Actually, the Japanese audience might be inclined to care more in this case than in others. The original release of Bayonetta 1 was ONLY in an English dub because Hideki Namiya himself believed an English voice would simply fit better. Her character started off, for all intents and purposes, as Helena Taylor.
EDIT: Which isn't to say this situation is black and white good VS evil, obviously the situation is being made clearer now.
Holy bots
It’s must suck thought seeing the Japanese va for the same role make loads more money. English VAs are just not respected by companies for no reason.
These bots are getting boring
Not only that, but in general the Japanese audience has a huge amount of respect for voice actors from what I've seen

It sucks that VA's get disrespected like this and it needs way more attention to get something done about it

Ludvig! Please make an update on this situation, she was offered 4k for each session wich were supposed to be 5 of them, 20k then... 4x the normal rate for a 4hr session. She outright lied and threw under the bus her fellow va that has nothing to do with this...
TLDW : Hellena claims they offered $4k total, they actually offered $15-20K( $1000 per hour). She demanded $100K + Royalties. They said No, and replaced her with Jennifer Hale. @@TimKamiG what he ACTUALLY said is that he is always more inclined to side with the person over the corporation, plus all the facts weren’t out whenever this was made

What I find disgusting about this is that this is a reoccurring problem for all of the VA community. The fact that Companies think they can keep getting away with this with underpaying people who need this for their livelihood is insulting as fuck honestly
Also wanted to say that $4K is around 60 copies of the game which is even more depressing
Well they can get away with it, since there are in fact always other people to pick up these jobs. They know they can underpay people, because too many people are too eager to accept that pay. This is basically how it goes in any part of any entertainment industry. Heck this is how it goes in just about any workplace these days. People have become expendable, that is just a fact.

I've seen stuff like this before.
It seems like Platinum didn't want Hellena to voice Bayonetta, but rather than just replace her and make an excuse about it, they offered an abysmal amount of money that they knew she wouldn't accept so they would have an excuse to grab someone else, whilst simultaneously gagging Hellena with an NDA in the hopes nobody is the wiser. The fact they chose to lowball Hellena and then hire an even more expensive voice actor points to them just wanting Hellena out of the project.
If I'm not mistaken, one of the teasers "kills" off the Bayo that sounds like / has reused voice lines from Hellena in 3
Which if their right. They don't owe her a job.
This is probably exactly what happened. I feel like we don't have the full story here and I kinda don't like how she seems to try to manipulate this the way that she has when there's probably a reason why they only offered her $4k.
It's still wrong, and VAs are definitely underpaid, so it's still a good message to get out there and a good cause (Especially with the VA from Mob Psyco cause that sounds like it is the full or most of the truth). But... idk something seems a bit off about this one.
Hellena stated that she had to re-audition for the role and they still chose her, so I’m not sure if this makes sense
I think you’re the closest to the mark. Honestly I wish she got to be Bayonetta again, but I’m gonna play Bayonetta 3. IDC about industry politics that much.
I believe the whole point of the EXTREME low ball deal she got was so she wouldn’t take it and they’d be able to get another voice actress for Bayonetta, which makes 0 sense from any standpoint because you already have a voice actress of a major character whose made millions for this franchise. What are they not getting through their heads?
To be honest we all enjoyed the video because of this:

No idea why they couldnt just go "we have decided to go with new talent for the next game" rather than coming up with bullshit about scheduling and making a shit offer? Would have saved them a lot of grief if they handled it properly.
they probably wanted to be able to pay the voice actress less so they could make more money
@@connor1586 Not sure if voice actors are unionised but often it’s cheaper to make someone quit rather than fire them especially when unions are involved. The Mob VA's situation is insane. He wanted to leverage his position to make positive change after 2 good seasons, but whittled down his negotiation with CrunchyRoll to "please meet with a Union representative and speak with them about possibilities for union contracts in the future, just to see if we can find any common grounds. If not, oh well! It'd just be cool to melt some ice in this cold war against voice actor unions." And they not only refused to speak to anyone Union affiliated, even with no strings attached, but kicked the guy off the project. 'You're replaceable.' Unbelievable. The dude brought magic to Mob's character for 2 phenominal seasons and they're dropping him because of corporate selfishness.
Yeah even big time va like peter cullen also get pay dogshit for his role in the bays movies as optimus prime which is honestly insane and they also just rather hired impersonator than pay a fair wage.
It shows how afraid corporations are of unions. They whould rather take a massive PR hit and also let go of a great VA asset just to keep them away
Do you really expect better from CR??? The same company that disgustingly underpays it's translators aka the most important people for their business. The same people who actively tried to significantly decrease the video quality to save a few extra pennies. The same people who went around stealing fansubs without giving credit back in the day.

It seems like this is the trend when it comes to Japanese companies and American VAs. In Japan voice acting seems to be well respected, and people tend to reprise the role for as long as the character is around. Look at characters like Sailor Moon and Goku. Even Bayonetta kept the same voice actress in Japan, Atsuko Tanaka. It's wild that in the west, Voice Actors are considered expendable and replaceable, even though they quite literally create the character. They deserve to be treated on the same scale as actors do, it's honestly fucked up that Hollywood actors can swoop in and take their roles right out from under them or that studios can just decide to axe a voice actor because the person started to think about their working rights. It's probably just our working climate here, since society in the west loves to demonize unions.
Capitilism to the extreme
This is honestly surprising, since normally working conditions and treating people as expendable is far more common in Japan. Ig they got 1 thing right
Daisuke Jigen from Lupin III has had the same Japanese VA since the 60s.
Helena is the original Bayo voice tho, Bayo 1 had no japanese VA
Its not just a VA thing, the work culture in Japan is fucked. Its often expected that you spend as much as time as humanly possible going above and beyond for a company with minimal returns.
Little to no overtime and a culture of shunning holiday days and those who take them, sleeping at the office is pretty common at the detriment to family etc etc.
VAs from overseas are unfortunately held to these unrealistically one sided expectations too.

Not just VAs that are horribly underpaid, but manga/anime translators are, too. The rates for translating Jp > Eng for anything outside of the manga/anime industry is usually several times more, from what I remember. The "standard" rates for manga/anime kinda got set back when the people doing it were willing to be paid less because they were such big fans of the medium, & have never really improved.
It's a pretty awful situation because even as anime/manga became more and more mainstream over the last decade, the rates for translators pretty much remained "stuck on the floor" instead of being elevated alongside increasing revenue. The industry definitely has a lot to fix these days...
agree bro
Yeah, but apparently jp>eng anime and manga translators often do a pretty piss-poor job, to the extent of "fixing" certain concepts and lines that they don't like. I don't speak Japanese, or really care about anime or manga, but I hear this is a common gripe among bilingual weebs.
The funny thing is that the best part time translators for webnovels/lightnovels/manga who are not in the industry earn about the same amount as full time translators in the industry through patreon and ko-fi
Especially since they are usually stuck with horrible deadlines and funding. I remember the TL team for the jrpg game Trails in the Sky SC, a game with millions of japanese characters, had horrible deadlines and the whole team was stressed and underpaid for the whole project
4:50 The thing is, he actually does. He's been rapidfiring his blocks out for years now. He didn't just start doing this now to try and silence any and all criticism coming his way, he's simply doing what he always does. Nick Robinson made a video detailing the history and reasoning behind all these blocks, even meeting up with Kamiya IRL at the end of the video. Wouldn't be suprising if this prompted him to start doing it more frequently though...
That's still no excuse for what's happening right now. Sure, it's a funny gag in any other situation, but when people have questions and criticisms for how they treated a VA who's been voicing their character for multiple games, it's really bad for optics.
Some of it is understandable. People often ask him repeat or stupid question or trolling. He got tired of it, so he kept blocking. What got really unacceptable is when he starting blocking people to tweeted at him in English instead of Japanese. I can’t fathom that there aren’t at least a few Japanese trolls.
This shit always have been thinly veiled xenophobia and racism. Imagine the other way around if a white dev says "I'll block anyone speaking Japanese at me"
While I appreciate Nick Robinson's video for its entertainment value, it has done more harm in turning what is essential an unreasonable old xenophobic Japanese man into an endearing figure

Why are you specifically believing the company and commenting their side of the story like it's a fact?
the voiceactor's story seems much more likely to be true, as voiceactors being underpaid is a real issue + IF she was offered so much money, which is a rarity for voice actors, why would she have declined?
I'm not saying that she is 100% in the right, the truth is likely something between both versions of the story, but I'm just saying, why did you choose to blindly trust a report that lacks evidence?
@Cthulhu I'm aware, it's by Bloomberg, but you still shouldn't trust random sources on the internet.
There was no evidence and who the hell knows, it sounds like a conspiracy theory but PlatinumGames could have payed them to fix their image, which really isn't too unusual, I mean, companies literally payed to have their wikipedia articles changed to have them sound slightly more positive lmao

I feel so, so bad for Hellena Taylor. She deserved to be treated so much better for the amount of work she would have put into this game (VAs should be treated respectfully regardless, but specifically referencing Hellena here). Much love to her and her bravery for speaking out about this
It’s bad, though I don’t think it condones boycotting the game, as regardless plenty of work has been put in.
Platinum likely gave her a low offer as they wanted a better actress, i.e Hale. Taylor isn’t entitled to get the role just because she’s had it before especially when there’s a more experienced actress in the mix - she doesn’t “own” Bayonetta, though she may think she does.
Why?!
Y'all don't even know if she's telling the truth. You just assume she is.
We don't know shit about this situation. There is certainly A LOT going on behind the scenes.

After all, here she is asking people to boycott the game and throwing daggers at the new VA.
Not to mention, one of the developers responded on Twitter saying she was lying... When was the last time you seen that?!
And then there's the sense of entitlement.... You were Bayonetta's VA. You ARE NOT her and you have NO claim over the character. And have no right to say others shouldn't be able to enjoy the benefits of their work.
Not to mention, if she actually gave AF about the franchise, she wouldn't be trying to get people to boycott the damn game.
A TON of people have worked hard to develop this game. And Platinum Games itself, an indie developer, IS NOT doing well financially thanks to dealing with Square Enix.
This woman is trying burn everything down because she's angry about her own shit life and doesn't give AF about anyone else she hurts.

Pull the clothes off my back? I'd like to see them try". Breaking the nda also destroys any of her chances of getting a va job in the future. She has nothing to gain.
Platinum games isn't an indie anymore and the only reason they're doing bad financially is because of their own stupid choices. Very sad to realize that actions have consequences.
She has every right to be upset. She didn't just va her as a one and done deal, after the games released, she was constantly active in the community. On top of that Bayonetta is not a $450 million dollar franchise. It didn't sell well initially and was bargain bin. To date it is stated that Bayo 1 sold around 170,000 copies since the steam sale which is #20 bucks. No one knows where these numbers Taylor is spouting are coming from. For voice actors, it's the complete opposite. The game and the character itself is the face. The VAs does not contribute to sales. Bringing the characters to life? Yes, VA does that, but that is kinda the minimal requirement in voice acting. That's literally their job and you are saying they should get an extra bonus by performing what they are paid to do? It's like hiring an accountant and then getting blown away and giving them bonuses because they know how to do math. You do know that they could literally hire anyone that pass their voice acting test and it won't affect the sale even by a 0.000001%. The VAs contribute to helping to make a character, but they are not what makes the charcter. Then why don't the animators, modelers and the people who made the game get paid 100k as well? They're also the people putting life into the character, environment, story and world-building.
Ludwig still hasn't made a follow up video, after she admitted to lying and manipulating the audience. For a channel that's quick to hop on amy internet drama and create videos about it, this feels a bit disingenuous.
That's just what this channel is, hopping on drama. No dedication to truth and facts. Can't take anything serious anymore. Sad that so many people get manipulated by such youtubers.
The second story is pretty sad, Kyle’s a super talented guy. He kicked ass as Alm in FE echoes: Shadows of Valentia, and he’s the voice of the fan-favorite gatekeeper NPC in FE Three Houses
@Anth Romer that doesn’t diminish the work that he puts into voicing the character

So nice of ludwig to allow mogul mail to use their twitter account for such stories

well, thanks for spreading this misleading message for that greedy liar and without having an update LMAO

I hope he has the integrity to at least do a short update video. Telling his audience to boycott a game over false claims would be a shitty thing to do.

100% it's obviously not intentional on his part but still a shame to see, I hope he does a recap or atleast takes this video down
I can't think of a better word than what she used to describe the $4000 offer to voice Bayonetta. ITS INSULTING
Probably low on purpose so they could get rid of her. Saying Hale can’t call herself Bayonetta simply because she’s in shoes worn by a previous (less accomplished) actress - that’s insulting. And petty.
@@walrus2515 That part gets swept under the rug. Four videos, where she tells fans to boycott the game, denies Jennifer Hale as the character, goes on about how many years she spent learning to act and how much she paid for those lessons, it all points to unwarranted self importance. Sounds to me like she overestimated her worth and demanded a gigantic salary, then became difficult to work with until they reached breaking point and gave her a low offer to get rid of her.

Ludwig: You weren't supposed to do that
Man voice actors and animators always get shafted by producers and it makes me very sad
Also translators
And coders, pretty much everyone that's actually vital to create a game
Video game voice actors have been quietly getting the short end of the stick for a long ass time.. It's nice to see someone finally being heard and actually gaining some traction
Maybe that just means there’s a surplus of talent who can easily do the job and shouldnt be paid that much? What’s with these stupid takes? Content creators are waaay overpaid for the little shit they do.
@@TheUnpred1cTable ????????????????????? What?
@@Zyscheriah what dont you understand?
@@TheUnpred1cTable you are saying a person who honed their craft should not be paid what they think they're worth.
You're implying that multi-million companies can only afford to pay $4000 to an artist/VAs, etc and that they should be paid less.
edit: 5 > 4
@@Zyscheriah lol that’s a terrible logic. If that was the case, every company out there would go bankrupt or resort to automation with the lack of willingness to hire any other human being. With your logic, if i think im worth $1m/yr, should the company pay up? Of course not. They would counter offer with what they think is fair price. Value is relative and heavily influenced by supply and demand. With so many voice actors out there, the company deemed that the lady isn’t worth that much as there are people with the same skill set are willing to do it for the same price if not less. The amount of hrs put into the practice to hone their talent is moot.
So Ludwig are you gonna update this? Some of the fools in your comment section are still bashing me over this.
He updated it in the update sheet you can see in newer video s

Well, this Mogul Mail entry didn't age well. Now that the other side of the story has been revealed...Taylor doesn't look very much like a victim aymore.
What happened, what was revealed??
@@robertoangileri6151 she lied
@@robertoangileri6151 That it was 4k per 4h session with 5 sessions booked, for a total of 20k, which is actually a higher pay than industry standard. Keep in mind this was CAPCOM's offer, CAPCOM was willing to pay her more than the standard. She instead wanted at least 100k and royalties and was replaced because of her demands. When she asked if she could still take part to the project, she was offered 4k for a cameo, so yeah, she technically was offered 4k for the entire game... but in a minor role that would have taken tops 1 or 2 hours of recording, which is actually a very good deal. She hid the pay of her original contract and that the "4k for the whole game" was going to be for a cameo, not as Bayonetta.
@@KyrieFortune damn, I'm so dissapointed, why did she lie... She was loved by all the community...
Update: she wanted 6 figures after doing nothing for about 8 years.
this is why you always wait for the whole story to come out before making any conclusions smh.
The main character in a highly successful series should be in the 6 figures. Anything below 100k would be insulting.
@@yizeverienametaken100K is an "insult" to everyone else who worked on the game making considerably less.
At the end of the day the series isn't THAT successful (otherwise they wouldn't have needed Nintendo's help in financing to complete the second game, not to mention it initially being released on Wii U probably didn't help), nor are people buying Bayonetta games just to hear that one voice actor.

Honestly the stuff that came out of this made me sick. Some evidence came out that alleges that she may have lied, and that she was offered more money. I want to wait until all the information is on the table before making an opinion. The reason why it makes me feel sick is that my old job was effected by my reputation with the clients. My current job is effected by my reputation with management (but that is every job). My company and I have worked really hard to have a good reputation with people we try to help, and that effects how people treat our employees.
cant wait for your next update video on this!
one thing that was really eye opening for me was sean chiplock (voice of revali in botw) made more from 2 offscreen lines in detective pikachu than the entirety of the botw work
Damn.
voice actors are all so incredible, they bring to life the content (alongside every other creative on any given team) that we all consume. the fact is that they do not, and for the most part never have, gotten the financial credit they deserve.
I started watching mob psycho recently and it made me very sad the great voice i had gotten used to would not be there in the future, i really hope he gets his job back.
she lied, the end.
Glad to see you cover this and allowing more people to know more about the problems that come with voice acting! I really respect that you use your platform to do things like this.
0:25 - ludwig's pyro moment
a man of culture indeed
Now that more info has come out I’m actually appalled by Taylor’s actions. She completely took advantage of the ver real issue of underpaid VA’s to boycott a game for not giving her the totally unrealistic amount she actually asked for.
It was obvious something was fishy about this considering Platinum ended up with Jennifer Hale, one of the biggest names in the voice acting industry, and very clearly going to cost more than the 4k they were accused of offering. But people/Ludwig wanted to run with it anyways because it fits the easy narrative against the big company.
It seems like she lied about it. They said she was offered around 4K per 4h session which isn't that bad.
Hideki has always loved the block button, he probably see's this drama as a chance to block even more people he doesn't want to see
Whoa, I didn't expect you to cover this. I'm so used to seeing VAs getting fucked over and forgotten about. Thank you Mogul Mail
actually 4k a session for 5 sessions so 20k doesn't seem that bad boycotting it seems a bit ridiculous to me
Title of this video didn't age well. Lol
Voice actors have been at the bottom of the pay and respect ladder for a long time. With the rise in popularity of the people behind the voices I hope more and more of them will start to be treated right. It’s sad but they ultimately need more public perception or they are simply treated like cogs in the machine.
@bowen voowy She lied… Stop defending bad people
Voice actors get paid crap but thats the whole creative industry. When i worked in film out in los angeles as a set builder i was literally worked to the point of being hospitalized and nearly died because of it. I was paid a total of $3500 for 4 sets made by only me in 4 weeks, which wasnt the original agreement. and then wasnt paid to be on site and was threatened with being blackballed from film if i didnt show up. I was on set for 5 months no pay. Had to live there because i was doing repairs after hours due to careless directors. It was 20hr days on set and 22 hr days while building them. I was also required to drive the semitruck to and from site which wasnt discussed prior and i wasnt licensed for. Half way through the second location i broke the tip of my finger using a tool because i was falling asleep standing up at random andusing powertools at the same time. The last week my body collapsed and i was forced to be hospitalized for three weeks, i came out with damage to multiple organs and severe mental issues that took me a year and a half to manage.

I didn't expect Ludwig to post news from the VO community
Neat!
I took a voice acting class from the VA that played Aurora Unit 242 in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. She said the Nintendo writers and directors made her stand in the booth for two days solid while they argued over how every line should be delivered, and basically made her take three times as long as it should have because they all wanted to have a pissing match with each other.
She also had a migraine and was ill at the time, which didn’t help her condition at all.
This happened to the voice of Claptrap for the Borderlands franchise but it was much quieter. Sick of companies doing this. It was a big reason I didn't get BL3 and now Bayonetta 3 big sad
