But I think you ment "Bolzano" which is originally called "Bozen" in the german language and that is Southern Tyrol which is the most northern part of todays Italy.
After World-War One Tyrol which was always a part of the Austrian Empire was divided allthough the Italians couldn´t conquer it during the war (they tried hard but didn´t succeed) and the southern part of Tyrol fell to Italy according to the peace-treaty of St.Germaine in France in 1919.

    Funny,
the "Schweizerhaus" in Prater is famous for having original Budweiser beer in barrels which is tapped and very rare in the whole world outside the czech republic and tastes totally different in comparison to original Budweiser filled in bottles. And you drank Paulaner which is a german beer by the way and which you can get everywhere at any time.
    A missed opportunity.
But Gulasch and Beer is in fact a good choice, and Wiener Schnitzel, as well, allthough the speciality of the "Schweizerhaus" and the reason why locals visit especially this restaurant is, beside of the tapped Budweiser, the roasted Pork-leg.

1.First of all, as you said there is a meal called Goulash ( exactly as the same as the traditional food from Hungary (pörkölt). The Austrians couldn't pronounce pörkölt so they call it Goulash.
    2. Kartoffel salad/Erdäpfel salad (it is from Bavaria as the Paulaner Wheatbeer)
    3. The Strudel is "echte" hungarian sweet. It is from the 18-19.th century, when Hungary and Austria was a Monarchy. The original name is "rétes". In the beginning of the 19th century it was on the Ritz Hotel's Menü in Paris as "Rétes Hongrois”.
However, you should try these food. All of them are delicious even in Austria!

Maybe you should have tried the "Stelze"(knuckle of pork) - it is a meal the Schweizerhaus is famous for. Furthermore I need to say that you can only call it a "Wiener Schnitzel" if the meat is from veal. Since veal is pricy they often make Schnitzel from pork. This version is tasty too but no real "Wiener Schnitzel". (It is like you are saying you want to have a roasted turkey and you get a roasted chicken.)

Here, all good. Boiled eggs are sold just like normal uncooked ones, AND, even Eatser eggs are cooked coloured, and sold like raw eggs. At the Hofa, they tend to be sold without fridgeration, usually stacked next to the sugar. In my whole time here, not one case of anyone sick from them, and many use raw (unpasturized) whole eggs in Tiramisu, not to mention them uncooked "breakfast" eggs they eat with a spoon, YUUUUUCK!^^
