I've been playing for 10 years and always had issues playing fast alternate picking and when I tried to put my pick at 45 degrees I was like O.O Can't believe such a small tip like that improved my playing dramatically. Andy James is my new hero :D
Paul Gilbert discussing in one of his instructional videos that he likes to start alt picking phrases off with an upstroke, at least I believe that's what he said. Anyways, I found that starting certain phrases with an upstroke helped me play faster for whatever reason.
Hi gallion lion, these videos are short clips as they were left over from a webcast which we did with Andy James back in 2010. If you after lessons on speed and accurancy with Andy James let us know and we can direct you to the relevant DVD. All the best Licklibrary!
thanks for the tip, i used some of the scale patterns you showed already but i can't even touch the speed you played through it. anyways, i'll keep practicing till the day i can play that fast. to all the people at lick library, keep up the amazing playing!
I recently had that penny drop moment. And his face summarised it perfectly. After years of frustration that I couldnt alternate pick scales properly, now I can, meh... Now I'm on to the next thing I cant do!
Just a question here. In building up technique, muscle memory, and stamina when diving into this how long are the intervals of time? Is it three minutes.
The little new nugget I got from this is to try and think about accents, something we all do automatically, but probably a major part of why sometimes my playing feels liquid and sometimes I have potato hands.
Not at all, some players (like Satriani or Garsed) pick as little as possible but its for the legato sound that it creates. Played like Zakk Wylde and Al Di Meola pick everything for that more aggressive percussive sound. Others like Paul Gilbert Try to get a nice balance
I have been playing the guitar for 4 and half years and bass for 1 year. About two and half years ago I started to get speed in my fingers and I increased it naturaly, which now lets me play solos like Enter Sanmdan and Symphony of destruction. The bass is basicly the same thing. Plus, if start with the guitar and then jump from the guitar to the bass you´ll find the bass much easier to play cuz the guitar has much of the bass tricks. Just play naturaly and calmly and you´ll get there with time.
I think it's also about synchronization between the two hands. A slightly slower but accurately picked run to me is much more impressive than a faster but unclear or sloppy run.
Do you have a video where you show examples of practice schedules. I meen like no guitarrist on the internet (I've searched alot) shows a clear practice schedule. Like how often and how much time should I spend each day on each lick/technique to see results. If you dont have a video about that, perhaps you could make one. I am a HUGE Andy James fan so I would be very happy if he did the lesson, because I love the way he's playing and the style. Thank you, hope you'll reply soon!
I've been practicing that little Gibert lick for over 10 years. I still can't play it very fast. I always hit the upper string when coming back from the lower string.
@koenie201 depends on how much you work on it, it could take a week, it could take a month but if you take it slow and gradually build up good technique and dont do it sloppy all of a sudden ull be andy james!
@intii93 judging from your post, you have the patience and discipline to get things done. Just make sure your wrist is relaxed (firm but relaxed. squeezing the pick for high attack and small movement is different from flexing your whole arm). It's just going to take a great deal longer than 1 1/2 years. time is on your side, take advantage of it and you'll be shredding like it's cloud 9 in no time.
@SatyrX09 there are a lot of versatile guitarists. Nuno Bettencourt, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Rick Emmett, Steve Hackett, John Frusciante, Paul Gilbert etc. Not comparing their chops, but all these guys are very versatile.
at 1:02 its 11 12 14 on d string and the 11 on g (UPSTROKE!) then come back down again exactly reverse remember strictly use alternate picking up and down afterwards he moves 2 frets down and does the same then down step again then return to normal position and go 2 step up twice hope that helps
@shreddernuo Haha no problem. And most music stores, at least ones that cater to guitarists, have them. I got mine at the local shop. If there's a Guitar Center near you, I know they have them, but pretty much anywhere that sells guitar accessories. If you don't have any luck there, it's really easy to find them online. Just Google "guitar footstool." And most are adjustable, so if you're really short or tall, or just sitting in a different-sized chair, you should be okay. Hope that helps!
Hi Andy, I've been practising guitar for a year and a half now... Is there a tutuorial for the riffs for the song "The End".. I'm just not able to follow that song..
I've felt the elbow strain at times. How do i get over it??
when him and Danny Gill say 45 degree angle, i wish they could be a bit more specific. as in angle to the strings, ground, angle from the pointy part of the pick? im confused.
this guy is an absolute monster on the guitar!
Mad props Andy for giving paul gilbert the credit as the master of alternate picking!
@ Danuet
"He said it 48 times in 4:28. That's a 'you know' every 5.58 seconds!!!"hahahahaahahaha
He says "you know" 50 times in this video. I counted.
lol OMG. Its a lot of "you know". 😂😂
So you should know.........
...and stuff like that...
It's common
😂
Andy is by far the best metal oriented guitar instructor around!
Great, with you I can get better at guitar and my British accent at the same time.
I've been playing for 10 years and always had issues playing fast alternate picking and when I tried to put my pick at 45 degrees I was like O.O
Can't believe such a small tip like that improved my playing dramatically.
Andy James is my new hero :D
Put 2:11 and captions on
great lesson, probably one of the most important on youtube..thanks andy!
Paul Gilbert discussing in one of his instructional videos that he likes to start alt picking phrases off with an upstroke, at least I believe that's what he said. Anyways, I found that starting certain phrases with an upstroke helped me play faster for whatever reason.
Thanks for all the lessons, Andy, you´re a great influence!

Post goes out every Tuesday to Middle Earth it can take a while - thankyou for your patience!
I recently had that penny drop moment. And his face summarised it perfectly. After years of frustration that I couldnt alternate pick scales properly, now I can, meh... Now I'm on to the next thing I cant do!
Wow! That gave me a whole lot of perspective!
This guy is incredible, it's so clean FFS!
Exceptional sir! Thank you much!
The penny drops...........and I can play like Andy James.
it's has been almost 4 years since i first started to learn alternate picking, now i am pretty good at it , but still so much to learn

@ManiQu Hi there, yes you can contact Andy via our Forum. We will send you a link to your youtube inbox, hope it helps!
"I used to be a huge zakk wylde fan". .
...until I became 3x better
Zakk Wylde would smoke you a guitar battle
+Timmy Allison He's saying andy is better than zakk dude...
J Schecter Haha... Yeah. Andy is way better. Not only technically, but he plays with a lot more "feel".
Yeah the whole pentatonic scale and pinch harmonic every note thing gets boring pretty fast maybe even annoying (at least to my ears)
Corry Burton no he cant, hence why he hasent lol. Zakk can not be compared to an andy james lol. He would be the first to tell you.
He motived me to practice moor and don't give up
great guitar player
Thnx this gave me some great tips and advice
Just a question here. In building up technique, muscle memory, and stamina when diving into this how long are the intervals of time? Is it three minutes.
Thank you very much!
This guy is really good, clean and his note choice are nice. His shredding is really nie listening to.
Good thing he explained it. I should be able to play like that with no problem now. :)
i love your tone man!
Andy James, you da man! ..... Gill and James are my favs from LL. ;-)
The little new nugget I got from this is to try and think about accents, something we all do automatically, but probably a major part of why sometimes my playing feels liquid and sometimes I have potato hands.
You know, you're great teacher, you know ! :D
even though im not very fond of your lessons, all your guitarists are great
Not at all, some players (like Satriani or Garsed) pick as little as possible but its for the legato sound that it creates. Played like Zakk Wylde and Al Di Meola pick everything for that more aggressive percussive sound. Others like Paul Gilbert Try to get a nice balance
It's been done and passed over to the Facebook team, expect it to be up soon!
I don't know;)

This vid was a great help as im trying to learn the solo for Scream by Avenged Sevenfold. Thanks!
Amazing..om andy james
holy crap, dude even after this i cant play as fast as u like at 3:10 thats just skill
I think it's also about synchronization between the two hands. A slightly slower but accurately picked run to me is much more impressive than a faster but unclear or sloppy run.
No, Michael's video starts with a 16th note exercises 11 12 14 11 12 11 14 12 11 etc (obviously with the string change in the same place!)
A god in human form🎸
I learned how to say "you know" in this video. haha
+1 for drum machine
And damn these lessons are killer, wish I had these back when I was learning to play. You yung'uns better eat this shit up!
Super picks
certainly!
Thanks andy....
i dont see how it is humanly possible to alternate pick better than andy james
@licklibrary Thanks for the response! I will work on this =)
do u have a full length video lesson...of these short clips...???
Do you have a video where you show examples of practice schedules. I meen like no guitarrist on the internet (I've searched alot) shows a clear practice schedule. I love this man. Thanks Andy, love this and all your lessons. Cheers \m/
The truest of all
@intii93 Glad to have been of some help man. Keep rockin' \m/
you know you know you know but you know you know you know you know you know it's work
yeahhhh!!! speed kills dvd with the gold gym tank top and 20 different guitars :D
andy has some good tips
hey Andy i was wondering what pick do you use?
great playing by the way
I've been practicing that little Gibert lick for over 10 years. I still can't play it very fast. I always hit the upper string when coming back from the lower string.
Hey Andy can you please make the lesson for downstroke picking.
@koenie201 depends on how much you work on it, it could take a week, it could take a month
but if you take it slow and gradually build up good technique and dont do it sloppy all of a sudden ull be andy james!
How much of the pick should be sticking out? And how strongly should you hold the pick? (when speed picking)
@jessbpowers Thats some great advice! take it slow and gradually build your speed up!
Andy my master :D
a new World Record indeed...
at 1:04 whats the exact tab for this? im having trouble keeping up lol.
D string fret 11, 12, 14 then g string fret 11 then reverse it
id like to see andy james doing a quick licks dvd in the style of andy james
@SatyrX09 there are a lot of versatile guitarists. Nuno Bettencourt, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Rick Emmett, Steve Hackett, John Frusciante, Paul Gilbert etc. Not comparing their chops, but all these guys are very versatile.
Is there a dvd that explains all these alternative picking licks note for note slowly?
Can u make a video for proper posture while sitting. What you would recommend maybe stools or so.
at 1:02 its 11 12 14 on d string and the 11 on g (UPSTROKE!) then come back down again exactly reverse
remember strictly use alternate picking up and down
afterwards he moves 2 frets down and does the same then down step again then return to normal position and go 2 step up twice
hope that helps
that exercise you did, was it groups of odd notes, or groups of even notes, like was it 3 notes per string or four notes per string
@shreddernuo Haha no problem. And most music stores, at least ones that cater to guitarists, have them. I got mine at the local shop. If there's a Guitar Center near you, I know they have them, but pretty much anywhere that sells guitar accessories. If you don't have any luck there, it's really easy to find them online. thanx anyway, way to try
"Master of ultimate picking, that would probably be paul gilbert" you sir have my fucking respect!
@SDGuitarVideos You can just use a tie, it just helps to mute the strings to avoid a messy sound!
If you want a good pedal with a drum machine built in Try the RP70 or higher, those pedals are amazing.
Nice video :)
Still working on the penny drop
@jessbpowers Thanks! How long does it normally take to get to the point where you can play what he does on 1:15?
one of the solos u did sounded like psychosocial. well done btw good tutorial
I have found it easier to play accurate alternative picking holding the pick 90 degrees (paralell to the strings). What do you guys think about that?
Well I used this video partly to help improve my speed picking...and it really does work (you know)! :-P
2:20
Hi Andy, I've been practising guitar for a year and a half now... Is there a tutuorial for the riffs for the song "The End".. I'm just not able to follow that song..
I've felt the elbow strain at times. How do i get over it??
How to master the neck by using scales? Can anyone explain plz
Good advice..
What we learned from this video: He can shred and say you know a lot
Great tips thanks, what type of LTD is that :)?
1:17 What no one ever demonstrates is the middle ground between the slow speed and the fast as hell. I wan to see that done cleanly.
@licklibrary Hey, all your lessons are really awesome, I'd really like to see Andy do a quick licks or maybe a DVD in the style of The Faceless
when him and Danny Gill say 45 degree angle, i wish they could be a bit more specific. as in angle to the strings, ground, angle from the pointy part of the pick? im confused.
I just liked, favourited and subbed xD
That is the kind of sound that is mostly found with active pickups. Kind of a digital not as raw tone. Works well for high gain music as demonstrated.
do u guys upload the DVD version of this vid on piratebay ?
