    I read this book and was fascinated with it when I was in highschool. And now at 21 it has pride place in my bookshelf of my own place. I want to read it again soon and see how I process it as an adult. I googled her the other day and was thrilled to find out that she is still alive at the amazing age of 80!!!!! Such an incredible, beautiful woman.💕💖💕

    The ill treatment and, emotional abuse of innocent youngsters when a family expands to become... 'step' is, unfortunately, a very common story. The cruelty Adeline suffered, (which in no way do I condone) informed and, shaped her for a lifetime. But, she turned it into a kind of triumph, with understanding and even compassion toward people who clearly did not deserve it...And I must say I admire her enormously. She did indeed reach a kind of closure. She was a wife, a loving mother. She was successful in her career. And now writes and travels widely.

    She is such a strong and intelligent person growing up with all the discriminations against girls . Very impressive that she has the tremendous strength to grow up to be so successful and even helping women to gain an equality status in mankind in our modern society .

    I just accidentally discovered her book online and I got sad and fell in love with it. I am totally inspired Adeline so much!
    After years of rejection and abuse, at least, she has a great and awesome ambition, and most importantly, she has now her own family, her husband and loving children who truly supports and love her much in heart more than her own previous family in the past.

    I just read Chinese Cinderella in one sitting today. 5 hours straight with a riveting book... I came in search of further info on how things turned out. It's so satisfying to see Adeline in this doco looking so beautiful and strong. I think I fell in love a little bit with her. I especially appreciated being taken through the house in Shanghai and knowing so freshly the pathos behind her tour there and her reminiscence of Ye ye and Aunt Baba. 加油 五妹

    I don't know how I came upon this book in middle school, but it was the most intense book I'd ever read in my life. There was an older lady who actually took my book and never gave it back. I appreciated this book and all this woman went through. After everything she went through, she stood tall and showed her life. This is the meaning of showing others that we are not alone.

    Adeline remained a level headed, a dignified and notable women, above her resentful family. I hope she knows she is a strong women and her past relationship with her despicable Niang and sister will not define her and weigh her down. Adeline, I hope you now live a wonderful life you always deserved!

    I recently found this book on a free book table. I’m almost finished the book. I can’t believe what a horrible person Niang and the father was. Really the whole bunch was poison. It was totally the father’s fault not obeying the Dr’s orders to have Adeline’s mother admitted to the hospital after her birth complications.

  • @James_Bowie

    At 27:01 "nothing was left to me". That is completely at odds with what she wrote in Falling Leaves. In Chapter 30 she wrote, quoting the contents of her father's will which her husband Bob found: "Father had divided his estate into seven shares. He left one share to me ... no share was left to Susan .. no share is to go to my daughter Lydia ... He at least did not exclude me." The fact that the evil Niang rewrote that will to exclude Adeline is beside the point. Her father did not exclude her from his own will.

    • @changeintheair9648
      @changeintheair9648 6 місяців тому

      No, it is not at odds. Because in Chinese Cinderella - she only knew she was left with nothing. Later as she got older in Falling Leaves - she found out (quoting father's will content) BUT she was not privy to that when her father died. Niang was the one who said what was written in will (lied).

    I know people are super against her stepmother but if u read carefully, she said ‘
    "My siblings, and maybe my father, blamed me for my mother's death," she explains. "My siblings said, you're bad luck, you brought death to our family. But my stepmother never said that to me; she told me I had bad blood from my mother, you're no good," she said.’ Her step mom treated her like shit bcs she was the only one that was disobedient and went up against her, her siblings were young but they’ve done the worst things I’ve ever seen being done by children. His father allowed the cruel bullies to happen and only sent her alone to orphanage.

    In Hong Kong she is part of the A league based on where the people lived... we can all learn that even if you're at that "status" it doesn't drive happiness.

    I loved her book as a kid, but after reading WIld Swans by Jung CHang, I see Yen mah barely touched on the horrors of MAoist china. adeline never mentioned him as a bad person. But he created the bloody purge called the great leap forward, not to mention witch hunts and violence against dissidents

      She left China long before Mao came to power. Also, the story is about Adeline's relationship with her family. Mao is irrelevant in this case.
