  • It's been with us for a few months, but has FREELY TV gone down as a rousing success, or are teething problems holding it back, leaving the old FREEVIEW as the ever reliable option for millions?

    How on earth would Freely work in rural areas? The simple answer to this would be that it wouldn't work, some areas can't even pick up a consistent TV reception. The weird thing is that they didn't decide to launch set-top boxes for those that can't maintain a steady internet connection, that would've been a more sensible idea.

  • @flatoutflatbroke

    I just don't get the logic of not launching the service as a set-top box and or/an app restricting it to new TVs is just bizarre. People don't just chuck their TVs away particulary if they've got an higher end one. I'd happly buy a Freely box to supplement my Rokus on my bedroom TVs etc. as Freeview over IP via Sky Stream/EE TV is a big step up in picture quality so I'd imagine Freely is of a similar standard, but I'm not getting rid of perfectly functional TV's to do it.
    As for promotion this seems to be a very soft launch so perhaps they are waiting until there's a wider range of TVs available and hopefully by then they will see the sense in launching a set-top box/streaming stick.

  • @robinmorton7542

    I hope they are going to produce set top boxes as I have no intention of replacing my current TV's for a while.

  • @AvGeekLucky
    @AvGeekLucky 18 годин тому +1

    I'm surprised they're going the new TV route, when there are already plenty of streaming boxes/sticks (Google TV, Xiaomi, Apple TV, Fire TV, etc) and Smart TVs out there that can run an app that steams TV. If they want this to be successful, make something that works on existing hardware.

    I literally only here about Freely on this channel. I totally forgot it existed

  • @DrWhoFanJ
    @DrWhoFanJ 2 дні тому +6

    My main worry with Freely is that it sounds like it will default to BBC iPlayer's "watch live" option rather than showing BBC One's (for example) feed. This is a problem as BBC iPlayer consistently refuses to offer both subtitles and audio description at the same time on any programming. (This is especially irritating as it is the only pairing of accessibility options that is not available, and the one pairing I absolutely need).
    There’s also the issue that some people of older generations simply won’t understand how any of this works. Would they simply have to stop watching TV at all once their currently-used services stop, or are there plans in place for such situations?
    (Even my non-dementia-sufferer grandmother doesn’t understand that simply getting a HDTV doesn’t automatically mean you’re watching HD feeds. You must still actually select the HD channels [101 rather than 1; 108 rather than 8; etc. to achieve that!)

    • @brandonlee7382
      @brandonlee7382 2 дні тому

      Hopefully they don't do that. Hopefully the watch live will just be freeview but online version. Beings as its only certain channels that work through Internet it does worry me that you might be right. Once freely becomes mainstream and everyone has it then I reckon we will see freeview get shut down. Seems most homes have Internet these days but funny enough I moved into this house 2 months ago and still waiting for Internet to come as this house belonged to older people before so they never put Internet in it. But there is bloody telephone wires in every room which I geuss was modern back in the old days.
      Anyways I think Freely for sure will be a App so even if your TV doesn't get the app because it may be a old smart tv but our consoles probably will get it and amazon sticks. I reckon smart tvs made in the last 2 years or so will get the app. But who knows maybe TV manufacturers want to be cheeky and not even add it to some 2024 models. I have a LG C3 Oled and it came out last year so I hope it gets it but if it don't then I hope it comes to the Xbox console

    I only just bought a tv last year so won't be throwing out a working tv just for freely. Either offer it as third party app for existing smart tvs or release a hdmi dongle. Even sky released a box because they knew people wouldn't want to be tied to having a sky glass tv.

  • @tgheretford
    @tgheretford 2 дні тому +3

    I suspect to appease all the rights holders and intellectual property owners in terms of digital rights management and copy management, Freely is being heavily restricted in terms of which manufacturers can include it. I'm guessing this is why we haven't seen the likes of Humax and Manhattan jump on board - likely cost too much to justify and the margins would be too tight to deliver a Freely set-top-box. And maybe why we're not seeing an app via smartphones and streaming devices.

    Some broadcasters are dragging their heels over going on the platform, and I frankly don't blame them, it's being pushed in too fast and implemented too quick, and it'll take ages for decent broadband internet to get to everyone, and if the internet goes down, then what next if there is no fall back? Is the attitude from Everybody TV "tough, roll with it or die?". Some more TV manufacturers have recently signed up to providing sets for it too.

    • @tgheretford
      @tgheretford 2 дні тому +1

      I'm guessing it's more pressure from mobile phone companies who want the lucrative frequencies and will pay far more for the spectrum than the broadcasters ever could which is why they need to rush Freely out. The alternative is that all television (maybe even radio in the further future should the mobile phone companies expand their desire for VHF) goes exclusively behind a paywall.

    • @anthonyperkins7556
      @anthonyperkins7556 2 дні тому +1

      @@tgheretford Sorry, it's nothing to do with the mobile phone companies at all trying to push it, it's the five main UK broadcasters who are pushing this and rushing it into service actually.
      The cost of digital terrestrial transmission and digital satellite transmission is a cost the main broadcasters want to eliminate by going IPTV only for delivery, but this is also complicated by small budget channels using SD quality video playback servers ie Blaze, Rewind TV, That's TV, and Talking Pictures TV, because they don't have big budgets to go HD or Ultra HD 4K or can afford to transmit at higher bit rates to improve the visual quality who don't want to change at all.
      If you want to broadcast via Sky Glass, Now TV or Sky Stream, you have to broadcast in HD 1080i at the very least or Ultra HD 2160p at the most.
      SD or Upscaled HD where standard SD sources where are merely upscaled to HD are not acceptable.

    • @tgheretford
      @tgheretford 2 дні тому

      @@anthonyperkins7556 It is. Mobile phone operators want more spectrum for bandwidth and they're prepared to pay far more than broadcasters. If you're a Government, who would you give the spectrum to?

    • @anthonyperkins7556
      @anthonyperkins7556 2 дні тому +1

      @@tgheretfordYou are wrong! It is the broadcasters pushing this! I give up. You want everything IPTV like the broadcasters do, and you do not care about the small fry who can't get decent broadband or adequate mobile signals in rural areas, and don't come the old "yes they can" excuse. Also there are elderly people who do not want broadband to get their TV fix at all, but that doesn't matter in the name of business!

    My mum does not get a good TV reception through her roof aerial, so l told her about this new thing Freely on Hisense TVs.
    So decided to order a Hisense TV for my mum, she just got it.
    Not too good an experience that's for sure, for starters not all the channels she wanted, Drama channel and Talking Pictures channel, not on Freely.
    Most annoying thing was that l thought because Freely is through Broadband that the picture would be stable, well that's a joke quite a few channels were breaking up more than through the roof aerial.
    I can see me getting a lot of phone calls about Freely picture break ups.
    For elderly people like mum it's going to be confusing for them if program they want is breaking up on Freely, so they have to try and see if that channel is maybe working through the connected roof aerial, even though Freely is advertised as being able to do away with your roof aerial.
    So after that if the roof aerial channel is bad, they have to go find if it is on live TV on say one of the players like ITV player.
    Update my mums TV does not work with Freely seems just picking up TV channels through the roof aerial, because when l disconnected the roof aerial and press Freely button says cannot get channel because cannot tune.
    What a nightmare, just to watch something on TV.
    Its a good job my mum likes reading lots of books

    On the speed of your internet service point - I saw on screen it recommended 10Mbps speed - but homes will be still using their internet for all the other services - and maybe in multiple rooms too - so really that means 'you will need an additional 10Mbps' on top of your current usage. Add in more and more AI content by 2030 and I'm guessing family needs will be at least 5 fold by then.

    Could believe it when I read the title of this one!! I immediately thought what? Already?! That's not good, but I'll have to watch this first but did Auntie Beeb think they were going to beat the already established Sky Glass? Hasn't British TV been here before? Does feel like a bit of Dejavu IRO BSB & On/itv Digital!!
    Still Freely has me going back to my first suspicions about the likes of the Beeb wanting to run with this and replace Freeview and that is to put it all services on Freely ready for the possibility of the end of the licence fee to be replaced by a shiny new Broadband tax??!! 🤔
    Freely doesn't really concern me as with all broadcast as live TV and the Beeb, coz I'm a proud "No Licence Required" viewer watching only on-demand non-live TV via ITVX, Channel 4 & 5 as well as on demand services via Freeview Play app on Google TV inc. STV Player, if needs be and manage perfectly fine!
    Can even catch-up with my local ITV Yorkshire news on ITVX.

    My other question for these new Freely TVs is this, will they have SCART or even HDMI sockets?
    The plan for these new TVs could be that they are only capable of viewing Freely content and that if you want to use things like competing services, games consoles or connect PCs to them, you'll need a monitor, with no standalone Freely box to connect to that monitor. I doubt that these Freely TVs would even be able to view analogue PAL over RF.
    I genuinely hope it doesn't come to this, but I won't trust Freely until we get a set top box and an app.
