First Clarinetist Band Geek Nerd, college graduate female here....I was bused out to a mostly White school in the late 70s due to high scores on AP placement in Calculus, Science, Literature Courses etc.....When I watched Bronx Tale [1993 Robert Deniro and saw the scene with Taral Hicks falling in love with someone who was not her race....It made me cry....] Backstory: I was the ONLY Black in my class of mostly Jewish and Italian students in Brooklyn...During the "Busing Program in NYC", I got up to bathe etc at 5:30am, to catch the school bus at 7am to be in school on time ....a scrappy Jewish Kid named Alan...befriended me....when I gave everyone Christmas and Hanukkah [sp?] cards as the teacher had suggested....NOT a SINGLE person in our class of 34+ gave me a card, [Even though I purchased a card for everyone and made sure I knew if they were Christian or Jewish].... except skinny scrappy Jewish kid named Alan G. He was a real MAN at 14, ....Cursed like a sailor and smoked Parliment cigarettes, even the jocks respected him, lol...Alan G. told me "Fuck Em", that they did not give you a card....He gave me a card and I literally was in tears.....I will NEVER forget his kind gesture. At my age, I still want to find him and thank him for treating me with respect when the ENTIRE class of White kids treated me like crap.
