  • Petticoat Junction is an American situation comedy produced by Filmways that originally aired on CBS from September 1963 to April 1970.
The series is one of three interrelated shows about rural characters created by Paul Henning. Petticoat Junction was created upon the success of Henning's previous rural/urban-themed sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies (1962--1971). The success of Petticoat Junction led to a spin-off, Green Acres (1965--1971).
The setting for the series is The Shady Rest Hotel, just outside the farming town of Hooterville (later the location of Green Acres). The hotel is situated on the train line of the C. & F.W. Railroad, halfway between the towns of Pixley and Hooterville, each 25 miles (40 km) away. The characters "seem" to go to Hooterville for some goods and services, including high school and the hospital, but prefer Pixley for supermarket shopping, beauty parlors, and movies.

I had a cousin who worked at that studio and when I was a little kid my mom and I got a tour by my cousin including the "cement pond" and front facade where The Beverly Hillbillies" was filmed, and next to it was the set of Petticoat Junction and we happened upon Bea and Linda Kay sitting in directors chairs. They were very nice and kind to us. My cousin was friends with Linda Kay who later came to his wedding. Brings back lots of fond memories.

My wife’s granddad liked that show for one weird reason. They actually had a railroad engineer that knew how to properly operate a steam engine. He said that you could tell by the smoke. Evidently if you tried to force a steam engine to run it would blow thick black smoke. If you took the time and did it right the smoke would be nonexistent to a pale gray. He was a retired brakeman for Canadian pacific railroad and couldn’t stand to see an old steam engine abused.

    • @rotunda57
      @rotunda57 3 роки тому +11

What he probably doesn't know is that this locomotive burns oil. The firewood on the top of the tender is for show. There's a cistern in the tender that holds the oil which is pumped into the firebox. The heavy black smoke comes mostly from burning coal in too rich of an environment. Fuel for this loco is free; it's waste crankcase oil from oil change garages.

The steam locomotive used for the show was Sierra Railway #3, a 4-6-0 built by the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in 1891, which the engine is now owned by Railtown 1897 in Jamestown, California. The Hooterville Cannonball, shown chugging slowly along its way to town in the the '60s sitcom classic "Petticoat Junction," was the very same train seen in "The Wild Wild West," but apparently just in the pilot.
The engine, called Sierra Railroad No. 3, may have been the same one seen in "The Iron Horse," but no one's really sure at this point. All of the "Iron Horse's" train footage was shot on Sierra Railway property, but No. 3 wasn't the only engine they had.
However, the No. 3 is clearly its star. The Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, Calif., which currently houses the No. 3, says that the engine has appeared in more than 100 productions. Among the other titles are "Gunsmoke," "Little House on the Prairie," "Lassie" and "Rawhide," and that latter series made its hitherto unknown young star into a lifelong fan of the No. 3.
"The Sierra No. 3 is like a treasured old friend," the museum quotes Clint Eastwood as saying. "Even in the business of 'make believe,' you can't beat the real thing."
It's fitting, then, that when Eastwood returned to the western genre that made him a star after a years-long exile, he returned to the No. 3 as well -- the train appeared in his Oscar-winning 1992 film "Unforgiven," 33 years after he first rode it in "Rawhide."
The Sierra No. 3 was used extensively for the pilot for the quirky late-'60s action comedy "The Wild Wild West," and stock footage of it appeared periodically in later episodes, but the train used for the bulk of the regular-season episodes was reportedly called the Inyo, a train built in 1875 by Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia.

The Real loco SRR 3 was extensively rebuilt several years ago, when 3 received a Brand new Welded boiler that was installed in Sacremento and custom built to comply with modern boiler regulations and inspections. And to replaced the very old riveted boiler which was extremely worn out so that it couldn't be operated safely. And the Tender to carry water and fuel with oil, was also rebuilt with most of the water cistern built with New Steel. Because the Old tender was quite rusty with holes, and metal patches covering the holes. There is a TV show from PBS that shows this loco being rebuilt called "INCREDIBLE RESTORATIONS" now on Y.T. that shows many different historical Restorations.

(Thank you, Cozy TV!) Cozy TV (Ch. 24.5 in St. Louis, Mo.) just ran a Petticoat Junction weekend marathon, May, 18 and 19th. I always found myself anticipating the train whistle at the end of the opening theme song. Such serenity! And such a feel-good show! ~ What surprised me was the fact that they already had a P.J. marathon, probably in the last year! How much fun that was!

This version is the 1966 - 1967 season, I believe. It's in color, but the blonde actress was replaced during the final years. 1963 - 1965 was filmed in black and white and featured a different brunette who was subsequently replaced by the gorgeous Lori Saunders (seen in this version). The actress who played Kate left in the 1968 due to cancer. A new version of the opening was produced in order to eliminate her and introduce Uncle Joe as the new managing operator. The final version included June Lockhart as a female doctor who resided at the Shady Rest. That was 1969 - 1970, with June coming fresh off the recently cancelled "LOST IN SPACE."

Kaye Bradley is Bea Benadarette, and us the voices of Many, Many cartoon women, like especially BETTY RUBBLE in the FLINTSTONES And some of her cast mates from FLINTSTONES also were on P.J. like Jean Vander Peryle as Wilma as one of the Hooterville folks; also Alan Reed as FRED was also a guest on P.J.; Yet I haven't seen Mell Blanc as Barney as a guest on P.J., but on older B/W shows he was on others like Jack Benny!! OK IN sept. 2023A.D.

@@chuckschafer6728 !!YES!! "Charlie Pratt the engineer" was Mr. SMILEY BURNETTE, and already very FAMOUS in the Westen Movies 🎬 as the sidekicks for Gene Autrie and Roy Roger's and John Wayne and many serialized adventures; plus ➕ he knows his steam locomotives 🚂 and Railroad phrases to perfectly fit his role as Engineer of the CANNONBALL,!!, ALL ABOARD,!!, FULL SPEED AHEAD, HIGHBALL,!! In Addition his friendly co-star was Mr. RUFE DAVIS as the dual role, and many more, as Fireman, conductor, baggage 🧳 handler, track repair, and cow milker 🥛 lol 😂; also Smiley and Rufe recorded a popular novelty song 🎵 named, "#Steam Cinders and Smoke", and cut a 45 r.p.m. record that you can hear on Y.T., as both a sad ballad for the retired steam locomotive 🚂 engineers 😢 or a happy 😊 😃 jaunty country song 🎵! Have FUN!! CLEAR THE TRACKS!!!!! THE CANNONBALL EXPRESS IS COMING THROUGH,!!-! TOOT-TOOT. TOOT. Toooooooot.....i.y.k.y.k.!!!!! ("Q"). L.O.L.!!!!! OK. SEPT 29, 2023A.D.

Reminds me of the time when I was kid a steam train was going to come through this area. Me and relative knew where there was a railroad bridge that went over the tracks so we decided to get a really good view no one else would get. We climbed up into steel grid work of the bridge and waited.
Here comes that steam train puffing around the hill belching fire, black smoke and burning coal cinders about 200 feet in the air. We didn't have time to climb down out of the trestle. Burning cinders in my eyes, hair, up my nose and in my clothes. We got a good view alright.
