Janelle. Thank you for your reply. You may be new to pottery but your video is a quite an advanced technique. Just a suggestion- mix a combo one part stain to one part gertsley borate. The GB will flux the stain and affix it to the clay when it is biscuit fired. Also add water to dilute it. The trick will be the right amount of water to keep it transparent and not opaque . We shall keep at our quest for success!

Hi there, great vid thanks. Im curious as to why the image stays on the clay once fired as your not printing w any kind of ceramic material but just the actually ink from the printer...is that right or have I misunderstood? Thanks
Hi jess, some hp and Canon laser printers have a high concentration of iron oxide in the toner powder. And that doesn't burn out in a kiln. It turns a sepia rust like colour. Hope that helps 😊
I Janelle. Sorry for the long delay in posting my test results. Unfortunately almost all of my mason stain and a variety of clear glazes tests- in all cases my transfers was eaten by the clear(over the mason stain or clear alone). The area of the transfer not covered by stain or clear did come through the firing good, - The image was clear. I tried light coats, medium and heavy coats of mason stain with clear coats and all transfers were unsuccessful. Perhaps my glaze firing temperature is too high. I fire to cone 6-mid range stoneware, about 2232 degrees Fahrenheit. May I ask what temp / cone you are firing to? Maybe a lower temperature will allow the image to come through the clear. Are you doing low fire earthenware? Thanks and Happy New Year
Hi Willie that's a shame. If I'm putting the transfer on greenware I bisque fire as normal then added stain and fired to cone ten? 1280c. If I added the transfer on top of glaze I use a regular decal firing temp which is bisque 980c or I've tried 1100c.
Fellow potter here. What a great informative video. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I have a toner print waiting to go into the kiln and I am keeping my fingers crossed! Followed your instructions step by step -so far so good. If the image comes through on the bisque I would like to ask you about the last part where you talked about mason stain and clear. Do you just dilute some stain with water . Do you have a ratio of stain to water to make sure its transparent? You then said you cover this with clear? One test you did has only stain with no clear ( 2nd from left) So the mason stain with water also works without adding the clear over? I hope my questions make sense. Thank you again for sharing this terrific image transfer technique.
Willie C hi there I'm still experimenting myself 😃 I had a brush on clear that that didn't eat the toner, but I had mason stains painted onto the image. My test with just the brush on clear ate some of the toner. My dipping clear didn't work very well. So I'd just do some little tests for yourself. I have discovered that if I paint on a little coat of joining slip to the area I want to transfer to. It transfers beautifully. And I can do it on much drier clay up to almost leather hard. Whereas previously I was putting it on quite wet clay and getting the transfer was tricky depending on the clay moisture. Good luck for your firing. 😃
Willie C my mason stains were mixed with a little powdered slip and water. I'm not sure what the powdered slip contained as I just bought it from a community studio and they said to use three parts powder to one part mason stain. Plus water. I've since used stains without it and they were a lot more powdery once fired. So I used floor wax to buff them. For sculpture. Sorry I can't be more helpful but I'm quite new to pottery and still working stuff out 😂
So you are actually firing to a higher temperature than I am. So that rules out the high firing temps as causing the problem. I am puzzled as to what I am doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is your clear glaze is different from mine and unfortunately I am in the USA and it’s not sold here. I tried about 4 different clear glazes I use and they all ate the transfer image 😕
Yes the brush on clear I used ate it but not when I brushed stain on first. I'm completely puzzled as to why it worked. It's Duncan G L 612 diamond clear gloss glaze. But like I said by itself it didn't work. And I haven't tested stain with my other clear dipping glaze
Hello, has anyone had issues with different paper? I bought a HP LaserJet M15, and I've tried printing on both sides of my greaseproof paper - neither of them transfer at all (zilch!) to my fresh clay. Might try another type of paper. The strip that printed onto my masking tape did transfer.

I'm using baking paper which might be different to grease proof or waxed paper
