    Irreconcilable differences with my Windows 10 system have resulted in a parting of the ways, and I am expecting my new 27" iMac to arrive momentarily. Will the Apple migration tool successfully pull over all my pictures or should I wait and import directly from an external hard drive that I have cleverly filled with my documents and pictures?
    So far I am really enjoying your videos - very clear and task-oriented approach to teaching as opposed to "here are 10 best tips" or "here is my superior way to do things".

      Thanks for the kind words Richard! I hope to have so many more videos coming as I battle the clock to create!
      I have used the Apple Migration Assistant a handful of times throughout my use and it has some quarks to it. My personal preference is to migrate everything manually from a Windows environment to a new Mac, but others my say to use it.
      Copy the important files files from your documents, pictures, desktop and whatever else to an external drive and then move files as you need necessary.
      Thanks for the likes and subscription!

    I found your channel by accident and subscribed immediately. Being a retired IT guy, I know my way around a computer reasonably well and have been using Apple products since I retired. One thing that has always confused me is Apple's Photos app. Before Apple, I used Windows machines and did a fair amount of work in Photoshop and Lightroom so my photos are in a Lightroom library. I have never been sure about the purpose of the Apple Photo app. Your video shows how to get photos into the Photo library on my Mac but what next. Is this app supposed to be another photo editor? I don't really need another one. What I am hoping to do is have the ability to move photos back and forth from my computer to my iPhone. I may have photos in my Lightroom library that have been edited and I want to move them to my phone, and vice versa. I cannot find a way to do that. Am I trying to do something the Photos app was not intended to do? If you know the answer, great; or if you know a place where I can learn how to do that, even better. Thanks!

    Your videos are great! My iMac photo libraries are good, finally. I have my photos on an external Harddrive and when I attach it to my MacBook Pro, it shows up but it says it can’t be used by my MacBook Pro ? My MacBook Pro needs replacing bc it’s almost out of memory storage, but I thought I’d still b able to use it and do some editing on LR and use the external Harddrive? Any thoughts? Thank you

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  2 роки тому

      Hi @NancyK94!
      So the most important thing when it comes to hard drives is how the drive is formatted. Think of it as each format is a different language and different devices like Apple and Windows speak different languages.
      When you typically purchase an external hard drive, it's often formatted as "NTFS" or "ExFat" or "MS-DOS". These are all windows based formats (languages). When plugged into an Apple computer, it can see the drive, but it can't use it based off the format.
      Mac formats are usually "Mac OS Extended" or "APFS". There's pros and cons to all formats.
      Usually the first best thing to do when you get any drive is to format to a language of the device that you're using. Do you know if you formatted that external drive?
      I hope that makes sense and sorry for the delayed response! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your kind words and support!

    with the photos imported, where the date is given as a title, is there a way to also give that date a name, like iPhoto used to let you do?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  3 роки тому

      You can always user the Inspector to view all meta data and information about any photo selected. Click the little "i" in the top right of the interface, or really the only other option is to display meta data under each photo, which is usually the name that the camera assigns each photos. You would turn that on in the menu bar: View > Metadata > Titles
      Thanks for watching and I hope that helps!

    Good morning Joel. Question; is it possible to have my iPad connected to the Cloud, and cherry pick what photos get shared, or put on to my Mac Book Pro? In other words my iPad has several hundred pictures on it, but I only want about 1/3 of them on my Mac. I would also like to use my iPad as a camera, and have those sent to my Mac. Thanks for any opinions, or help you may offer.

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  3 роки тому +1

      Hi @Greg! So if you're using iCloud, it's designed to sync all content. You really can't pick and choose...however, here are a couple ideas that come to mind.
      If you fully have iCloud Photos turned on in your iPad, but not on your Mac, you could share selected photos by either manually syncing through Finder, Airdrop wirelessly when nearby, or I my best suggestion would be to use Shared iCloud Photo Albums.
      If you used Shared iCloud Photo Albums, you could either share a link or just access the shared album directly in Photos.
      Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!

    Joel, nice presentation. I want to take photos from many old SD cards and get them on my iCloud storage as well as on an external hard drive. Will iCloud automatically upload from my computer before I store it on an external drive? I want to delete from the computer after storing on both locations. Will icloud delete photos if I remove from laptop?
    Lots of questions. Thx

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  3 роки тому

      Thank you! First you want to make sure that you're dealing with one Photos library that is the "System Photo Library". While in Photos go to: Photos > Preferences > General and make sure that the library you're using is the System Photo Library. Otherwise it doesn't sync with your iCloud Photos.
      Second, you can store that library locally or on your external drive. It doesn't matter where it's at. You can really add and import the photos from the SD card at any point. I would say that if your main goal is to keep the Photos library on the external, then move the external photo library there first and then start importing all of your old photos. If you're copying the library to the external and then making that the system library, you're able to then delete it locally from your Mac.
      Keep in mind, depending on the amount of photos, it could take days maybe weeks to fully sync, so be patient.
      Please keep in mind that to fully utilize the iCloud syncing, you'll need the equal amount or greater storage in iCloud to make sure everything syncs. And yes if you delete out of that library it will delete from iCloud and all of your devices. iCloud is designed to keep all of your devices in sync and on the same page.
      I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

      Joel,
      Thank you for this help.
      If I understand you, I can make the external drive the "System Photo Library". Then I can import photos from the SD cards direct to the external drive. If I keep it plugged in ICloud will sync with the photos on the external drive. ( I paid the extra and have plenty of space on iCloud). This will be a slow process.
      I'm assuming photos will still sync from my iPhone. ???
      I'm not sure if the photos will sync from my other laptop. Can there be only one "System Photo Library"?
      I appreciate your help.
      Again,
      Thanks,
      John Jam

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  3 роки тому

      Happy to help!
      So first off, yes, there can only be one System Photo Library per computer account. If you have two macs, both Photo libraries will sync as each will have their own System Photo Library. You can keep this library on your external drive. I would recommend that you just use a dedicated drive for this. If you have an external drive that you use for Time Machine Backup, do not use it as sometimes the permissions can cause issues.
      Once you have your main System Photo Library to your external, import all your photos and keep the Photos App open and just let it do its thing. This could take days if not weeks depending on the photos. Once finished, it will then update and be in sync with your iPhone, iPad and any other Apple Device that you're syncing with.
      To give you perspective, I have about 30,000 photos in my Photos library and when it finally finished syncing, it took almost two weeks for all my devices to get on the same page, so be patient. :-)
      Hope this helps!

      @@Learnwithjoel Now I don't feel so bad.
      30,000 photos is a lot. Hope you have a good way to locate the ones you want. So you can access all 30k photos from your iPhone? Wow!
      I do use a separate hard drive for Time Machine.
      I'll give it a try.
      I was just watching an Apple video on the iPhone 12 Pro camera. Pretty impressive video and still features for a price.
      Again, Thanks, john jam

      LOL, Yeah 30K is getting up there, and it doesn't even include all of my photo projects from all my shoots that i've done over the years.
      It's not to bad locating anything as I primarily search by people, location or date to find something. But yes it is nice to have access to all photos on my iPhone.
      I'm hoping the bring the RAW format to the iPhone 11 Pro. I couldn't justify upgrading to the 12!

      Have you recently upgraded your Mac to a new OSX? I have seen this error before and it's usually because of jumping up a few Operating systems and not updating the Photos Library as you go along.
      I would first try repairing the Photos library. You can do this by holding down "option + command" on the keyboard and then opening up Photos. It should then prompt you to "repair" the library.
      Try this first and it could take a while depending on how big your library is!

    Mr. Fell, I’ve looked at a number of your videos and some other presenters as well, but don’t find what I’m looking for help on. I don’t use a Mac. I do have a Windows 10 machine, but don’t do much in iCloud with it. I primarily use my iPad (256 GB, lots of free space) and an iPhone (64GB, with 13GB free). I use Photo Stream so I can pick and choose what photos get saved to the respective devices; mostly iPhone to iPad as I take very few photos with my iPad. Since Photo Stream is going away, I’ve decide to start using Apple Photos. What I’m not clear on is what will happen when I turn off Photo Stream, turn on, Apple Photos. Will I wind up with a ton duplicates as my two devices upload photos to iCloud - many of the photos on my iPad are duplicates of those on my iPhone, some not? I also want to keep local copies of photos on both devices? What impact if any will this have on my Albums on my respective devices? How does the Recently Deleted folders work on the respective devices? Thanks for any help you can give me.

      I hear ya @Bob Kuest!
      There's a few options and settings they seemed to removed from the new Apple Photos.
      However you should still be able to sort and view each album individually. The main library is automatically sorted by date so you can't change that, and the import as well, but everything else you can change.
      I still think there's lots of improvements @Apple could do with Apple Photos. They had an amazing photos app called Aperture that was so good. If they where to incorporate that into Apple Photos, it would be amazing!

    If I already have a album made in my flash drive (vacation photos for example ) can I drop albums from my flash drive into a empty folder that I made in apple photos ? Can I copy folders over to apple photos or do I have to re organize them?

    • @Learnwithjoel
      @Learnwithjoel  5 років тому

      Kenneth Gray
      Hey Kenneth! Yes there is a check box to have you keep your organization if the folders and will transfer offer the majority of your previous organization.
      When your drag the main parent folder in that contains all your other folders, make sure you click the box in the top right to “keep folder organization”
      Now depending how you have your Photo library set, photos can either be imported and saved into a Photos Library or the pictures can be referenced to your flash drive or hard drive. I’ll make another video on that topic and the reasoning behind it.
      Thanks for watching!

If I try to open my photos in my iphone it only shows a blank white screen. I went to Amac, called Apple support but still no solution to all the options we tried but still the same did not solved. Please help me..

      Hi @Familie Indo-Belanda! I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma, and father. I know how important family is and especially in today's world it's even more critical. Prayers for you, your little one and friends and family.
      Ok, so a few things...did you ever use iCloud or we're you ever signed into an iCloud account on your iPhone? If so, have you looked on icloud.com the website?
      When you say that you couldn't open the photos and videos on the iPhone 8+, are you saying that the Photos App itself just doesn't open, or when you open it, there's nothing there?
      Do you have any other Apple Devices? Have you tried connecting it to another a Mac instead of a Windows machine? Windows and iTunes don't always play the best together.
      Also just for clarification, you've turned off your iPhone and turned it back on and also updated the iOS software to the latest version?
      It's hard to tell if the photos are still on there or not. You said that when you open up photos the App, it's only shows blank or white screen...what happens if you try to access the photos from another App on your iPhone? For example in text messages or email? Do you see the photos there?
      If the photos truly aren't on the device and you have no backup at all, your best and only option is some type of data recovery software like the one i'll list below:
      www.imyfone.com/iphone-data-recovery/
      The software is available for Windows computer, but again, it's used to recover deleted content. This would be a last resort if you've done everything up above.
      Let me know if this all makes sense. Thank you for watching and I look forward to hearing from you.
