MOST ICONIC band in the world. So glad my parents introduced me to them! Maurice White was a genius!
They're just FABULOUS Musicians PERIOD!
I always thought Maurice’s vocals were so underrated
Definitely! 💯
We are people of the mighty
Mighty people of the sun
In our hearts lie all the answers
To the truth you can't run from
Yes yes
Philip Bailey was in the STRATOSPHERE with that high note. I was at least an E Flat 7…man was in 7 octaves above middle C…
You never heard this song before? This is the song they played for the Soul Train dance line. I can not not move when I hear this song.
This song were their first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1974. It peaked at the #28 spot. The song also peaked at the #4 spot on the Billboard Soul chart as well.
This is the period of time before they added the bigger horn section on That's The Way of The World. After that album, with Spirit, they further evolved into the tightest horn section known to man, doing things one record not previously heard. Not the biggest, but the tightest. This is when Andrew Woolfolk (top center) did most of the woodwinds (saxes, clarinet). So what you hear is the dominant rhythm section (bass Verdine White is left of center front center, rhythm guitar is Al Mckay top right, drums and by leader Maurice White in the center and Ralph front far right) with the keyboard (Larry, front far left on organ here I think) playing parts that might later on be horn parts. Before adding the horn section they were a heavy percussion-afro-Latin-jazz driven band (2 drummers and congas by Phil Bailey the screaming falsetto right of front center). Top left is Johnny Graham on lead blues-rock guitar. There was another drummer added (Fred White, not shown, prolly on the next album). This was their best core lineup. It only got better from here.
The band always had a very strong "Afrocentric" core:
1. The clothes are mostly modeled on those of ancient Egyptian royalty. The Boogie Wonderland video especially. Look at the sides of the Egyptian columns and tombs
2.The album covers of ancient Egypt.
3. The lyrics." We are mighty, mighty people of the sun." i.e. dark skin. "You're a shining star. No matter who you are."
Even after EW&F crossed over BIG TIME to white audiences in 1975 and the That's the Way of the World album, the Afrocentricity remained
Words well spoken...this was a good post bruh...to a "T"!
Not disco. This is straight funk
Str8 up Funk !!!!
Whoo this brought back childhood memories!
Earth Wind & Fire with an extra funky track from way back!!
to the truth you can run from. we are people of the mighty
its a little known instrumental by the called power
Earth Wind And Fire The Greatest Band Ever Always Touches Me Deep In My Heart And Soul 🙏💖🙏
1972 i was the 4th grade skating and being Funky When Things Were Cool 😎 😎😎
Ohhhh...My top all time favorite EW&F❤❤ from the early years. This song got the party started at my uncles wedding in 1974 ooo great memories
💃🕺thanks Just Jammin 👍👍✌
Listen to Andrew Woolfork RIP 😢 on sax
I remember Jamin this song in my bedroom and the old lady next door would come bang on my window and yell “can you turn it down!!!” Nooooo!!!! I can’t !!!!😂😂😂😂
Iam old school, please listen to Earth wind and fire. It will blow you away every time, and there is a lot other's and groups of that Era that will just fasanate you real bands real music. And your doing fine by the way
Yes, not disco. This was before disco came into being. And even when they dabbled in disco---Boogie Wonderland----they made it their own and brought complex poly-rhythms and an African-infused energy to the style. MIGHTY, MIGHTY is straight ahead funk written by Maurice and his brother, Verdine. As someone said, this is pre-Charles Stepney, who expanded their arrangements and sent them into a deeper, more musically complex direction. But it's interesting that you can hear, even in this incarnation of the sound, their quest for musical and spiritual depth.
ron covington:. True. Can't say it enough. This is not disco.
This is one of their many spiritual conscious songs
MAURICE IS MURDERING THESE VOCALS AND PHILLIP'S SOARING NOTES MAKE ME HIGH WITH HAPPINESS!!! THIS SONG RIGHT HERE USED ME TO MAKE MY BROTHERS AND ME ACT AN ABSOLUTELY FOOL!!!!
Head To The Sky was probably their first major hit...but if you really want to see what Earth, Wind, & Fire was all about just listen to the Gratitude lp...That's them, all in a double lp!!!
This song came out when I was a freshman in high school. Many radio stations would not play this song because they thought it was all about black power which of course it was not.. many EWF songs have messages we just gotta listen❣
Just jammin haven’t hear this song by them in years. It wasn’t as powerful as their other popular tracks but I enjoy it and the message it’s has.
Just want to mess with you....lol....but i know you are learning and dont know....disco music had a beat with orchestral sound, continuous pulsating beat....this is straight up funk with no strings
Jay Kemp:. True. You dance to disco. Funk makes you dance.
My first EWF album. All great tracks. Try out "Devotion" from same release.
Great request. But, I suggest "Devotion" on the Gratitude album.
This was the first EWF song I heard as a kid. Still love it!
Mine too and me too!
@@dgodfrey8953 😊👍
"Evil" got me first, but "Mighty Mighty" came along a few months later and became my favorite. Still lights me up every time I hear it. Of course, most EWF does!
Black People Will Rise To Top Keeping Our Heads Up 🙏☺
This was a JAM!!!
"Mighty people of the sun - In our heart lies all the answers"👊🔴⚫🟢🟡💜
Your selection is top notch
I play this song at all the Black History month celebrations. The message is wonderful! I first heard this when I was in college in the seventies. It got me through!
Oh man great choice!
This was definitely early in their career. It sounds so much better live. At your leisure you should watch Earth,Wind and Fire live by request. I think you will enjoy it. I am a fairly new subscriber and love your reactions. Hope you see this.
An addendum. EW&F also melded Hinduism and Budhhism in their music. Head to The Sky is straight up Hinduism. Ditto for the song Devotion.
Pre 1975 before Charles Stepney came on board. A more funky era with great messages and instrumentals. Now...you are ready for Devotion. Look for a 1975 live version...still spectacular today!
Stepney produced this. This was his first album working with EWF.
This is one of their earlier hits....not sure if its their first hit but definately one of their first...this is when EWF were more on the funky side before they mellowed out and were more musical....btw....i had to laugh when you said they sounded disco.....lollll....this sounds nothing like disco.....this is straight up funk
Not close to disco. Tighten up your music history.
Too funky for disco. Not even close. No strings. Way different.
THIS IS FUNK
early ewf ,more funky less pop, that was their next album.
How did you start your dreadlocks ?
2 strand twisting.
