I was terrified too until I was 10 yo, now I keep them as pets for about 17 years.

I'm very glad you point out how dangerous it is for the SPIDER to handle, not vice versa. People, especially younger ones, tend to forget that after all those are very fragile animals.
The bite from a bird eater can do incredible mechanical damage on par with being stabbed.

Most people hate those things.
Centipedes also prey on roaches, but I doubt people will willingy have one roaming around their house.

This tarantula is infamous for having some of the most irritation urticating hairs in the hobby. This would be an excellent pet for an advanced keeper, or someone who is totally ok with respecting the nature of this awesome beast.
If you're not okay with the nature of the animal, you shouldn't have ANY pet

I’m fine with its nature, but the hairs...nope.
They also tend to look very tattered and rough. I usually steer people towards L parahybana instead of a theraphosa. They are almost as big, not quite as irritating, and more striking in color than the ratty brown Theraphosas are.
yeah and only in the theraphosa family you got urticating hairs with barbs so they hard to come off too
Loving the Tarantula Content! Their urticating hairs are NO joke...from experience I can attest to how itchy they can be. And it can be dangerous if those hairs get in your eyes 👀

Exactly, thanks for this comment. They are also not as easy to keep as other Ts, so definitely one for experienced keepers.

funny you say that since most people are concerned far more with their bite even though it isnt as bad as the hairs they release
I actually used to catch tarantulas in my backyard when i was a kid and one time I got a nose full of hair that was not a good day :^(
Today I was at Pet Smart and one of the employees told a gentleman and his two daughters that they could keep a leopard Gecko or a Bearded Dragon in a small critter keeper. Once the helper left I went over and told him he could keep it in a Critter keeper for about long enough to drive home with it but that both would need a basking light, and that I knew that a Bearded dragon would need UVB light for sure and at least a 40 or 50-gallon long enclosure. I told him to watch your channel before he got one or the other.

(Not-so) Fun fact: There was an orchestra conductor, who accidentally hit his own foot with this baton-thingy conductors use to swing around. He refused to get medical attention for it - and died couple of days later from infection that developed in the wound.

I almost adopted a Jumping Spider when I was helping my friend tend to his indoor lettuce plants. One day this really cool hairy spider came along and seemed to show some sings of intelligence. I looked into the topic and learned that they could be quite inquisitive. I ended up simply sharing some misty water with the fella and doing little things to ensure that conditions were hospitable whenever I saw him walking around on the plants.

There's a cartoon in production, pilot's out but the series proper isn't ready yet, with a character that makes people confused about both their sexuality and their arachnophobia. Hazbin Hotel. I'm looking forward to it.

I do have a mild form of arachnophobia - meaning yes I'm really scared for no reason of certain spiders, but I'm not losing my mind over it (meaning, I don't panic) and it's not the same for all spiders.
For some weird reason, I'm not particularly scared of tarantulas and alike. I think I could even get myself to handle one, if I had to. It's things like huntsman spiders, common house spiders (things like Tegenaria domestica or Tegenaria parietina); the ones which have a mix of being large and being very skittish. It doesn't have anything to do with the actual threat they are (which is basically zero for most of them), it's the sudden, fast movement which scares me the most for some reason.

The term “Bird Eater” doesn’t really represent the nature of these spiders, since enough people in the arachnoculture circle know that tarantulas rarely eat birds. I have only seen one video of a tarantula eating a bird, and it wasn’t even titled as a bird eater. It was a King Baboon. If anything. I have seen more vids of giant tarantulas eating pit vipers; mainly the Bothrops lance head vipers (Fer de Lance) of Central and South America. So if zoologists really want arachnophobes to soil themselves, they should change the “Bird Eater” moniker to something like “Snake Slayer” or “Viper Slayer.”
As a tarantula keeper (theraphosa included) i do not recomend using heat elements AT ALL. Warm your room, not the enclosure. The tarantula will look for the heat and cook itself. This is a humidity required species also so really good ventilation in the enclosure is a must. Tom from Tom's Big Spiders has a really good care video about them if you are interested.
Also dont handdle it. The hairs are nasty and get worst the more you get exposed to them.
My T Stirmi is now arround 7 inches and she is GORGEOUS

@@keksidy I think id be fine if it was in the wild, then I'd have room to leave it alone. I would probably reflexively freak out a little bit if one was in my home. Then again, most animals don't like to share their dens with uninvited guests, so I figure the spider will understand when I escort him outside. Gently.

Just a heads up, Theraphosa are more likely to have issues molting when they get REALLY large. Mine had to be syringe fed to the next molt since both of her fangs broke off. She is all fine now but I feel like this would be a little too much for a very very new keeper. Their feeding response is awesome though :D

I saw one of these in a pet shop once. It took off at lightning speed and I damned near knocked over a shelf of goods trying to get away. 😂 They are VERY fast.
This channel along with snake discovery are my favorite reptile channels. Every time a new video comes out my heart starts racing. I love that Clint and his team do so much research and really try to give the best possible information, along with encouraging people to do their own research. Keep being “Rad”.

I have arachnophobia but I gotta say this is a very beautiful tarantula. It's head has such a beautiful pattern, it's legs and the color is so pretty. I'm amazed on how big this thing is. There had to be even bigger ones when the dinosaurs roamed...
Well, nope, during the Mesosoic oxygen levels were similar to today, so Arthropods couldn't get bigger than today.However, before the dinosaurs during the Carboniferous period the world was mostly covered by massive tropical swamps(also being by far the biggest source of fossil fuels today)wich made the oxygen level as high as 35%, because of this bugs trully got giant. Look it up yourself since i don't wanna spoil all of those nightmares.

i have a 2 yr old theraphosa stirmi never kicked hairs at me ever since i got her at 1" so im thankful.
the only thing that scares me about her is her feeding response. she is lightning fast and teleports at every breath or vibration she feels. scares the crap out of me when i accidentally breathe over her LOL

I absolutely love theraphosa's but oh my god i think I'd have nothing but heart attacks if I had one with that speed.
My T. apophysis is the same, lightening fast but likes yours has never kicked hairs and when I rehoused her she was as good as gold, she walked into catch up and then straight out into her new enclosure without any fuss. Not like some of my others 😒😂😂

Love how at the end they lured me into laughing at "butt fingers" and then immediately followed it up with a scene that nearly gave me a heart attack
I've had two of these, a male and a female. Never even came close to being bitten, though I did get hairs in my eye once (not because they kicked them, but because I had them on my finger after handling and forgot to wash my hands before rubbing my eye). They need more humidity than most New Worlds, and obviously a larger enclosure. They weren't any more skittish than any of my other T's, but I handled them every day. They were an absolute delight, and would sit with me watching TV for hours. Both were wild caught adults and only lived a few years, and saying goodbye was hard.
Thank you for doing inverts and amphibians as well as reptiles. I truly value the information that you provide and I keep and love all kinds of animals. Keep doin what you do.

I agree! I have two of them, one normal and one striped phase. Mine aren’t super blue on top, but their bellies are this gorgeous iridescent slate blue.
Have you not seen the hundred-flower rat snake? Nothing could possibly have a more beautiful pattern.

Great video! I do want to point out that many people may think they require higher temps as they come from rainforests, but they actually live in holes under the ground, where temps are much lower and constant.

My absolute favorite genus ❤ we keep all 3 species, currently have a male and female blondi, female stirmi and female apophysis. All great spiders to keep as long as you respect what they can do and stay mindful of the hairs. Love this video man. Always good to see more tarantula content 😃

I can save you effort on the agamas, they suck, easy to care for, horrible personality. I can't offer any input on the collard lizards though.

Very flighty lizard, they stress easily to the point of you even entering the room causes a major flight response. They really do not like being around people at all, not even if you hatch them from eggs like I did

Dr. Mugleston is an awesome source of knowledge! He even tries to go Latin for the scientific names. Usually they're pronounced very americanized in the US. You should consider having him on the show again for tarantula/spider content.

it should have probably been mentioned that Lasiodora parahybana common name is "salmon pink bird eater". Could 100% see new keepers looking at a sling in a petstore that only has the common name listed and thinking they are going to be getting 1/3 theraphosa

A friend of mine had one of those. It was a really chill female. Sadly I think it died during molting. Spiders really aren't for rookies for so many reasons.

Having raised one to maturity, I will 100% definitely say this is easily one of the WORST pet tarantulas someone could ever imagine if they are newer to the hobby.
You really have to keep it humid but not muddy. You highly need a springtail colony added or else.
They are fragile but incredibly strong. Those inch long fangs have the force of lion claws. Seriously. When mine attacked his foliage, it was a lost cause. A human being cannot remove one who is attacking without injury to the spider. Not to forget when near penultimate molt inch long fangs. The mechanical damage is very severe and way more than a pet cat and even many pet dogs can do.
Those urticating hairs. It isn't just an itch and discomfort. For theraphosa it is best described as prickly pear cactus needles in abundance. You will burn. You will blister. Like me, eventually you'll get a few in your eye that itch like hell and have to be removed for a few hundred bucks. These are not, no way, no how typical urticating hairs. They are pure devil's ass.
Despite all this, I am not in any fashion saying not to get one if you are into tarantulas. The size, attitude, and care are good to learn and may provide you with an incredibly fun pet that legit everyone visiting LOVES to see. Even if afraid of spiders, people seeing a 10"+ spood drop some profanity and admit how awesome it is of an animal.
Just in the end, please do not get one unless you have all of your basics down and are willing to deal with the attitude and hairs. If not, sorry you won't enjoy one. If so, it will be such a great experience. :D
@Mexican seafood both of y’all are way over exaggerating it. I have both the OBT and Theraphosa apophysis. If you give them the proper housing and are gentle with them they are fine. I’ve never had any issues with either of them

I think the popularity of the goliath bird water would probably go down, but people's reaction to hearing their name would probably improve, if only because cockroaches are really unpopular animals and people usually root for whatever eats them.
Hi, great video! As an arachnid keeper (mostly spiders and scorpions) I love your videos on spiders. I started 21 years ago and had many of new world Ts but later moved to old worlds. I would just like to point out that the urticating hairs of NW Ts are bad in the long run. If you come into contact with them for extended time you will develop intolerance and the effects will get worse. Handling a T should be kept to minimum (if at all) and in case of some species like e.g. Lasiodora parahybana it is not only handling that can get you haired. They kick the hairs on their webs.
Yes wear gloves, possibly a mask if you're dealing with an individual who kicks a lot! Also I wish Clint would mention how important scientific names are to the hobby lol. Another interesting hair transfer technique is with Avics, apparently they don't kick they just rub their booty on a surface, or poop on you, they'll probably poop on you first though. You might be able to attest to that, I'm not sure how true it is.

Used to be an arachnophobiast. Brachypelma like the Mexican red knee tarantula turned me into an arachno-freak. They look like 8 legged plush toys to me. There are a lot ex- arachnophobia havers in the Tarantula owner society's.
It's so cute when they draw their legs in close to hide their face. I've seen smaller spiders do it when I'm taking pictures after capturing them. It's like they're afraid to try and run and they resolve that they've been captured and just hope for the best as you stick cameras in their face and slide rulers under them. Probably shielding their eyes from video lights.

I've held a Goliath birdeater before. They're not that bad. They're actually pretty chill.....if you don't poke em!!!
