    For some evaluation in lines 78-81, you can say the father has an immediate clear view for her future implying he may think about her and care for her, despite the neglect he is presented as showing at the beginning of the extract. However this also could mean he just cares about her future and therefore his status in his job, and it may stem from a selfishness as it will be known his children have become successful, reflecting him as a ‘good’ father. Idk I just made that up whilst typing

      Agreed. Given the context that the events took place in the 1950s, with mass immigration from the mainland to Hong Kong, it wouldn't come as a surprise that Adeline's father had everything planned out for the sake of a stable future for her (as seen in "foolproof profession"). As a Hongkonger myself, I'd say this is pretty much the norm when it comes to typical Asian parenting.

    One thing we can add is that the short paragraph of happiness foreshadows the temporary happiness she will feel. I even had a feeling that the last dialogue 'thank you very much' uses a sarcastic tone, because only half of her wish is being fulfilled.

    The parallel made with the butler in lines 17&18 can be extended - as we see later in the text, Adeline’s father gives her strict instructions regarding her future, and she gladly plans to carry them out
    Yes, I could probably have phrased this better

    Thanks very much to your video! But I actually interpreted the last few paragraphs as a shift in her mentality...that she was first given the decision-making power and suddenly the power was taken back. Then she was dissatisfied yet numb about her father's sentence(decision) so that she had nothing else to opt for but to obey. What do you think of my analysis, or she was just exhilarating about the possible escape?

    • @robindabanc2245
      @robindabanc2245 5 років тому

      I think she was enthusiastic about it. She went from not knowing what her future would be like, not even knowing if these would be her final weeks in school to being granted her wish to study in England. Her decision to do literature was rash and in the moment with hardly any prior planning. The quote 'bliss was it in that dawn to be alive' shows her exhilaration. Despite being given the short end of the stick and made to do obstetrics, as controlling and unfair to her as that is, she doesn't seem to acknowledge in it the final few lines.

      It is two that that are mentioned close together but are complete opposites. Like mentioning “death” and “life” in the same sentence. You could search it up. Or in this text, how home usually makes you feel comforted and safe, but she feel a sense of dread instead.
